Best thing to stop a cold in its tracks.

I know I know that bed rest is the best thing but this time of year is the all hands on deck/must have a voice/haven’t got capacity to be sick time for my job. I have that tickly/feel like a swallow a lump/sinus clarity of head that premeditates a cold for me. I need to take something that will stop it in its tracks… something that will keep me going all day but knock me out at night - what is your go to medicines?
Please no lectures about working - it’s just not possible at this time of year - it’s either working and feeling miserable or working and taking something to keep me going. I will be covid testing and wearing a mask. Other times of the year I have a much better work/life balance.

A hot toddy made with taquila. Blows your head off and blows the cold away. It does need to be quite strong and you will probably fall asleep and sweat like a pig but it works.

First Defence or the Boots version! Miraculous. Not a Keto diet 🙄

Kind of hard for you to say considering you're not me and I doubt you've tried it. It's the only thing I've done differently and consistently for the last 2.5years that could explain it.

But you do you. I was just saying what has helped me personally to prevent colds for the last couple years when I used to suffer from 6+ a year along with sinus infections prior to changing my diet. Not needed the Vicks First Defence since then, but it did help to ward off previous cold symptoms back then for me.

Vickes first defence spray gave me the first and only migraine I've ever had. Honestly it was the weirdest experience of my life!
The pain was that intense that I was hallucinating and having a conversation with it (the pain...) and thought that I lived inside it.
lasted about 4 hours - and I still got the cold!

My go to is berrocca (own brand version is fine) with Zinc - probably shouldn't but I double dose it. Makes your wee a crazy colour.

Generally maintaining a good diet with loads of vegetables and lots of water to keep defences high.

Vicks First Defence spray - you can't believe how effective it is until you use it

This is amazing. But you have to use it at the first sign of trouble.

Yes to this plus Difflam throat spray. Kill that virus in all its hiding places😊

Useyourfork · 26/11/2022 07:46

Nasal irrigation worked instantaneously for my sinuses.
I use sterile saline pods and it takes a bit of practice.

Jinglejangleyeah · 26/11/2022 07:48

First defence!

LoobyDop · 26/11/2022 07:50

First Defence is amazing if you use it as soon as you’ve been exposed. I’m pretty sure I’ve avoided several colds that way. Once you’ve got symptoms it’s too late.

Inasec24 · 26/11/2022 07:54

Get in bed as early as possible when you get home from work. Cancel as much as possible that isn't work.

Definitely this.

I first started using it in pregnancy cos I couldn't use anything else. And couldn't believe that it worked so well!

This.

Or any of the other brands.

I was sceptical until I worked at extremely close quarters with 26 unvaccinated Japanese teenagers, as in 121 teaching across a desk so breathing all over each other and within 3 days 22 had Covid.

I also take Solgar Immune vitamins- they are a multi vitamin (and the best brand IMO) with sambuca, vitamin C , zinc and all the other immune defence things.

Livedandlearned · 26/11/2022 08:21

I swear by the Lidl immunity tablets, I take one when I feel a cold beginning and that always works for me.

BEAM123 · 26/11/2022 08:25

Vicks First Defence is brilliant, I also use it if l've been in a busy place eg a packed train or near to someone who has a cold. It stops the virus taking hold in your nose and replicating.

peridito · 26/11/2022 08:27

Not read all posts so sorry if repetition .Apparently cold air affects the lining of the nose and turns off /diminishes an automatic immune response .
Heard programme on Radio 4 where a top medic/researcher into subject of colds said that when she gets a cold she wears a mask ,particularly when indoors .Says keeping environment round her nasal passageways warm and moist helps her body fight the virus.

boatahoy · 26/11/2022 08:55

Vicks First Defence nasal spray. It's unbelievably good at stopping a cold in its tracks. Amazing stuff

lurchermummy · 26/11/2022 10:28

A bit late but I always keep echinacea tincture (not tablets) in the house and drink a glass of water with 15 drops in 3 times a day at the very first sign of a sniffle, plus high dose vit C and zinc. Absolutely swear by it - but once the cold has developed it won't work.

I woke up feeling like a cold was starting and bought Vicks first defence first thing this morning. I will see how it goes. Hopefully it works.
