1960s food and drink?

I'm hosting a 1960s themed Nye party. What kind of party food and drink should I serve?
Did they have twiglets in the 60s?😀

I was a child in the 60s.
Things I remember eating at family celebrations - merangues filled with fresh cream, sherry trifle, date slices, coconut macaroons, pork pie, home made crusty bread, tinned salmon sandwiches, cheese scones.

I remember twiglets - the one and only time my sisters and I had them was the night we had a chimney fire and mum and dad brought us next door to be minded by the neighbours while the firemen clumped through the house. The neighbours were very sophisticated people who had had a party earlier in the evening, and had a good few leftover twiglets. Their house smelled of cigar smoke and perfume. Ours smelled of burning tar...

There were also gherkins. The 60s were the heyday of the gherkin.

We used to make brandy snaps round the handle of a wooden spoon. Tricky but great fun! Sixties again I think. Also loved doing profiteroles with choux pastry.

We also used to make meringues in a Flatley clothes drier because the gas oven was too fast. They were my mother's speciality.

Get on Amazon and look for the Hamlyn All colour cookbook (1970). Here are a few corkers

@NotMeNoNo I still have my copy! and was coming on to suggest my signature recipe from this, Quiche Lorraine! Learned to cook from this book.

Weird spongy flan cases filled with jelly and tinned mandarin oranges with some blogs of synthetic cream stuff to decorate and a glacé cherry .

God, I remember those! My mum used some sort of red gelatin rather than jelly.

Looks like you can still buy the cases:

We had the fruit flan thing as well, topped with tinned cream. It was my job (under sufferance) to shake the tinned cream until it thickened - a pretty exhausting job!

When we went to my grandparents us kids were given the job of rolling the tinaround the garden to thicken it. They emigrated 1969 so definitely a 60s thing. I loved that cream an, thanks to this thread, I now have a craving for it.

Was thinking back to 60s food the other day. This wont help for a party but I cant believe how much tea everyone used to drink. Start the day with a cup. Arrive at work, have a cup. 2 hours later, 'tea break'. Then lunch and a cup of tea. Tea trolley (welcome to the museum, young ones) about 3ish. Go home have cup of tea. Another after your meal and that was probably it for the day. Rarely saw coffee. Never saw bottled water. I drink 3 or 4 cups of tea a year these days. Reached saturation point many years ago, I think.

My tea drinking is still in the 60s then. I don't drink much water.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much everyone!
So many ideas. My plan is to do a buffet. The table would be heaving with all these suggestions.
I'll definitely use some of them. Love the idea of a rabbit sitting on green jelly😀
I'll post a photo of it all after.
Thanks again.

Taking notes. It's my 50th, so as part of my plans I'm gonna have a 70's party.

Also anyone else remember symingtons 'table creams' - like a cross between blamange and Angel delight

YES!!! They were lovely, the Maple & Walnut was my favourite.

Anyone remember liver sausage?

Yes, still used to have this in the 80s!

ChristmasJ · 27/11/2022 18:27

It definitely wasn't me who went into the cupboard and ate all the trifle sponges 😋

pandora206 · 27/11/2022 18:28

Oh, I'd forgotten brandy snaps. They're delicious, especially filled with cream, but very tricky to make. Must buy some for Christmas.

Yes, still used to have this in the 80s!

Wasn't there something called polony as well?

I'm pretty sure my mum used to buy it. It was a fat sausage shape, smooth texture and in a tight red plastic covering sealed at both ends.

Also vegetable and potato salad by Heinz, in a small tin. I used to love it, made my Sunday tea if mum had them on the table.

ChristmasJ · 27/11/2022 18:31

Hi Pandora, can you fit a brandy snap in your mouth without it falling to bits, it takes a certain kind of skill, I just end up crunching mine up. Delish !

ChristmasJ · 27/11/2022 18:33

I absolutely loved those little tins of vegetable and potato salad. But the very best for me was....drum roll...Cheese Footballs...the absolute best !

Remainiac · 27/11/2022 18:36

@CaptainMyCaptain I make a raspberry mousse with jelly and evaporated milk! It always goes down well (I’m a child of the 60s myself and it is my late MiL’s recipe).

Go you! I remember boiling the tin of evap in a pan of water but can't remember why or if it really matters.

Remainiac · 27/11/2022 18:39

You don’t need to do that for the mousse but you do need to whisk until thick.

KateMcCallister · 27/11/2022 18:39

@cobblers123 yes I remember the Heinz salad too! I've just googled and Morrisons still sell polony groceries.morrisons.com/products/morrison-polony-258262011

I wonder if I can find liver sausage?

Also this is probably mild derailing but does anyone remember when you could buy actual cream cheese in a tub that wasn't Philadelphia type "soft cheese?" I can't find it anywhere anymore and it's far superior for cheesecakes

I know what you mean. It was much more solid in texture

KateMcCallister · 27/11/2022 18:46

@CaptainMyCaptain yes it was, much firmer. Was nice for bagels too but really, my cheesecakes were far superior with proper cream cheese. So odd for it to have become obsolete!
