Things you say 'wrong'

Apparently I speak funny. The latest word that has brought mirth to others is the way I say 'sandwiches'. I say sand-wich. The 'd' is audible. I didn't think it was all that weird but others seem to find it hilarious.

What words do you say in a peculiar way according to others?

OP posts:
ofwarren · 03/12/2022 15:44

I say it the same as you. It is sand wich isn't it??

AnotherCountryMummy · 03/12/2022 15:45

I also say sandwich with an audible D. And proud of it 🥪

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 03/12/2022 15:46

Everything.

I have a Somerset accent and sound like a pirate.

Hidingawaytoday · 03/12/2022 15:49

I hate these threads, I always end up repeating the word over and over to see how I say it vs the OP/other posters then forget how I usually say it. Both sound right to me, I think.

MsInconspicuous · 03/12/2022 15:51

I say San Widge
My irish mum says SanB witch

SpotlessMind88 · 03/12/2022 15:55

I always pronounced Vimto as "vim-two" rather than "vim-toe".
ketchup i always pronounce as "catchup"
i'm sure there's loads more other things

ThatsRoughBuddy · 03/12/2022 15:58

Often

i pronounce the T but have been informed I’m wrong and it’s said 'offen'. I won’t change and you can’t make me!

pigsducksandchickens · 03/12/2022 16:03

Very outing but two words that cause great hilarity at work are 'garage' not garij and our, not arr so it is our (owwer) lunch break not arrr lunch break.

But that is not the original question I suppose, more a 'what do you pronounce correctly that everyone else pronounces incorrectly?'

CruCru · 03/12/2022 16:05

I don’t pronounce Genevieve correctly. Another mum was planning on calling her new baby that and ended up getting cross because I couldn’t hear the difference between how she said it and how I said it.

I say Sam-widge and ham-bag.

PAFMO · 03/12/2022 16:06

ˈsan(d)wɪdʒ
Most dictionaries give this as the transcription of "sandwich" so nothing wrong with pronouncing the /d/, nothing wrong with not pronouncing it.

Likewise, "often"
Two alternatives given in dictionaries:
ɒf(ə)n and ˈɒft(ə)n
So, you're not wrong if you do, and you're not wrong if you don't.

(As a rule of thumb, I find (and these threads often prove) that the people who think they know loads about language and enjoy telling others they're wrong, don't know nearly as much about language as they think. Or, they're so thick they can't possibly imagine that more than one way is right)

2ManyPjs · 03/12/2022 16:06

In the west of Scotland it comes out as "Sangwich"

I can't say crisps properly, it comes out as criss-s, with a weird double s sound.

Also can't say WH Smith, it becomes WH Shmith.

Can you try and explain the crisps thing again.
I don't understand because surely it has the 2, s sounds?

Like crisps basically, but without the P Grin

Sorry, I can't explain it very well- I don't say cris, I say cris-s Confused

I can say crisp perfectly well by the way, and if I concentrate I CAN say crisPs. But in normal conversation, the P is silent like in the swimming pool boom boom

Do you actually speak funny - or do you just have a different accent, or use dialect, from these other people?

Unless you pronounce "fish" as "chips" .... then it's usually accent-related differences rather than "wrong" pronunciations. Different areas of the country (UK) placing emphasis on first or subsequent syllables, dropping or adding random letters in words, English(as first language)-speakers pronouncing "foreign" words wrongly compared to a native speaker (and vice versa), non-UK but English-speakers (e.g. USA / Australian) pronunciations ....

UnicornPug · 03/12/2022 17:08

Dh tells me I say bowling wrong. I say bow-ling and he says it should be bowl-ing. He’s the only one ever to comment on it.

dd and dd say bald wrong. I think it must be generic to where we live as I’ve noticed their friends do too. Drives me potty though. They say bold rhyming with gold.

Bobcatbobby · 03/12/2022 17:14

I was told once that I said Tanzania wrong. Apparently it's Ta - Nan - Zia not Tan - Zania although I'm still not convinced!

I say sanD-wich - the only words I've been told I mispronounce are ale and owl apparently I say them the same way but I genuinely cannot hear that I do it.

PeloFondo · 03/12/2022 17:16

Half, as in half past
I say haf past

UnknownFemale01 · 03/12/2022 17:19

Walkers as in the crisps “wall-kers”. Drives my DP mad. You don’t “wall-k” to the shop, says he 😂

Willowswood · 03/12/2022 17:23

Actually, saying san'd'wich and pronouncing the 'd' is the correct way.

I can't bear people that insert a 'g'

'San-g-wich 😩
