One thing I've learned to do as I've got older is to ask for the cake I really want. I always used to get palmed off with the small one. So I would have said - not that one, a big one!

onlythreenow · 29/11/2022 20:46

Definitely tea goes better with the whole jam and cream scenario

Disagree. I'm not in the UK but more people drink coffee here when out than tea, and I can assure you a scone with jam and cream goes down very well with a long black Grin

On holiday my friend and I.had scones. They were delicious but her's was huge compared to.my.gluten.free one. Was gutted. Took her longer to eat her's and I.sat drooling. 🙄

What's the textural difference between biscuits and scones? I've only ever had scones.

Biscuits tend to be a bit lighter and fluffier than scones. The best biscuits are slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. In the Southern US, where I'm from, they are eaten for breakfast and also as an accompaniment to dinner like a roll. At Christmas parties ham biscuits are popular finger food: smaller biscuits filled with ham and a bit of mustard.

The gravy thing is regional, more mountain and Appalachia. In the Deep South, we don't generally eat gravy on biscuits.

Scones started becoming popular in the US about 20 years ago. Starbucks and other coffee shop chains always have them. This time of year, orange cranberry ones are especially popular. Or pumpkin scones. They are usually triangular rather than round.

Scones don’t go with coffee

This!! Coffee with a scone is just plain wrong. It should be illegal.

ACoffeeAtMidnight · 29/11/2022 21:09

SenecaFallsRedux Thank you for the explanation. I appreciate it.

Exactly! That is all kinds of wrong!

StreamingCervix · 29/11/2022 21:23

Can you imagine being given a triangle scone?!

eggandonion · 29/11/2022 22:59

I do like Welsh cakes if I am in Wales.
I don't understand why Marks and Spencer cafe can't do some complex internal transaction and get things from the food hall when they run out of baked goods.

I was disappointed with the pastry selection in M&S ( just croissants) so I went downstairs and bought the one I wanted (delicious custard and berry slice )took it to the cafe and bought a flat white. Blush

eggandonion · 29/11/2022 23:09

Did they not have a notice about consuming fabulous food bought elsewhere on the premises?
My local Marks cafe is will situated for looking out windows at yummy mummies. Shame they run out of food.

Friendofdennis · 29/11/2022 23:13

The iced buns are 2 for £1.50 in the food hall. They are £2.00 each in the cafe

I didn't check. I just wanted my favourite M&S pastry with my morning coffee so I did it. Probably the wildest thing I'll ever do!

eggandonion · 29/11/2022 23:24

I think that is brave. Well done.
They wont get 2 quid for a bun if they don't have buns. And without a bun I might go to the other cafe with no view.
Stupid business model 🤔

North Hampshire has to be THE worst place for cafes & bakery items. Spain isn't far behind. Mind you, just as well, if I still lived in France, Germany or NZ I may no longer fit through the double doors!!

I'll buy the fairies some Kleenex, a GOOD cheese scone is worth a few tears. Though around here, they'd be mine!!

Frenulumetta · 30/11/2022 00:07

I thought this said would you order a scone with coffee and I would have said no absolutely not. Scones are for tea, cake is for coffee an exception could be made for one of those chocolate orange scones I had somewhere or other as that goes with coffee but a normal one on its own or with cream and jam no what is this world coming to but anyway that was not question but in answer to your question. The person serving you was well within their rights to give you the smallest one because you were having coffee honestly some people

Also irritating is when you reject a cake etc they are about to serve you, and ask for a specific one, and they say indignantly, "They are all the same".
You reply, "Well give me the one I want then" and get the grumpy sighs and the thousand-daggers look!

I would love to know why they do this.

Can we have a recipe for the ham and mustard things please?

Here is a recipe for southern-style biscuits. It includes other fillings as well. For a classic ham biscuit, make the biscuits as directed, split in half, spread a bit of mustard, and fill with thinly sliced ham.

Thanks.

Sorry I thought the ham was in the dough. Like some some of scone empanada. 😂

We have a place in Spain and I spent a lot of time there when younger too and I agree that in General Spain can’t do cakes. Strangely if you pop over the border into Portugal you can get some lovely cakes, no idea why.

eggandonion · 30/11/2022 08:47

Portuguese cakes are lovely. We have similar issues in Ireland. Better cakes in Northern Ireland and a selection of unusual scones. Especially in garden centre cafes.

Starbucks in China (I know that is a bit niche) has triangular raisin scones. They are delicious but - imagine this! - they don't give you anything with it. No butter, no jam. They are not dry so it is ok but it is hardly a proper scone experience.
