What does a middle class Christmas look like?!

Just wondering if the cost of living is changing things ... I'm not mc but live in London. My most mc friends spend xmas in London up to xmas eve & head to Norfolk for xmas day & the following days. Then head off skiing to France the day before new year's.. Their run up to xmas with the kids is super busy too filled with carol services, Christmas events & art workshops. It looks idyllic.

Surrey, not Norfolk - but this is my life pretty much spot on 😂

We are already booked on the Original Sound of Music Tour. Beyond excited, though our DDs are refusing to wear play clothes [sulks]

So excited for you! Enjoy x

Definitely no ski-ing, but I usually visit family up north or family abroad.

Doing our first Christmas in London in ages, but then Mexico, its too bloody cold!

Lol, you are talking about upper MC really. Most MC people I know just stay at home and are found to be bored and freezing in the park trying to entertain the kids from 26th Dec through to the day the schools go back

yeah, this.

Dittosaw · 09/12/2022 15:26

There are so many really exciting free and low cost things to do over Christmas that regardless of budget and unless you are very rural (in which case you probably have rural type activity) anyone can go to a varieties of days out, carol services, parties and Christmas Markets. It’s one of the radon’s I love the UK.

😂😂😂😂

What, all 8 million?

Oh I a,ways forget my posts aren’t seen through my eyes. I meant in terms of middle class London as opposed to the middle class other major cities.
It’s just in my neck of the woods we have a lot, ( and genuinely every new person) is down to the country for Christmas from London. It’s the norm rather than incredibly privileged.

Rural poverty is worse than big city poverty in so many ways. There is literally no way to access to energy or food if the one bus doesn’t show a day or the 6 mile walk with no pavements is too much.

Oh I see - so it's the very very few who you actually see, which is understandable - so a large proportion of the second home owners in your area. But they are a tiny of even middle class London - it's extremely far from the norm even in my pretty wealthy part of SW London.

Petitepenguin · 13/12/2022 19:43

Middle class London types put their trees up very late & don't go full hog. Chrimbo in the country is where the real festivities are. However they do lots of naice activities with the dc in the lead up..

I believe the trick is to buy the tree out of the florist’s shop window at about 4pm on Christmas Eve before decamping to the Cotswolds for the week.

I want to be your friend! You sound like great fun 😁

TribeD · 13/12/2022 22:06

I've no idea what class I am...

I've got tasteful, elegant decorations in the lounge, the kitchen is kitsch, the bathroom is [admittedly] bonkers but I am making my own pastry for homemade mince pies to go with homemade sloe gin.

We have matching pyjamas, the dog has a stocking of treats and DD has a tree in her room.

We will definitely be going for a Boxing Day walk, ice skating, panto and singing carols and I made my own wreath.

Can I create a new class? It'll be for those of us who haven't a clue, and aren't bothered, but just want to bob along nicely.

Petitepenguin · 13/12/2022 22:46

@TribeD you would fit in with my London mates!

We are very bloody middle class this year. We’ve just realised today we’ve lost half the bloody baubles so it’s all bloody tasteful sparse and silver. We only have the silver baubles.

Norfolk after Christmas is very much a posh London thing to do. I've been before for NY with friends who are posher than me.

Again, I reckon people have not seen my PILs' tiny semi-detached bungalow.

Loving that us heading to Norfolk after Boxing Day might mark us out as 'posh' in people's eyes, though. I'd no idea that I was being a posh wanker!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 14/12/2022 14:08

Going to Norfolk to spend some time in your holiday home, a charming period property - posh

Going to Norfolk to stay with your relatives - normal (unless relatives live in stately pile)

GoslingsWindowCleaner · 14/12/2022 14:35

Haha that doesn't sound posh @JassyRadlett - I think you get a pass!

obviously some Londoners actually grew up in Norfolk but for most that's not the case. When they say they're going to Norfolk for the New Year, they mean a holiday home or, in our case, an Air BNB. My friends are lovely poshos (not wankers!) I should say. They often go to Norfolk for the post Christmas period and are aware it's a 'wanky London' cliched thing to do!

LexMitior · 14/12/2022 14:48

This thread is all absolutely cringe worthy and far too braggy. Either people have recently acquired this status because letting people know is so naff it's unbelievable.

It's always women too - I have never seen a man who "just has too let you know". God how try hard.

Sad beige Christmas for sad beige people

The idea of buying a beautifully decorated tree right at the last minute seems really appealing.

DosCervezas · 14/12/2022 14:57

Is your friend Hugh Grant? That all l sounds like something from a Richard Curtis film.

I’m glad Londoners choose Norfolk. It leaves lots of beautiful counties to the rest of us.

Cuppa2sugars · 14/12/2022 15:02

i’m mc with job, upbringing, parents careers, where i was brought up, schooling etc.

My Christmas these days consists of spending xmas with close family at mine or their house, its very restrained in every aspect. spending New year in my holiday home with friends, i used to ski when i lived in Switzerland, but too old to be bothered now.

Can we not tar all Londoners with the same brush?

I love london at Christmas as loads of the wanky ones piss off to where they are actually from. I'm a Londoner so home is here.
