Is Mumsnet Premium worth it?

So it's been around for a while now.

Is it worth the money?

Presumably you don't have the promised edit/sorting features?

Are the discounts etc worth it?

This is what I assumed. People are paying out of a sense of loyalty. But not for any real features.

I just use a free adblocker so.i don't get any ads 🤷‍♀️

CourtneeLuv · 02/12/2022 07:21

Other sites have a button at the bottom of the post that allowed you to see the previous unedited version of the post, but that is far too technologically advanced for MN.

The basic-ness of the site is astounding, and it shows even more that they can't get their IT shit together because the apps are different across different operating systems. The apple app is different to the android app.

And they really should be able to add votes to the android app and the filter by op function.

It's quite a joke really.

Ikeabag · 02/12/2022 08:06

Brave browser blocks ads entirely. I get squares of blank. So I know how many I'm blocking with it. It's great.

I have to agree. I'm always amazed at just how basic the site is and how few features it actually has when compared to other sites. It's like MN is stuck in the early 2000s in terms of usability and site design.

I'm also wondering if MN premium members are getting frustrated at the lack of all the promised features especially as MN seem so intent on foisting new and unasked for features upon us recently? We now have the similar threads box and now the god awful menu bar below each post but still no edit button?

Surely they should be more concerned with delivering what they promised to those who faithfully spent their money on the site?

BertieBotts · 03/12/2022 08:27

Premium on MN is not really a service that you buy because it's worth it, it's a donation to support the site. They asked about it when they started to struggle for money.

If that's the case why not just have a donation button / tip jar?

MNHQ are the ones who suggested these features (in a little while) so they obviously felt people wouldn't subscribe unless they were offered something in return.

They didn't need to mention edit buttons and other extras to lure people into spending their money, but they did, and I think it's worth questioning why they haven't added the features they suggested, especially as it's been over 2 years.

So why are they selling it as one?

Are they actively promoting it any more?

I pay for it, no adverts and I get and have got lot of help, comfort and information from the site and have done for 20 years so happy to subscribe tbh

That’s a very damning review. So basically, all you get is no advertisements. Which you could sort yourself.

Well there's a big yellow "premium" button at the top of every page

Is there? I've never noticed, I wondered more if there were threads about it etc.

You get no adverts? Or just fewer ads?

I've just looked, a yellow box with 'Premium' in it doesn't scream active promotion to me. Not sure newbies would even know what it was.

I get no adverts whatsoever

You've totally missed most of my point which was that I'm happy to pay to support the site because I've got so much out of it over the last two decades. Maybe you're newer to the site? The adverts were truly annoying so yes it's great not to have any at all but then they need income from elsewhere if not from people seeing the ads.

Exactly, I've said I'm happy to support it. It's a lifeline for many. If you suffered serious problems like DV, children with SEND, elderly parents etc it's literally a lifesaver. Happy to pay for that and if helps support the site for others who maybe can't afford it but need somewhere to come then I'm more than happy to be doing that too.

Lndnmummy · 03/12/2022 12:12

No not worth it. I will not be renewing.

Sparklingbrook · 03/12/2022 12:16

I get what you meant @Theancetocomein.

When it first came out I did think about it as payment for all the free entertainment I've had over the years (I have enough really serious stuff in RL so enjoy the distraction/escapism element), I already have adblockers because Ads drive me insane but I feel a bit conflicted sometimes.

Sparkling I've seen you on here for many years (I NC all the time but have been here for 20 years). I think it makes a massive difference if it's been part of your life than if maybe you just dip in and out. I sought some advice on here recently about a very particular problem and the support and links I got were just priceless. It's worth it to me but totally understand if others don't get that.

CourtneeLuv · 03/12/2022 12:38

Maybe they should charge the daily mail more for writing about threads 🤔

They make enough money off us and our information imo.

The truth is that those threads that appear in the Daily Mail (or the wider media in general) generate traffic to this site.
I mean look at what Penis Beaker did-loads of new posters arrived. Threads getting shared far and wide is a good thing for business for MN.

Yep this has never been more obvious than with the new menu bar.

Probably the same amount of time though I did de register for a while due to all the security issues. I’ve had a lot from here and given a lot. But that’s the posters, Mumsnet is just the host, and really, they do far better out of us than they would have you think. Someone posted about that (the financial details) when they started on about subscriptions.

Dogsgottabone · 03/12/2022 14:25

I pay for it.

I like having no ads (I'm sure I could work out how to block them on my phone but that's just another thing to add to my to do list!)

I got a case of cider once and also £60 back from signing up to something.

I see it as paying for the entertainment I get. Bored at work? Mumsnet. Lying in bed? Mumsnet. It's like a gossip magazine that's endlessly being updated.

So I don't mind at all.

Beees · 03/12/2022 14:26

They certainly spend more than I had anticipated for a website with no physical presence. I remember being very very surprised at the monthly wage bill when they started asking for people to subscribe.

I think it's easy to forget that without the people who take the time to post, support and signpost those in need MN would be just like any other forum. It's not MN that makes it what it is, it's those who post here.
