I'm hosting a 1960s themed Nye party. What kind of party food and drink should I serve?
Did they have twiglets in the 60s?😀

I remember the 60s well. Having just looked it up I am glad I have no recollection of Polony.

Anyone remember using the Be-Ro recipe books in domestic science at school?

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/11/2022 08:04

I do. For softening ear wax not for cooking.

Yes the old sepia coloured one. I've got an updated one now that is very good for basic baking.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned the venerable Jam roly poly.

I last had jam roly poly (and custard) at a new years dinner in Australia.

Two years ago, and it wasn’t a 60’s theme night.

Babycham.

Brown ale!

Salad without salad dressing - but with salad cream.

My memory is that there was no salami or liver sausage in the U.K. of 60s - but yes to potted beef, haslet if you were in Yorkshire, boiled ham (in oval tins for authenticity, and tripe.

Definitely nothing with any garlic whatsoever, not until De Gaulle lets us into the EEC.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/11/2022 16:22

I'm pretty sure I had liver sausage sandwiches for my packed lunch in the 60s.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/11/2022 16:22

Also had salami.

Takes me back! Maybe not particularly a party food but I used to like tinned peaches or pear halves with evaporated or condensed milk.
Big memory from being a kid in the 60s is egg & tomato sandwiches. No mayo or salad cream, just mashed together. I loved them.

60s drinks parties might have had Cherry B, Pony and we always had a bottle of Warnink's Advocaat for making snowballs, a bottle of maraschino cherries and tub of lemon slices.

Oh the sophistication ...😁

Oh god yes. The lemon slices were actually pre-prepared and bought in some kind of container. Those and the Maraschino cherries used to look increasingly sad and care-worn as New Years Eve approached.

Snowballs are classic, getting increasingly less lemonade and more Advocaat as the evening went on. I remember the Warnincks adverts on U.K. in the 60s, a sign that Xmas wasn't far off.

I had a mate who used to go underage to the off-licence and buy bottles of Advocaat under the pretence of "getting it in for his mum". In fact he used to drink and offer his mates it in half pint glasses.

We didn't use the Be-Ro book for school cookery but we had one at home. I have it still. I have never met 'coffee kisses' anywhere else.

I clearly remember liver sausage. It was a regular feature of Saturday tea. Eaten with toast while watching Dr Who.

Grab yourself a copy of this book

Love it - 1970s cocktail book, complete with guide of what to put in your home bar. My fave is the Chevron's Moon Landing, which is served in a hollowed-out pineapple made to look like the moon lander...

The food wasn't great to be honest in the 60s

RosesAndHellebores · 28/11/2022 22:10

Oh I.don't know, I really fancy pineapple fritters now.

Or a slice of.melon as a starter, with a glacé cherry. The glacé cherry was also handy for half a grapefruit starter.

Cheese soufflé for lunch was nice too

justasking111 · 28/11/2022 22:26

2am after a night of dancing our group would go for a Chinese. Pineapple or banana fritters with syrup. Food of the gods 😂
