Is Mumsnet Premium worth it?

So it's been around for a while now.

Is it worth the money?

Presumably you don't have the promised edit/sorting features?

Are the discounts etc worth it?

I pay for it, no adverts and I get and have got lot of help, comfort and information from the site and have done for 20 years so happy to subscribe tbh

This is what I assumed. People are paying out of a sense of loyalty. But not for any real features.

TinkyWinkyRainbowHead · 01/12/2022 07:20

The lack of an edit button is unbelievably annoying. Even if they would compromise and add a feature where you could edit for 5 minutes after your post was added it would help. It would stop all the posts with your they’re etc which clog things up.

softpilllow · 01/12/2022 07:32

Being able to filter by individual user in a thread is a useful addition but it's not worth £5 a month.

From what I recall it was always going to be a timed feature, which would be great for fixing those annoying errors you don't spot until just after you hit the post button.

I still can't believe MN dangled it as a carrot to get people to subscribe to an overpriced premium service, and then haven't actually implemented it over 2 years later. Surely those who pay for premium have complained about this?

I genuinely believe they can't implement it at a granular level.
I'll put 50p down saying the options ok the platform are either "edit none" or "edit all" perhaps they might be able to apply it at a board level, but not user.
But I'm going to presume it all or nothing, because nightwatch can (presumably) hide any thread.

Maybe they're taking lessons for subscribing options from Jack Monroe ha ha

They should have done a week’s free trial then at least members could try before they buy.

dancingqueen123 · 01/12/2022 08:15

Surely they make enough money from ads?

That would have been more sensible. They should also have been 100% honest that all these supposed benefits were actually just little more than ideas scribbled on paper. I think lots of those who subscribed did so out of misguided loyalty but also because they believed these ideas were actual plans of things they were working on behind the scenes. In reality MN does not seem to have tried to implement any of the features they themselves suggested.

Using an edit button as a lure especially seems very dishonest as they know how often this is requested or suggested. So naturally they knew suggesting it as a perk would lead to people subscribing.

sweetgrapes · 01/12/2022 08:21

I have it. Sorry, I've never used the discounts etc , looked a couple of times but didn't see any I could use..

I consider it my subs for keeping FWR up and running in the face of opposition.

I don't pay the Labour/Libdem's/Greens etc. I pay MN instead.

Like most businesses I would assume they want to maximise profit, rather then just make 'enough'

RambamThankyouMam · 01/12/2022 09:01

I'm not keen. Don't want to spaff 50 quid and then be banned for my rampant TERFery.

None of these features were ready when the premuim 'service' went live. It was all just promises 😂

More fool anyone that signed up. and is STILL paying for it.

CourtneeLuv · 01/12/2022 09:30

And try what, they don't get anything, oh, except a few vouchers for 2 quid off a £500 spend at cos or something just as ridiculous.

sweetgrapes · 01/12/2022 09:35

Looks like I'm the only one. No wonder it's taking ages to build the extra features. 😂
I went in with zero expectations so don't mind - but when it comes to heating Vs MN, the heating will win.

It certainly feels like that's what MNHQ have done. Has there even been an update on the edit button since premium launched?

00100001 · 02/12/2022 01:06

Nah. They would have done it by now if they could.

OP posts:
ItsBritneyBitch45 · 02/12/2022 01:18

I have no clue why anyone would pay for that, even if it was £1 a month

I agree. I don't think it's possible to implement an edit button on the site. It's been 2.5 years since they suggested it as a feature, but there's not even been an update on the progress (or lack of) If they can't offer it then they really shouldn't have dangled it as a carrot for premium members.

Toastedflatbread · 02/12/2022 06:26

My big worry with MN premium is that they can and do ban without prior warning and sometimes with no real reason.

I am not saying that every ban is unjustified but it has been known.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2022 06:28

I don’t think that you should have to pay for an edit function even if they did implement one.

That's a good point. Their terms around banning for a free forum are one thing but if you're paying?

Do yo not get banned / get more freedom to speak if you're a paid subscriber? If not, and they ban you do they automatically cancel your subscription?

ChessieFL · 02/12/2022 07:04

I am a premium member. I subscribed because I use Mumsnet a lot and wanted to make sure it kept going (April 2020, when it launched, was a weird time for worrying that businesses were going to collapse). I didn’t sign up because they promised an edit button so the fact that this hasn’t happened doesn’t bother me.

I like that I don’t get any ads, and as a premium member you get to sign up to product trials in advance of anyone else. I also got a Peloton bike to test for a month and I don’t think that trial was opened up to non-premium members so that was a good benefit. I also got some free cider and there have been other offers for money off things (some have been relevant to me, some haven’t).

Having said that, they do seem to have forgotten about premium - there haven’t been any offers or product trials lately, so unless it improves again I’ll probably cancel next time the subscription comes round. I don’t think there’s a risk of Mumsnet ceasing to exist any more!!

Re the edit button - this is always a topic of hot debate whenever it crops up. While lots of people want it, there’s probably an equal number who don’t so I suspect that’s why it’s never been implemented. Personally I’m on the side of not wanting an edit button - while it would be useful to correct spelling etc it would also allow people getting a hard time to go back and change what they said, which would completely change threads and could make them confusing to read. A time limited edit function would help but even then it would still allow threads to change from the original route.

00100001 · 02/12/2022 07:06

You don't get any ads??

They say "fewer"...?

OP posts:
00100001 · 02/12/2022 07:09

It may be that opinion is split on edite...but it was a feature mentioned right from the beginning of Premium.

It hasn't even been mooted!

They just can't implement it the way they want to and won't admit it yet. They either can't get posters only editing their own posts, or can't limit to Premium only because if platform limitations. There's no other conceivable reason it's never even been discussed. I less you're going to reveal it has been mooted in the Premium chat board??

Imagine if they opened editing to everyone... Premium members would be (quite rightly) annoyed and might unsubscribe or demanding refunds etc.
