Continuation of previous thread.

Gather here all ye refugees from the foundering ship of JTT, if ye be in need of "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

Or just to chat randomly.

I was meant to be out doing jet washing for someone today, but it'll have to wait. It would be an ice rink if done today.

I had a terrifying dream recently, one of those where you’re sort of semi-conscious. I’d left a window ajar and somehow a hoard of British shorthairs managed to get in. I tried to escape but everywhere I turned, a big blue chonk got up in my face. I’m not sure why this was so scary exactly but I woke up in a cold sweat and had to do a circuit of the flat to check for trespassing cats, at which point of course K emerged from the shadows and frightened me half to death.

It can be quite disconcerting walking in on him sometimes

I know there’s nothing more boring than hearing about other people’s dreams, but last night I dreamt that I killed 3 neighbours over the course of a few days, and woke up worried about the light switch I’d left my fingerprints on. Can’t now remember how I killed them or why, but I got macman to help me cover it up. At one point the owner of the house came back but luckily didn’t notice any of the bodies except for the dead cat that had nothing to do with me.

Well Mavis... I don't normally remember my dreams, except that they are vaguely boring - but last night I dreamed that I was a police officer and one of two instigators and perpetrators of a murder of a TV personality. Two other POs helped us, and one was setting up to blackmail us when I woke up, very upset at what I'd done.

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/12/2022 13:18

Heh, that reminds me of driving my brother somewhere and the dog was in the back of the car. The was a sudden commotion and grunting sounds from the back seat and I asked bro what was going on. 'He's having a wank!' was the answer.

Britinme · 12/12/2022 14:06

I feel like the Queen Mother finally able to look the East End in the face after Buckingham Palace was bombed. -7C (20F) here this morning and we had some snow overnight, but only about a half inch of it and it'll be gone by tonight after the day warms up.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 12/12/2022 15:14

I've been keeping Oscar indoors since the summer because he gets horrible dermatitis, and even though it clears up in winter I decided that with another cat to play with and lots of house to rampage through he was fine.

So today was the day he slipped past the defences. Fortunately it was so cold that he came to a startled halt about four metres from the door, and since by that stage I was on flat (dry, hooray) ground, I was able to pounce on him and carry him back in. He seems content to sit in front of the stove now!

I'm going back and fro to the recycling bin - it froze shut on Saturday, so there was build up of stuff, and tomorrow is recyclables collection day. It has also occurred to me that since it is windless and dry, and next week might be anything but, this is the night to leave the binmens' Christmas card and tip out.

So where are the cards, and where is the string to tie it on with?

SinnerBoy · 12/12/2022 15:33

Freeeedom!!!

Aaarghhh! Fuck that shit...

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 12/12/2022 15:36

Pretty much his actual words.

MavisMcMinty · 12/12/2022 15:38

The living room was just 14C a couple of hours ago, so I lit an early fire and the room temperature has risen 3.5C since then.

MavisMcMinty · 12/12/2022 15:39

…Dunno how fast normal central heating works, but I was quite impressed with the log-burner for that.

Britinme · 12/12/2022 15:46

Our cats are indoor cats (much more common over here than in the UK) and on the odd occasion when they've got out of the door, they tend to freeze to a startled halt and are easily collected. It felt very weird to me to keep them in when all my UK cats went out all the time and we never even had a litter box at home, but at least I don't have to worry about ticks bringing in Lyme disease. We lived for thirteen years backing on to seven acres of common land - woodland and a small river - and there were coyotes and fisher cats in the woods as well as ticks, so I just got used to them being inside.

SinnerBoy · 12/12/2022 15:46

I lit a fire just before 3. The heating was set to 17 before that, but the back bedroom where I'm currently typing doesn't get as warm. The fire warms it, however.

Dotellhimpike · 12/12/2022 15:52

Got an email half an hour ago from the solicitor saying the house sale was ready for completion. I ought to be elated but I feel like I've won a battle but had the shit kicked out of me in the process, it's just been so stressful from start up until now. Even typing this my stomach is tightening and cramping. Maybe I'll feel different when I get the keys later this week?

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/12/2022 15:52

We've not long lit the fire and it's now 17.5C in the living room.

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/12/2022 15:53

Pike, that sounds craps, I hope you feel better soon!

Britinme · 12/12/2022 15:57

Sorry to hear it's left you feeling crap Pike - I'm sure it will be fine once you get the keys, and then you'll have all the joy of moving and unpacking.... oh.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 12/12/2022 16:04

Pike, movng house is one of the most stressful things - it would be odd if you weren't feeling gut-punched. I hope you get through it smoothly, and spend
2023 wondering what on earth you were worrying about.

K is an indoor cat because I live on the second floor, and also the road here is very treacherous. His breed isn’t very street-smart either apparently, plus they’ve incredibly lazy. Did you get both your cats at the same time? I’d like to get another one but I’m worried they won’t get on and then I have no idea what I’d do.

@Dotellhimpike it’s completely understandable you feel the way you do. Moving house is supposed to be the most stressful thing after bereavement and divorce. Hopefully once the shock wears off you’ll feel some of that elation.

MavisMcMinty · 12/12/2022 16:08

Moving house is my least favourite thing, so I hope I die here in my garden, sunbathing in the summer (not next summer or any summer in the near future thank-you-please) and nobody noticing until dark.

Britinme · 12/12/2022 16:11

@CyanCyan - yes, both of ours came to us as littermates, tabby sisters, but they hate each other anyway. We still had one of our old cats (brought with me from the UK) when we got them as kittens, and she basically ignored them.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 12/12/2022 16:17

My experiences of getting a second cat

  1. 1982 Emily Grey took one look at the dear little kitten (Penelope) and climbed the highest tree she could find (160 year-old sycamore, v v big) and stayed up it for a FULL WEEK. Eventually came down, made friends with the beastly interloper, would curl up to sleep with her.

  2. 2015 Oscar was feral in the garden for months and would sniff and be sniffed by dear old Hector through the window screen, so when I eventually trapped him and brought him indoors (after a detour to the vet) he settled in quickly. They would curl up and sleep together.

  3. 2019 Shockingly, after that, when I was sad that Oscar was left as a lone cat and accepted the offer of a dear little kitten (Roisin Dubh), he sulked for days, growled at the ickle, and BIT me really hard. Then he shrugged and got on with it, they curl up and sleep together, and play and interact in a friendly way.

Rosy has always been an indoor cat - she seems happy and I don't have to worry about traffic.

Bottom line, cats usually make friends once they know they aren't going to be neglected.

Dunno how mine will react if/when I get a dog.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 12/12/2022 16:19

I have no idea how I messed up the formatting. Soz.

MavisMcMinty · 12/12/2022 16:27

Poor old Cupboard Kitty - if anyone here remembers her - was so put out by us getting another kitten and a year later a puppy, that she moved into the larder and spent the last decade of her life living in there. Whereas the mighty Bean was about a year older than the puppy and totally bossed her, making her get out of her own bed if he wanted to lie in it, and making her wash him if he came in wet from the rain.

Depends on the nature of the cat and dog, bottom line. My friend’s elderly Burmese cat flew at their new puppy with murderous intent whenever they met, they had to keep them in separate parts of the house until the cat died.
