Pirates - appropriate for kids?

My nephew wants a pirate party - am I alone in thinking this is inappropriate? I know that might sound silly but pirates weren't very nice and modern day piracy is a thing. I may just be overthinking it though and I'd never say anything to my SIL about it.

My eldest DS absolutely loved Peter Pan disney film as a young child eay before Pirates of the Caribbean. Dressed up as Captain Hook all the time, often went to dress up parties as Captain Hook. Ridiculous to overthink the pirate theme IMO. Its just kids dressing up and being like the Disney pirates etc.

Even more ridiculous to decide you're offended about anything because you've heard that others are without actually truly knowing why you are. Esp mentioning JK Rowling. Perhaps you should read up about that as many people are not offended by what she said.

Overthinking things.

No one is suggesting the kids dress up as Somali pirates with machine guns.

A blow up parrot and a pirate hat is fine!

So is Captain Pugwash off limits now?

I'm in the minority and with you OP. Pirates make me uncomfortable and encouraging it also is weird to me. Especially when my toddler asks what 'walking the plank' means. For now I'll have to change the narrative and make pirates people who just searched for gold and would ward off sea monsters and sharks 🥴.
