Things you say 'wrong'

Apparently I speak funny. The latest word that has brought mirth to others is the way I say 'sandwiches'. I say sand-wich. The 'd' is audible. I didn't think it was all that weird but others seem to find it hilarious.

What words do you say in a peculiar way according to others?

Sinc she moved up north, my southern bred best mate has started pronouncing the d in sandwich. She also does that thing when she says thirty or forty and seems to put a gap between the thirt and the y. Ditto 13 and 14. Maybe has also become members which we do take the piss out of.

I hate it on MN when everything different is considered regional but it's pretty obvious this actually is!

CharlotteStreet · 03/12/2022 17:26

*mebbe not members!

Dodecaheidyin · 03/12/2022 17:28

I had the piss ripped out of me at school for saying seven. Instead of sivin. Arseholes.

AndStand · 03/12/2022 17:36

I'm never sure how to say February. Which is a shame because my birthday is in February!

I tend to say Feb-you-airy. Am I meant to sound the first "r" or not 🤷‍♀️

notprincehamlet · 03/12/2022 17:38

I have a chipped tooth I can't afford to get fixed so ... pretty much everything

Often

i pronounce the T but have been informed I’m wrong and it’s said 'offen'. I won’t change and you can’t make me!

Oh really? I too pronounce the t.

I have problems with saying a lot of words as I've got problems processing sound and a lot of words don't sound the way they do to everyone else

VeganFromSveden · 03/12/2022 17:40

Apparently I mispronounce roof.
I’m told I say a mashup betrween ruff & roof.
tbh it sounds fine to my ears!
I am conscious tho of mispronouncing jewellery.
I can’t even think how to explain what my brain converts it into.
I prefer to wriggle out of it by saying that “oh I do admire your taste in bracelets and necklaces” as an example….. anything other than the dreaded J word!

I say Febree.

VeganFromSveden · 03/12/2022 17:42

Feb ru ary.
yes I believe both “r”s are pronounced.

YourSpleenIsDamp · 03/12/2022 17:44

My mum says brocco-lie - she won't be told 😂

FavouriteDogMug · 03/12/2022 17:47

I was told once that I said Tanzania wrong. Apparently it's Ta - Nan - Zia not Tan - Zania although I'm still not convinced

Hadn't thought of this but it does look like Tan Zania.

FavouriteDogMug · 03/12/2022 17:49

For a joke we always say Crud ites. Like Luddites.

AlwaysLatte · 03/12/2022 17:51

We say sand witch with the 'd' too, I think that's pretty normal. Probably a regional thing (we're in the south east).
I do still say Ogligarch, even though I recently found out it's incorrect!

mamabear715 · 03/12/2022 17:51

@TrentCrimm I do the same with crissss.. ;-) Just can't get that 'p' in there! ;-)

Oddly enough I was only thinking yesterday about how older female relatives would pronouce plaster, ie a sticking plaster. They lived here in the north so it should have been plass-ter but was always a southern plarster?
The same with mortgage - they always sounded the 't'. ?

Whichwhatnow · 03/12/2022 17:51

I'm not sure either are wrong, but I pronounce issue as ishoo. I work with a lot of terribly posh people who all pronounce it as is-syoo.

I've tried to use their pronunciation but it just sounds wrong!

Dogsinthecradle · 03/12/2022 18:01

I have a broad Yorkshire accent so I seem to miss out my ‘H’s so ‘orrid enry’ instead of ‘horrid Henry’ or ‘igh eels’ instead of ‘high heels’
my dp can’t tell of I’m saying ‘hair bobble’ or ‘air bubble’
he says Barth but I say bath
He’s from Kent

CoorieIn · 03/12/2022 18:03

Sandwich which I've always pronounced as sam-widge, after 34 years I'll stick with it

MsInconspicuous · 03/12/2022 18:49

Same, but it's my daughter that's born in February. I just stick to saying Feb to save any embarrassment 🤣

MumofSpud · 03/12/2022 18:56

I say De-Zem-ber

Cue hysterical laughing

Oooo I sound the 't' too. I think that's what I do in general. I sound out all the letters most of the time. Most people apparently don't

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 03/12/2022 21:16

I say san-widge. DH always says SAM-widge.

We are west yorks so don't know if it's just a regional thing.

stuntbubbles · 03/12/2022 21:20

Unasseppabull.

You're right in that that's how it's said here. But in South Africa for instance, it's Tan-zah-nia.

Berlinlover · 03/12/2022 21:34

I’m Irish and pronounce the word film - filum.
