OVERPRICED ELECTRICIAN

OPINIONS PLEASE! SORRY IT'S LONG-WINDED!

I had an electrician round this morning (won't mention his name).
Was supposed to be here at 9 and at 9.30 I texted to see if he was still coming, and he replied that he'd be here about an hour later.
Nice of him to let me know.
Not a good start.
I've have had him to do work before and he was good.

I needed a fluorescent tube replacing under a wall unit in the kitchen. As the other two fluorescent tubes have been in situ for a few years, I said I would have them all replaced so they all lasted a long time. For some reason he brought another guy with him, which was unnecessary, and he always did the work alone before. They went to get the required items. Didn't take long for the work to be done. I also had an oven light replaced and a screw put into the bathroom light fitting, which had come loose. So nothing major. The tube that wasn't working flickered if it was turned on, which apparently means the control gear inside the fitting was faulty.

Anyway I should have asked how much beforehand, but as nothing major, just replacement of oven light and 3 fluorescent tubes, and fitting a screw in the bathroom light fixture, I didn't really think of it. Anyway, I nearly passed out when he said I had to pay £170!

I had some money kept for any work I needed doing, but it wasn't enough and I had to raid my purse to make up the amount.I said it was much more than I expected. He said everything has gone up. (That old chestnut! Blame inflation, Covid, whatever) But I do realise things have got more expensive.

After he had gone I was stressing about it and I texted him and said I’ve just had a look at the lights. I only wanted new fluorescent tubes, not a whole new system! I didn’t need this extra expense, especially on top of Christmas.
You should have asked me. I was shocked at the cost.

HIM :
I’m sorry, you did say to change them all, it’s hard to get hold of them tubes now days and they will prob cost around the same about the same

ME:
I don’t know why you didn’t ask me. you could have rung me from the shop and explained how much they would have cost and I would have said just replace the tube that’s blown. (There seem to be loads of fluorescent tubes £5-£10! from what I saw on the internet.)

HIM:
Ok, it’s was just the tube as it was flickering, it would have been the control gear inside the fitting, that’s why we ask if you want to change them all so they match. (I said I wanted to change all 3 TUBES so they all lasted a long time).

No mention was made about replacing the entire fitting for THREE lights.

HIM:
Ok, well between us we have miss communicated, what you like to do about this?

HIM:
I’ll come back and give you £70 back. So you are just paying for the materials.

He came back a couple of hours later and gave me the money back, but I've still paid £100 for what I considered a small job. I wish I had just left things as they are.

He said after this don't contact me about any more electrical work. I said well I wouldn't would I? I'm still fuming.

Don't know how you do a poll of am I being unreasonable!

You sound very unreasonable to me.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/11/2022 17:57

How much do you think the job should have cost ?

ChocHotolate · 22/11/2022 17:59

You are paying for the knowledge and skills (which you clearly don't have, neither do I). Therefore if you want a job done you have to pay what they charge

kitkatkitkatkitty · 22/11/2022 18:00

I think he sounded reasonable offering to charge you just for the materials to keep a good relationship

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 22/11/2022 18:00

I don't think its a bad price. Good luck trying to find a cheap electrician. You're paying for their skills and expertise. Its not something you can do yourself

Idontevenknow · 22/11/2022 18:01

I can't believe that anyone would book a tradesman without checking the price

dementedpixie · 22/11/2022 18:02

Yabu and now you've lost an electrician that you said you had used in the past with no issues

Mammillaria · 22/11/2022 18:03

I'm sorry but I do think you were being unreasonable. Electricians are highly qualified tradespeople and that seems a reasonable price. I can also see why he assumed you wanted the whole light assembly replacing.

I can also see why you were so shocked if you were expecting to pay less, so you have my sympathy. It was very nice of the Electrician to refund you his time. In future a general 'handy man' might be better for changing out bulbs as they are a lot cheaper for things like changing out bulbs and screwing in light fittings.

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 18:03

HappyHolidai Seriously?!

OP posts:
Everyflippingusernameistaken · 22/11/2022 18:04

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious But I didn't ASK for all the fittings to be replaced, just the tubes! He also didn't need an assistant!

OP posts:
CraftyGin · 22/11/2022 18:06

Couldn't you have done the work yourself?

The assistant was most likely an apprentice. That's how every learns a trade.

ShandaLear · 22/11/2022 18:08

An electrician is £60 the minute he walks - through your door plus about £60-£80 an hour plus materials. Bulbs can easily be £10 each. So £170 sounds about right. That said, bulbs are really easy to change. It’s generally just a matter of popping the old one out and popping a new one in. You really should learn to do it yourself.

amiold · 22/11/2022 18:09

Electricians are always expensive

How much were three full fittings when you looked?

I'd have paid and not got him back again - strange that he came back and give you money though if he'd charged a fair price.

On the other hand, would you have complained if he'd done it cheap for you?

Highfivemum · 22/11/2022 18:10

So he earns 75 pounds for driving to the shop collecting your bulbs driving to your house and fitting them and doing a couple of other jobs !!! That to me sounds like he is the one who should be miffed. He was very good to bring you some money back. No one does anything for free and he will be paying tax and insurance and petrol money.
I thing you are the one being unreasonable.

Hooverphobe · 22/11/2022 18:12

Yabu. If it was such a “small” job why didn’t you do it yourself? 🤷‍♀️

doitwithlove · 22/11/2022 18:13

You mentioned he did not need anyone to come with him, clearly you were not charged for the guy who came with him.

You do sound very unreasonable !!

FourTeaFallOut · 22/11/2022 18:15

Jesus, wonder who I can ring and tell them I paid too much and have them pop round and give the money back?

stuntbubbles · 22/11/2022 18:15

YABU and I’m not surprised he doesn’t want your custom anymore!

MargaretThursday · 22/11/2022 18:15

He sounds more than reasonable. You're paying for a service from someone who has experience.
Next time I expect he won't have time for you.

TabithaTittlemouse · 22/11/2022 18:18

I can’t believe he refunded you! And that you are still moaning about it!

You are very cheeky!

Chikapu · 22/11/2022 18:20

Electricians are expensive, I can't believe you took your money back. Word of advice, don't ever call a plumber!

Threadkillacilla · 22/11/2022 18:21

I think YABU it sounds like you didn't discuss what the job was, didn't watch him replace the lights and got a shock. Electricians are retested regularly for their part P certification so £170 per hour for a qualified, insured professional isn't unreasonable.

IamSmarticus · 22/11/2022 18:24

Next time you just want a light bulb changing, I would suggest you find a local handyman rather than a fully qualified electrician (who has probably got better things to do).

dottyrobin · 22/11/2022 18:25

YABU, if cost was a problem you should have agreed on a price before hand.
I also think £170 is reasonable anyway!

How much did you think it would be?
