How many pigs in blankets pp

CourtneeLuv · 03/12/2022 17:29

I went in the butchers today and started my order for Christmas (still undecided on what meat) I ordered pigs in blankets, specifically two packs of 10, for 2 of us.

These will go on more than one meal obviously!

The correct number of pigs in blankets to serve is infinity but that's unrealistic, so how many are you catering for per person, or is the correct amount per portion?

I've made 24 full size sausage ones for 8 of us. That should be enough. We have a special sausage meat stuffing, turkey and ham too, so not exactly a small amount of meat.

The turkey is already bought and is in the freezer along with the pigs in blankets and the sausage stuffing.

If you were having a normal meal how many rashers of bacon and sausages extra would you eat with it?

Tut.

This is Christmas Dinner we're talking about.

You were kinder than I was going to be

This is the correct answer

Gavel.
The only reason to have Christmas Dinner is for the pigs in blankets

The second part of my life started when I realised I could just have pigs in blankets with cheesy mash for tea on a random Tuesday.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2022 20:59

We're fortunate that it's usually just me and DP, and the packs you buy are intended for 4-6 people, so we don't run out. I think if I was actually feeding 4-6 people, I'd probably get at least two packs.

After all, you need leftovers to fry up with leftover roast potatoes for breakfast the next day, and yes there is such a thing as a leftover roast potato if you cook for 4-6 people when there's only 2 of you on the day.

We also have the Aldi pigs in blanket quiche, which I'm really not sure about, but had to get out of curiosity.

@Marmite27 could you please tell me more about pigs in blankets pasta? I feel a new mid week dinner recipie is about to be added to the household repertoire!

I usually do fusilli with home made pasta sauce and chopped up sausages as a treat for the kids. Once a year they get it with the tiny cocktail sausage size pigs in blankets instead. I’m sure jarred sauce would be fine too, in fact I’m sure my kids would prefer it, but it makes me feel better to make them eat one with vegetables in.

I might even push the boat out and melt cheese on top this year!

Marmite27 · 03/12/2022 21:19

(It’s a tomato sauce)

CoffeeHungry · 03/12/2022 21:23

We are going for the lidl wreath pig in blanket this year between 2 adults and 1 toddler, would probably get a pack of 12 between us if I can't get one nearer the time

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/12/2022 21:26

At least 4 each for Christmas dinner, more for later. I make mine - best quality fat sausages - not chipolatas - cut into thirds, half a rasher of streaky bacon, two on a cocktail stick. Takes v little time, bung in the freezer until the night before.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 03/12/2022 21:26

We're in Ireland and pigs in blankets are a fairly recent import here. My kids adopted them so enthusiastically that we now have a felt pig in a blanket hanging on the christmas tree.

hattie43 · 03/12/2022 21:33

I buy loads as they are such picky bits they often don't make it to the plates . Dogs love them and eat loads aswell . On the plates for dinner prob 3 each but overall probs a kilo or two

TheChosenTwo · 03/12/2022 21:37

I don’t actually like them but we buy 40 chipolatas and enough bacon to wrap them. I don’t know the finer details, dh does all the meat ordering and the cooking, I just know about what is put in the middle of the table on the day 😂
so 40 full size sausage type pigs, this year that equates to 4 pp - I don’t imagine anyone will eat 4 (actually I may have underestimated ds here!) but any leftover will be put out for the evening buffet!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 03/12/2022 21:51

3 on each plate unless you are at a trough - aka A Carvery 🐖

Dontaskdontget · 03/12/2022 22:01

That's genius! I can't believe I didn't think of that before! It's going to blow DH's mind!

pinneddownbytabbies · 23/12/2022 17:33

I'd allow for 2 or 3 per person plus a few more, depending on whether or not your family will descend on them like a plague of locusts.

kimchifix · 23/12/2022 17:40

With Xmas lunch? 3. But obviously I would then shove in another couple each, just in case. As cocktail sausage / canapés with other things probably 5. So yeah, 5! Grin,

DinosApple · 23/12/2022 17:49

96 pigs, 64 blankets. I do them separately in our house.

That's for potentially 9 but probably 5 depending on who comes. They will all be eaten though either way.

user1471538283 · 23/12/2022 18:57

I never eat them but if I'm cooking I make enough large home made ones for 2 each to go with the other meats. I'm surrounded by enthusiastic meat eaters!

C8H10N4O2 · 23/12/2022 19:04

This being MN, surely the answer is one sausage between six with the leftovers being used cold on Boxing day and incorporated into a nutritious soup on Tuesday.

Xmas Grin
thelobsterquadrille · 23/12/2022 19:06

DH is a heathen and doesn't like them, so I've bought myself a pack of six.

Two with Christmas dinner, two as leftovers that evening, two the following day as a fridge snack.

Anonymouslyposting · 23/12/2022 19:33

12 per person. Minimum. I probably eat around 6-8 with Christmas dinner but they are also a crucial part of leftovers. I get the (irrational and unreasonable) rage when at MiL and I only get 2 (particularly at BiL usually gets served a mountain).

SmileWithADimple · 23/12/2022 19:40

I've bought 36 - that's for 7 of us.

toomanysausages · 23/12/2022 19:48

1-2 with a normal roast. 2-4 Christmas dinner.

SD1978 · 23/12/2022 19:51

You're asking the competitive under eaters of Mumsnet about pigs in blankets..........given fishfingers were established as any more than three was sheer gluttony, then the correct answer is probably 2..........personally infinity sounds good, at least 6, and a few 'accidentally' hidden in the kitchen.......
