1960s food and drink?

I'm hosting a 1960s themed Nye party. What kind of party food and drink should I serve?
Did they have twiglets in the 60s?😀

Oh god I think the 60s was the worst for food. Good luck! Grin

Mortifive · 27/11/2022 14:08

This thread has made me feel very nostalgic.

I can't contribute much as all I remember eating is things like egg and chips, bacon and chips, bacon, egg and chips - you get the picture! And for puddings lots of apple pie, egg custard tart, seed cake, tinned fruit in evaporated milk.

Drinks - sherry, scotch (and one of those siphon things with soda to put in it), advocat, lager, martini, Campari.

I second getting hold of some Fanny Craddock cookbooks or even keep an eye out on the tv - I saw a few episodes of her show with poor Johnny a couple of years ago.

Angel Delight. Butterscotch or mint flavour

The strawberry one for the 60s, yes, but I've got a feeling that the butterscotch and the mints ones may have been 70s innovations.

@longwayoff I drink more tea than that nowadays - and it's mugs now rather than the little cups people used to drink from. Possibly has come out of WFH though as I drunk a lot more coffee or Pepsi when I was in the office .

shinynewapple22 · 27/11/2022 14:26

@sevenbyseven for a lot of people, no I don't think things did change. And to be fair - a lot of the foods mentioned are included on buffets
even today.

Was thinking back to 60s food the other day. This wont help for a party but I cant believe how much tea everyone used to drink. Start the day with a cup. Arrive at work, have a cup. 2 hours later, 'tea break'. Then lunch and a cup of tea. Tea trolley (welcome to the museum, young ones) about 3ish. Go home have cup of tea. Another after your meal and that was probably it for the day. Rarely saw coffee. Never saw bottled water. I drink 3 or 4 cups of tea a year these days. Reached saturation point many years ago, I think.

I probably drink more tea than this!!

True! It's a while since I last saw a vol au vent though 😃

Squirrelsnut · 27/11/2022 14:33

I drink probably 10cups a day, easy.

LadyMarmaladeAtkins · 27/11/2022 14:38

Fruit punch was very popular both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Make sure they look and taste different to one another to avoid confusion, and that some wag doesn't put vodka in the non-alcoholic one. Designated drivers might still want their own sealed orange juices etc. to be sure.

Thank God for the beef olives and the glazed ham.

snowspider · 27/11/2022 14:44

Brandy snaps
Flags on sandwiches
Silverskin onions served with cocktail sticks
Cucumber slice on ritz cracker with blob of cream cheese on the top
Fingers of thin toast with liver pate on
Stuffed olives
Eclairs
Melon balls

NotMeNoNo · 27/11/2022 14:45

Get on Amazon and look for the Hamlyn All colour cookbook (1970). Here are a few corkers

A long with devilled eggs, a really seasonal 60s buffet usually had devils on horseback, prunes wrapped in bacon and grilled. I've also had them made with dates and bacon which was very good.

Has this thread given you plenty of ideas @Izzabellasasperella ?

My mum had the Robert Carrier cookbook for dinner parties

ivykaty44 · 27/11/2022 14:49

My mum always made the flans with a flan case with jellied fruit (or pie filling) in the centre
mine made those type of flan

snowspider · 27/11/2022 14:51

I'm trying to remember and not conflate the 60s with the 70s.

Vol au vents
Melba toast with chicken liver pate and salmon pate
Smoked salmon pinwheels
Cocktail sausages
Devils on horseback
Cheese straws
Proper home made sausage rolls
Crustades filled with cream cheese, mayonnaise and decorated with prawns
Stuffed devilled egg with the filling piped in and sprinkled with paprika

A lot of things were sprinkled with paprika come to think of it.

To be honest I can't remember those sorts of buffets much - when my grandparents entertained in large numbers they usually served a huge gammon, a huge rib of beef and there would be salads to go with them. Or there would be some sort of braise, served with rice.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/11/2022 14:57

Radish Roses- there were always radishes and watercress as a garnish.

AdaColeman · 27/11/2022 14:58

I've still got my Robert Carrier cookery book, Great Dishes of the World. He was good at detailed instructions for preparation, how to clean mussels for instance. I still make quite a few of his recipes.

HilaryThorpe · 27/11/2022 15:03

We also had that Carrier book in the late sixties. I think his oven must have been more powerful than the one in our student flat though, we had to increase all the cooking times. 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 27/11/2022 15:05

Hello Ada. Yes, I've a series of Robert Carrier books, one is for party food and gives a brilliant recipe for stuffed mussel shells. More 70s though I think. I haven't had those out for ages.

Coronation chicken
Tinned salmon
Fruit flan, with tinned fruit in jelly in a sponge flan case.

My kids made this recently !

Chiffon dessert in a strawberry flavour, made by Royal. They also did a packet for lemon.meringue pie.

Carrier was also 80s, I have the complete Carrier's kitchen which was a weekly publication, all 9 or 10 volumes of it.

Shouldershoddy · 27/11/2022 15:11

Absolutely love vol au vents…I make them for my family every Christmas! I managed to buy the last box in Sainsburys today 🥳

shinynewapple22 · 27/11/2022 15:12

@snowspider ooh brandy snaps - with cream piped inside them - always had these for Christmas (1970s) - wonder if you can still get them?
