Petty things that annoy you on Mumsnet.

What little things on MN annoy you more than they should?

People responding to others on a thread but not quoting them so I have to scroll back pages and hunt for the comment that they were responding to.

People referring to 3 and 4 year olds as toddlers.

If someone's posts annoy me and their name involves something that I love, then that bothers me even more.

The one poster who always responds to a "What's your favourite episode of a show? or What's your favourite dish from the Chinese takeaway?or similar threads by informing us how much they hate takeaways or wouldn't watch said show if they had a gun held to their head.

The phrase "Give your head a wobble." It's utterly infuriating.

"I wish people would just stick to proper scientific terms and call it a 'bubba cuddle' Grin (that's probably actually the official terminology on NetHuns!)"

'bubba cuddle'

😂

While I'm here, I'll add "literally" and "he's definitely [insert one from the following: cheating/gay/a bigamist]".

"gaslighting". Most overused word of 2022.

Brit posters saying ‘pissed’ to mean very annoyed.

It’s allowed from any American of course, but Brits really ought to know that it’s pissed OFF here - just ‘pissed’ in the U.K. means drunk.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/12/2022 12:04

Also, Brits using the term 'paycheck'. They don't even spell it 'paycheque' - not that that's been a thing in the UK at least for decades now.

Posters based in the UK will avoid giving unhelpful UK-specific advice to somebody 'living from paycheck to paycheck', as it clearly won't apply to their circumstances in the US; but then you later find out that they are in the UK after all.

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 10/12/2022 12:41

The very peculiar use of the word "join"

"Friends are having a weekend away in a lovely cottage and have asked me if I want to join"

"MIL is having a tea party but I am working so I said I would join later"

Join what?

Join in maybe, or join them, but not just "join"

I'm sure there is a proper grammatical term to describe why it is wrong, but grammatical terms were never my strong point!

And now I am annoyed with myself as the word "join" looks very odd typed out so many times 🙄

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 10/12/2022 12:51

“Wow good drip feed OP”

Unless you put your entire life story into a post - which no one would read - anything can be considered a drip feed

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 10/12/2022 13:04

Outlandish and weird claims about a poster based on a few words they’ve posted.

On an I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here thread recently I said Matt a Hancock was good at trials, and I got called a Tory 😂😂

I TOTALLY agree. Well said!

HeatwaveToNightshade · 11/12/2022 08:26

Maybe it's been mentioned, but the one post wonders annoy me. The ones who start a thread and get loads of replies and never come back. I realise there could, in some cases, be a valid reason for this, but not every single time. There's no obligation to come back, but then it just looks like they were bored and made stuff up or that they have no manners.

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 11/12/2022 08:50

@HeatwaveToNightshade

Absolutely agree!

When you can see that there are hundreds of replies but the OP hasn't come back to the thread (only "see all" and not "see next" showing on the OP) then I rarely bother reading them.

midsomermurderess · 11/12/2022 09:01

The increasing use of bullet points and numbered lists. I just jump over those posts. I just get a sense of prissy self-importance. And it’s lime reading the minutes of dull work meetings. Also the passive aggressive ‘are you getting help with your anxiety….’ posts. Oh, and this ‘🙄’.

NiLunNiLautre · 11/12/2022 10:33

The misery fests. Competitive misery or just plain ‘everything is awful, woe is me!’ Hundreds of posters piling on to say “Me too, my life is also awful!”

thewinterwitch · 11/12/2022 13:12

I just hate the kisses at the end of posts. x

Well, THAT'S coming from your position of great privilege.

Well, yes, exactly! Grin
If I ever said anything on such a thread I'd be accused of having an easy life. I really don't, but would sooner cheer myself up with a 70s nostalgia/ most embarrassing experience thread than wallow, moan and declare that the world is shit and we're all doomed!

PhillySub · 11/12/2022 14:08

"Didn't want to read and run" 😤🤢

PattyDuke · 11/12/2022 14:39

Hello Ladies ....

Wishimaywishimight · 08/12/2022 11:48

""No" is a complete sentence." Stop saying that. It's not. It's just a word.

in most real world conversations if someone requests something of you and your response is "no" there will generally be an expectation of some further dialogue, otherwise you just stand there looking at each other.

Boss: " will we meet tomorrow's deadline?"

Me: "No"

Boss: ""Um, can you elaborate?"

Me: "No"

Oh that made me laugh a lot
So True though
😂😂

Daleksatemyshed · 11/12/2022 18:24

This is petty but I hate the word support on every other thread as in "do you have any support". Quite often people need someone to help them out but it's as if saying help is now not acceptable. Are people's egos really so fragile that help has become a dirty word?

ME TOO! It’s never help, always ‘support’. And don’t even get me started on ‘support network’.

Daleksatemyshed · 11/12/2022 18:49

Thank you @Cuppasoupmonster , I thought it was just me. I have this problem with saying what I mean, not offensively , but just straight talking 🤣

Cuppasoupmonster · 11/12/2022 18:51

Definitely not just you. ‘Support’ is something people need if they’re recently bereaved or similar. Not just with perfectly routine obstacles in life. The language on here is always so extreme!

Daleksatemyshed · 11/12/2022 18:58

@Cuppasoupmonster I think it's some people need to always be seen to be Woke. I don't worry about that, if you're kind that's enough

ParanoidGynodroid · 12/12/2022 10:16

You sound very young, OP

You sound very young, OP

Always feel like responding "yep, I've got decades of life left for living to the max, sucks to be you" ... but then realise that would be both childish, and untrue (at 58...)

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/12/2022 12:29

"Didn't want to read and run"

Yes, why do people do that? Do they genuinely think that the OP will know how many people have read their thread and be able to contrast that with the number of responses they receive?

If anything, it might even be worse - when you see that you've received a reply, hoping for some useful advice or shared experience and then it's just a 'didn't want to read and run'. It's like those Amazon questions where five people have responded and you excitedly look to see what important helpful info they've provided to help you decide if it's the right product for you.... and they're all just "I don't know".
