I have been trying harder since the pandemic to wear everything I own to death before I get new.

My two - oldest bra is as old as my eldest child (19) I have a nightshirt that's not that much younger. The more tatty they get the more comfy they are. The shame!

Dubarry Galway boots. I've just had them cleaned and re-laced and they look fantastic. I've had them years and think they'll outlive me

TwoBlondes · 02/12/2022 19:13

DD wears a coat I bought 30 years ago pretty much every day. I still love a brown suede jacket from TK Maxx around 20 years ago.

ivykaty44 · 02/12/2022 19:13

I have a fleece blue top from lands end which I wear every winter regularly, I purchased it in 2010, in fact I have two but don’t wear the other so much.

I have a black jumper I purchased 19 years ago but rarely wear.

I have an evening top that my mum gave me that she purchased in 1962/3 and I’ve worn at Xmas etc for parties.

pattihews · 02/12/2022 20:01

In the mid 90s I bought a linen popover shirt from M&S and the cut and length really suited me, so I bought two more. I've worn them every summer since and every time I wear them people have asked me where I got them from. They are just, after 25+ years, starting to go at the shoulder seams and it won't be long till they become gardening clothing and I'll miss them terribly.

With my first pay check from my first proper job in 1982 I bought a set of sunshine yellow towels from John Lewis. I still have them and they're still in regular rotation when we haven't got guests. For years I was a bit ashamed of not following towel fashion and now I'm proud.

I bought my raincoat when I was pregnant with my daughter, she is now 52 years old.

minticecreamisjustok · 02/12/2022 20:19

Don't think I have any clothes older than 5 years, but I have a salon selectives comb that has survived from 30 years ago.

PiddleOfPuppies · 02/12/2022 20:22

I am wearing my mum's "best" wool coat that she bought in Dickens and Jones in the late 1980s. She's passed it on after she lost weight a few years ago - it's genuinely timeless and incredibly warm!

Timeforachangeisitnot · 02/12/2022 20:28

I have several beautiful hand knitted sweaters which my late mum knitted for me in the 1980s.
My favourite, green mohair , is at least 35 years old. I have a picture of DH and I at a New Years party , pre-marriage, and I am wearing it.
It is saved for special occasions now, but I will never willingly part with it.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 02/12/2022 20:30

Sorry, you did say every day clothing. My oldest is probably black trousers I bout in 2010. I lost 3 stone and was so proud of them They still fit 😁

33goingon64 · 02/12/2022 20:34

Checked shirt my Mum bought for me from M&S when it was still St Michael i.e. early/mid 90s. Love it. Pure cotton, wear it every winter under jumpers & looks like new.

megletthesecond · 02/12/2022 20:35

H&M trench from 2000, comes out every spring and autumn. The cuffs have frayed a little but otherwise it's still in good nick.

Supersimkin2 · 02/12/2022 20:37

I’ve still got a silk rose brooch from
John Galliano’s first collection in 1990. His studio was above the garage that sold us fags.

The samples I bought there are now on the backs of godchildren but one day I’ll send them back to that South London boy.

AnneElliott · 02/12/2022 20:38

I have a black coat that I wear for funerals. DH bought or for me from Dorothy Perkins in 1996.

FloresApparuerunt · 02/12/2022 20:39

A dark blue long cardigan from Topshop, circa 2009. I'd just started my MA and it made me feel SO COOL.

It's got a couple of holes in the cuff of the right sleeve, but otherwise, it's survived amazingly well.

Cherryblossoms85 · 02/12/2022 20:39

I have a full length floral Laura Ashley dress from 1995. I am pretty sure size 10s are bigger now as it didn't used to be so snug.

Widmerpool · 02/12/2022 20:49

I still regularly wear a winter coat that my mum bought me when I was 18, 30 years ago.

DelphiniumBlue · 02/12/2022 20:52

A couple of oversize silk shirts that I bought before I met DH - we've been married for 32 years. Legwarmers from about 1980.

WallopBang · 02/12/2022 20:55

This is such a great thread!

My 8yr old doesn't appreciate how proud I am when I tell her I'm wearing clothes that are older than her!

Amazing to read how long clothes have lasted, particularly Primark - I'm surprised! Just goes to show the quality was better in the olden days hahaha

Roundaboot · 02/12/2022 20:56

A Gap hoodie that I bought when I was at university so must have been 1998 or 1999. It's my gardening hoodie now but still gets a regular wear.
I've also a thin long sleeved white t-shirt from the TopShop Tall range. I'm long i the body but this fits perfectly and it's ideal under wooly jumpers so I wear it loads in the winter. I bought it for £5 before I had DS who is now 15 so it must be at least 16 years old.

DuncanBiscuits · 02/12/2022 20:57

I’ve got a Mulberry denim jacket that I’ve worn consistently for twenty years. What a buy that was.

CoffeeMad18 · 02/12/2022 21:02

I have a checked Levi's shirt that I've had since I was 16, I am now 50.
My 17 yr old daughter wears it, but when she's finished with it I will have it back.
It is still in amazing condition - looks brand new.

lljkk · 02/12/2022 21:04

I can't think right now, would need to inspect wardrobe for a while. Probably some pair of socks. There's a dress I wear to funerals that dates from around 1994 (went to a funeral in November 2021, is that too irregular?).

I am interested in "wearing to death" : it's so hard to do !! For at least 10 years I have tried so hard to never buy anything & still I have heaps & heaps of clothing. Far in excess of needs.

Chateaudiaries · 02/12/2022 21:06

From the late 1990’s, a jigsaw brushed cotton shirt, a Whistles black wrap dress and some Burberry blouses. All still worn and not aged.

From the 2000’s a lot of Ralph Lauren and North Face bought when I was living in USA and you got a lot of $ for £ exchange rate. My dd’s wear them now.

enjoyingscience · 02/12/2022 21:07

My go to work suit jacket is 15 years old. The lining is going a bit but otherwise perfect.

several primark pyjamas that are probably 18 now. I fo wonder if they’ll ever die…

the matalan three pack of massive kidney warmer knickers I bought when pregnant with my soon to be nine year old still going strong. I almost respect their tenacity.

Heronatemygoldfish · 02/12/2022 21:09

A set of incredibly comfy velvet hairbands bought from John Lewis in about 1976. They've been re-covered umpteen times, mostly so the colours reflect my changing wardrobes. Still worn daily because my job involves MRI and they are non magnetic.
