Pass The Parcel - Lucky's Dad Rules or Not?

Daughters party is coming up and she wants pass the parcel. Husband and I are discussing which method to use. Do we use the old style (Lucky's Dad's rules (Bluey Ref) of one really good prize) or do we do a prize in every layer with a slightly better prize at the end?

We both kind of want Lucky's Dad's rules as we grew up with that, but also don't want a bunch of upset kids as they haven't got a prize.

Sweet inside every layer. I used to put lollipops inside but that’s probably frowns upon nowadays!

I find a sweet in every layer odd too, but thinking back to parties in the 80’s when I was a child, pass the parcel was pretty boring. Especially when 20+ children all have to have a layer to unwrap.

I’d either scrap a pass the parcel, or put sweets in each layer.

You mean you don't watch bluey you're missing out. Grin

I’m quite old and we used to play Lucky Dad’s rules. The “prize” was getting to unwrap a layer, which was exciting and fun compared to just passing the parcel round. Easily amused back in the day.

These days I’d put a sweet in and a forfeit for older kids.

Every layer a small prize

Born in the 70s and I can remember a mixture of just one prize, a sweet in every layer and forfeits (with a sweet upon successful completion).

I had a school friend who was a very good gymnast and every party we went to she did the splits as a forfeit!

One main prize and definitely no win for the birthday child

This is the exact conversation we had last night about this! Bless Lucky's Dad for bringing it up again for a new generation 🤣

Maybe we do it old school but warn them before hand that it is old rules.

It's a birthday party, not a morality lesson.

Also if they get a sweet they stay sitting down and play reasonably nicely, rather than losing interest or getting resentful. Don't know about you but I find organising my kids' birthday parties stressful enough without adding a bunch of upset, disappointed, hard done by kids to the mix.

(my kids are well past the pass the parcel stage, thankfully)

Small packet of haribo or a fun size chocolate in each layer. I did stickers once and had to cope with a mutiny from 12 v cross 5 year olds. I also swap the paper after wrapping the main prize so it's obvious when you get there. That way you can ensure it's not going to birthday child (or any other participants who've maybe already won plenty for example).

I thought this thread was going to be, should the birthday child be the winner or not'.

we had 10 children at my daughters party so had 10 parcels wrapped just with a silly prize in the middle and everyone got a parcel to hold and un wrap every time the music stopped - it was much fun !

The hardest lesson for children to learn is to lose - it’s a skill - one you are not teaching them.

Token present every layer, one nice present for main prize. X
