I need to renew DS passport. he is 17 so it will be an adult passport that he gets. i am confused which option to choose.

renew child passport because it is a child passport that has expired?

first adult passport - this says if you haver never had a passport?

renew adult passport because he wants an adult one?

I am probably overthinking it massively but I cant figure it out!

I think it's his first adult passport.

It's no 'first adult passport' as :

Quote:
You can apply for a first adult passport if all of the following apply:
you’re a British national
you’re aged 16 or over (or will be in 3 weeks)
you’ve never had a UK passport before
You must also apply if your last UK passport was issued before 1 January 1994.

I think it is renew.

I think try renew Child passport, and then when the software clocks the birth date it will ask the right questions for an adult passport.

AND if it doesn't, cancel, go back and try renew adult passport

TeenDivided · 23/11/2022 12:19

If you say 'renew adult' one of the first things it asks for is date of birth

Chersfrozenface · 23/11/2022 12:26

The gov.uk advice above is unclear to me.

However, a number of travel advice sites say you have to apply for a first adult passport even if you've had a child passport

It might be best to phone the Passport Office advice line to check, the number is 0300 222 0000.

It is ridiculous that they can't make it clear for this common situation.

That said, they were remarkably efficient. DH & I applied to renew recently on a Monday, and got our new passports on the Thur & Fri respectively.

TurtleTriplets · 23/11/2022 12:56

I am so glad no one else thinks it is clear, I was doubting myself. I think I will have to ring them.

When you get the answer can you post it please? DD needs her first adult one soon.

TurtleTriplets · 23/11/2022 13:26

The guy on the phone also didn't know the answer but he went and found out - It is an adult renewal.

Super. That's really quick if you do the code for the photo thing.

TurtleTriplets · 30/11/2022 15:23

If anyone is still interested- the adult renewal was the correct option. DS application has been approved today and will be printed and sent out.

Passport has been printed and should be on its way soon.
