I can't breathe and my chest is making noises like a deflating balloon 🎈

Rang 111 and didn't expect to be told there's an ambulance coming

I can't get hold of my dd or ds or ex hubby. I'm alone and I do y want to go to hospital as I e 2 dogs here.

I'm meant to be at a funeral Monday. (Hopefully not my own )

I fucking hate hospitals .

OP didn't call for an ambulance. she called 111 and they dispatched the ambulance

because that’s what they have to do when the computer algorithm tells them to, they’re not medically trained.

OP could have said “I’m able to get myself there thanks, don’t send an ambulance” like I did a few months ago. I was very surprised that they suggested it and they certainly didn’t argue when I said I’d make my own way there

A taxi to my 'local' hospital would cost around £65 each way. OP didn't request an ambulance or transport to the hospital. One was sent by the medically trained professional who spoke to her and heard the wheezing.

Breathing difficulties can go from mildly irritating to deadly very, very quickly.

they’re not medically trained. they’re call centre staff. ambulances also don’t exist to take people who don’t want to pay for a taxi 🙄

well done you. OP is alone, unwell and scared. maybe next time, she will do that huh

3luckystars · 27/11/2022 03:58

Well if her breathing is not good then driving is not safe.

HeresTheTea · 27/11/2022 03:59

I think it's unkind assuming the OP isnt seriously unwell if she is updating on Mumsnet - that's not a helpful comment.

I've been in OPs situation, alone, asthmatic, chest infection, seriously unable to breathe and waiting for an ambulance- it's bloody scary - reaching out on mumsnet literally can be a lifesaver in moments like this.

Hope you get relief soon OP.

Do you know she can make her own way there? People have different situations and she may not have been able to get there without help.

maybe. or maybe next time an ambulance won’t be an option because someone’s broken a finger or had their first contraction

Oh ok so the NHS should pay £250 for it instead

well that, or a person would just have to stay home and take their chances. people cant just conjure taxi fare out of thin air

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 27/11/2022 04:07

OP didn’t call an ambulance, they called 111 for advice. Stop having a go..

Fleurdaisy · 27/11/2022 04:09

Do you have any hot water bottles? If you do, make up 2. Prop yourself up with pillows and put one against your back, one on your chest, keep there as long as they stay warm.
Hopefully some anti bs or even a go on a nebuliser will help.

MarmaladeFatkins · 27/11/2022 04:09

anyway @stillvicarinatutu hope you are ok and the ambulance has reached you

VacancyAtNumber10AGAIN · 27/11/2022 04:09

She didn’t ask for the ambulance.

why are these threads always full of medical professionals telling people over the internet what they do and don’t need.
sometimes when you can’t breathe properly distraction stops you from really panicking.

get well soon op xx

Namaste6 · 27/11/2022 04:10

Here for you OP. They'll take you in and get some antibiotics into you and very likely put you on a nebuliser as others have mentioned. Do you have an oximeter in your first aid box? If not, put that on your shopping list for sure. Get your cup of tea and go sit in your bathroom - run the shower hot until the medics arrive. Also, do you have a neighbour or friend close by that can take care of your dogs.

Also to the poster who suggested that an ambulance was not appropriate for her. If you're medically trained you should know how quickly these things can turn. This thread was not to sit in judgement but to help the op through a worrying few hours. Tread lightly.

Dita73 · 27/11/2022 04:11

Sounds like pleurisy. Get well soon

Frequency · 27/11/2022 04:11

Maybe it varies from area to area but I've never had a 111 call handler send an ambulance according to an algorithm. The call handlers will ask a series of questions and triage you into a queue for a call back from the duty GP who is the one who decides if an ambulance is needed.

JaniceBingALing · 27/11/2022 04:14

It's horrid OP. I've been home with a severe chest infection for a week and tonight it seems worse than ever. I was hospitalised with covid last year and this seems just as bad. Feel better soonFlowers

thewolfandthesheep · 27/11/2022 04:19

I guess they are there by now, hope everything is fine OP and that you can get well very quickly.

Cantseethewindows · 27/11/2022 04:20

I'm sorry to hear you're unwell OP. I hope the ambulance is there soon. I can't believe people are having a go at you for doing the right thing (calling 111) and following the advice you were given. 111 do often advise you to make your own way to A&E. The fact that they've dispatched an ambulance instead suggests that you need one. Of course they're call centre staff and some discretion is required, but you don't sound like you should be driving and I imagine taxis are hard to come by too. I'm really not sure how unwell you need to be in order to be deserving of an ambulance according to some people on here. The NHS crisis is nothing to do with people calling ambulances for broken fingers, and everything to do with chronic underfunding and structural problems. But do keep mocking and blaming people for daring to use ambulances. The Tories will be ever so grateful you're saving them a propaganda job

I have. I was calling about DS and mentioned his head was bobbing. This was obviously some trigger word to send an ambulance (he wasn't that bad, I didn't know head bobbing can also describe a symptom of severe respiratory distress) and an ambulance was dispatched. It was there within 10-15 minutes.

Namaste6 · 27/11/2022 04:28

Hope they're with you now OP. Get well soon. Xx
