A Greek Yogurt Appreciation Thread

Just finished an indulgent bowl tonight with choc chips, sweetened dried cranberries, almond butter, cinnamon and clementine segments and was thinking what an amazing food it is.

Lunchtime sometime this week, I will likely have garlic and herb Lubneh with crackers/pitta breads/ bagels.

I add it to homemade guacamole for protein (we are veggie household)

Makes lovely pasta salad dressing when mixed with mayo or hot when mixed with Marmite, mushrooms and onions and herbs.

Plain with a sprinkle of oats and hot stewed apples and honey in winter.

Berries in summer.

Great budget versions.

How does everyone else eat theirs?

@saraclara it never occurred to me to add lemon curd, I can’t wait for breakfast, thank you 😊

808Kate1 · 06/12/2022 22:34

Highly recommend it whatever your fruit, nuts and seeds choice is, but also a wee dod of Nestle Carnation caramel drizzle to top it off.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 06/12/2022 22:34

Sainsburys full fat fancy Greek yoghurt is amazing, so creamy and delicious. I like it with pecans and honey stirred through

Usually have plain with blueberries and strawberries, but my favourite addition is stewed rhubarb 😋

OlleOskiFelle · 06/12/2022 22:38

I just eat it plain, but it must be full fat.
I once tried the fat free when it was all they had left and it was horrible, the texture of melted pritt stick and a really odd flavour.
I feel the same way about cottage cheese.
Just give me the fat FFS!

Breakfast Ice Cream. Top Genius.

Bagzzz · 06/12/2022 22:42

I’ve never had Greek yogurt. I’ve just looked up the differences online - Greek being thicker consistency, a bit sourer and higher protein.

I usually have sweet yogurts mostly fat free/low fat. Can anyone recommend one for me to try ideally small individual pot so if I don’t like it it isn’t wasted (live alone so no one else to share).
Thanks

You need the strained Greek yoghurt, not 'Greek style'. The strained type comes in wider 'dumpier' tubs, the greek style in tall ones.

IMO the Fage 5% is the best of all I've tried- when I have been to Greece everywhere served it- often have it for breakfast with Choc and nut granola for a bit of sweetness with strawberries/blueberries/raspberries on top. Comes in individual pots so if you don't like it you are not stuck with massive tub (although once you have tried it you will convert to the massive tubs! Xmas Grin)

Lolly86 · 06/12/2022 22:54

Daily with museli and honey....🥰

crackofdoom · 06/12/2022 22:55

Tahini, walnuts and honey.
Or tahini, muesli and mixed berries
Or just tahini, if I'm low carbing.

WineNoMore20 · 06/12/2022 22:58

Butter baked peaches and stem ginger this morning. It was heaven

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 06/12/2022 23:00

I love Greek yoghurt with mixed berries, a sprinkle of cinnamon and some chopped walnuts.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 06/12/2022 23:00

We get through gallons in this house. My current favourite is the Lidl one (always full fat) in the huge striped tubs. Recent favourite recipe is roasted/charred aubergine, with a spoonful of greek yogurt topped with harissa. So much better than it sounds!

Icantremembermyusername · 06/12/2022 23:09

Thanks so much for starting this thread! I now have a tub of stewed apples and frozen raspberries defrosting. To be mixed with some greek yoghurt and topped with Dorset muesli. I've been struggling with breakfast recently and if I run out of time I can pop a lid on it and eat it later #small wins

Thanks @saraclara just Googling and see Fage coming up and that they have strawberry. If i can’t get that I love honey.

What a fab fab thread - thank you @PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog

I've only recently discovered Greek Yogourt and LOVE IT .. before I was worried about calories etc... no idea it was SO delicious and so packed with protein.

My two sweet favourites so far are:

  1. Just with some pomegranate seeds and pistachio nuts sprinkled on top, then a drizzle of honey ... my fav.. been eating it almost every day for last 3 weeks!!! Happily give to friends or family as a pud
  2. With stewed apple and toasted pecans and a dash of maple syrup

Looking forward to trying the savoury suggestions - especially with aubergine!

wavecat · 06/12/2022 23:40

Any supermarket, I eat too much to have Fage everyday. Teaspoon of lemon curd, grating of lemon rind if there is time.

Whoevereatsgrass · 06/12/2022 23:55

Ah my favourite breakfast … Fage 5% with frozen mango, frozen raspberries, a teeny drizzle of honey and a handful of toasted oats on top. Pure heaven and keeps me going all morning. It’s got so expensive though … £5 for a large tub in Tesco tonight.

Tezza1 · 07/12/2022 05:49

I have recently discovered Icelandic skyr which is a thick, low sugar, high protein yoghurt. Absolutely delicious. I just had it with mango chunks.

I only tried it because it had the highest calcium content I could find, but now I have it for preference.

ThePoshUns · 07/12/2022 07:59

Sorry but Greek Style is not Greek Yogurt.
Not a patch on the authentic Greek yogurt like Fage or the supermarket own brands. You need to seek out the shirt wide tubs in the yogurt aisles

I would agree… except for Tim’s.

The Fage Total 0% is delicious, creamy and very moreish …..

Urgh, you heathen! Low fat yoghurt is foul

The full fat version is the food of the the gods though 😋

LizzieSiddal · 07/12/2022 08:13

I have it every morning with a seed mix (I sound like I’m feeding a budgie😂) a spoonful of mixed nuts, a chopped banana and any other fruit in the fridge.

It sets me up for the whole morning.
