Looking for a nice lunch.

Anything from burgers and pizza to something less casual.

Must be city centre and have inside seating and be causal as in jeans and winter coats for Xmas market.

Preferably a cocktail menu too!

Blue Barbakan Polish restaurant on Fossgate is my favourite, gorgeous food and a five minute walk from the Christmas market 🙂

NecklessMumster · 27/11/2022 17:23

We went to Enoteca yesterday, Italian. York was heaving and we couldn't find anywhere with space, food was good and not too ££

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 27/11/2022 17:54

Also love Oscar's wine bar, good food and cocktails oscarsyork.co.uk/menu/

Another vote for Oscars. Love it in there!

chikp · 27/11/2022 18:24

Is Star in the city still there?

MarieInternette · 27/11/2022 18:27

Skosh. Delicious small plates kind of food. Definitely worth trying. And yes, to pp Star Inn the City is still there.
Or Roots. Supposed to be fabulous but I’ve not been yet.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 27/11/2022 18:30

Sotano - tapas bar with very good food. Fairly sure they had a cocktail menu but we had wine. You probably need to book though.

Montgomerymmoose · 27/11/2022 18:33

Lucia's .

Essexexile · 27/11/2022 18:43

Cosy Club is one of our favourites, Pairings wine bar is another

EllieQ · 27/11/2022 19:21

Second the Blue Barbakan on Fossgate recommendation - the food is great. It’s in the city centre but slightly away from the main Xmas market area, so should be less busy. The Cosy Club on Fossgate is good as well, and there are a few other restaurants along the street.

The Star Inn The City is also good, but you might need to book.

Traffic can be very busy on Xmas market weekends, so I’d suggest using the Park & Ride if you’re planning to drive there. There have been queues for all the city centre car parks this weekend and last weekend.

whoruntheworldgirls · 27/11/2022 19:27

The start inn the city but very busy so booking needed
The Ivy but again very busy
The Botanist
Cosy Club
Rustique, again very popular so could be busy
Nola has had very good thing said about it

monsteronahill · 27/11/2022 19:31

Lucia's! Cosy, cute, lovely food and not fancy so coats and jeans are all good.

Riverlee · 27/11/2022 19:33

The Italian on Fossgate. Went there whilst on holiday, twice (forgotten its name).

cheesenpickle · 27/11/2022 19:37

another vote for sotana. Lovely food. i really don't understand the hype around the blue barbakan, i was seriously underwhelmed by it. Thai tapas is good, what ever you decide you definitely need to book.

Winterwonderland4 · 27/11/2022 19:45

lavecchiascuola.co.uk/set-lunch-menu/ Go to the old school house (vecchia scuola) on Petergate, prebook and ask for a table in the conservatory which overlooks the minster. It’s the best value lunch in York. Does cocktails too

LittleMy77 · 27/11/2022 19:58

Star Inn is nice with good cocktails but it’s got vv expensive of late!

Meltons is a lovely small independent restaurant that does lunch just on south of the river and they do an excellent wine pairing to their tasting menu

Roots is Michelin star but I found the service mediocre and v obsequious and of the hushed tone variety when describing the micro portions of food

I always rate Ambiente tapas - they do sherry flights (my downfall…) and have a couple of locations around the city

we went to Blue Barbakan on the weekend, food is solid (literally in some ways) but it’s not really out there

try pairings for wine and snacks

word of caution on the Christmas market - go early and take your elbows. It was absolutely insane yesterday (and controversially, I didn’t think it was all that tbh)

LittleMy77 · 27/11/2022 19:59

Oh, one more! Arras restaurant is great - food is great, staff are lovely, just on way out of centre and near the old black swan pub if you want olde worlde drink type place before / after

Lily999888 · 27/11/2022 20:01

Ambiente Tapas - the Fossgate one is my favourite!

user564576 · 27/11/2022 20:05

I'm in York soon and fancy Mexican, has anyone tried Mexicano?

Food and drink stalls are good but I think it's a bit crap too really, lots of tat.

However, another vote for Blue Barbakan. Or Yakamoz on Goodramgate. 😍

Nope, but I’m interested to see what it’s like! It’s tiny from outside and I’d just written it off as a takeaway so interesting to see it does sit down food!

nutellacrumpets · 27/11/2022 20:21

Thanks everyone lots to go on here.

We are going on a rainy cold Monday on the train to the market mainly so I can drink gluwiehn.

I've done meltons and it's fab, ambiente I've done in hull and it's the same small chain and there small was a problem when I went there that put me off.

I've seen fat hippo burgers and little Italy Italian recommended in insta if anyone has any intel. Completely different ends of the $$$$$ spectrum.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 27/11/2022 20:30

Fat hippo in Newcastle was great, I assume the one in York would be good too.
If you’re going on Monday the tapas place I recommended isn’t open.

nutellacrumpets · 27/11/2022 20:42

@Idontgiveagriffindamn lots of places shit in a Monday as i found out last time I went for a long weekend. It's annoying it's my set day off!

Is that the one near Clifford Tower? If so not been for years but bloody love it there, didn't know it was still going! 😁
Many a happy meal there, used to have most of by birthday meals out there in my twenties lol.
