I thought people were struggling with money yet yesterday and today the High Street where I live was swarming with people and both Sainsburys were packed. SE of England.

Fucks sake. Because not everyone is sitting inside in the freezing cold much as the media would like to have it?
There's a thread at the moment we're someone's kids want to earn over 100k and she's had some
Nasty comments. It's not a race
To the fucking bottom. I've got money to spend, I'm spending it

midgetastic · 22/11/2022 17:31

Thursday I think the shopping centre one was done the other week

What about on line shopping - there are still
Delivery drivers round here so there can't be a cost of living crisis ?

Gyms of course and swimming pools and antique fairs ....

CraneBoysMysteries · 22/11/2022 17:37

This smacks of 'It was cold today...where's all this global warming nonsense'

Or the

'I went to Tesco at 6am on Xmas Eve morning and it was RAMMED with idiots shopping'

veeringsouth · 22/11/2022 17:41

I'm going to the car show room tomorrow to look at a new Audi. Is that ok, OP? (Who has money to burn what with being on holiday, nails done and a splurge on a candle).

Onthegrid · 22/11/2022 17:42

I went to our nearest big town on Saturday, the roads and car parks were bustling and I commented to my DH that is was a change from last year when we were coming out of Covid and it was quiet.
I don’t expect everyone was shopping, nor that they were spending what they used to, it is a very mixed town with some very deprived areas and the upcoming commuter hotspots and Tory villages a bit further out.
I am very fortunate to be in the protected higher income low borrowing sector and I will continue to spend, locally where possible. I am not shielded from the issues and see the effects through family and friends who I will try to help where I can. There is a CoL crisis and it will get worse.

Notanotherone6 · 22/11/2022 17:45

Well, you were there, despite the cost of living crisis. Presumably these other people had a similar agenda.

Oujiawoowoo · 22/11/2022 17:46

Yes, this is the new “why is everyone out and about - it’s a pandemic!!” thread but now it’s the “cost of living crisis”. The irony is completely lost on these people that they themselves are out and about.

Although I believe OP is just having a laff anyway!

OldEnoughToHaveReadBunty · 22/11/2022 17:47

Yeah. I went to big Tesco on Saturday & there were queues snaking around the carpark. I was a bit surprised as its not usually that busy the weekend before most people's payday.

Turns out the exit traffic lights were out of sequence only allowing 3 cars to leave at a time.

Threadkillacilla · 22/11/2022 17:49

Nails done? You wastrel.

CraigDavid · 22/11/2022 18:00

You seem hard of thinking OP. Do you think maybe the people out spending are the same people who can't afford to put the heating on? Probably not. HTH.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/11/2022 18:04

Most people I know are making some cuts but are still putting on their heating and shopping for Christmas. Even if people decide to cut what they buy for Christmas by 50% they still have to shop for those cheaper gifts.

DenholmElliot11 · 22/11/2022 18:07

Plenty of people have got enough disposable income to pay a bit more for goods and services without it really affecting them

the80sweregreat · 22/11/2022 18:20

A lot of people I know are not feeling the pinch ; they might moan a bit about their energy bills , but most of them seem to be doing ok.
I don't live in a particularly affluent area or anything, but people I work with seem to be out a lot and planning a big Christmas and so on.

Dadof5gremlins · 22/11/2022 18:24

I personally love reading these things on MN. Love the info from afar.

FrauleinEngelhart · 22/11/2022 18:26

Have the big fuel bills hit yet ? And many people will be hammering the credit cards.

Katapolts · 22/11/2022 18:27

People are still buying food???

Crazy.

Spudlet · 22/11/2022 18:27

People don’t have to be on the bones of their arse to cut back a bit. Quite a few people can still afford to spend some money, but just not as much as before. They’re leaving it a bit longer between haircuts, maybe going out for a coffee when before it would have been lunch. I’m seeing more people book me for 30 minutes than I have done before, as that’s a little cheaper than an hour.

barskits · 22/11/2022 18:28

Normally the shops are pretty much deserted on a wet Monday in mid November, but not yesterday afternoon.

KitchenSupper · 22/11/2022 18:28

I used to spend five times as long shopping when I didn’t have any money, because I had to consider all the options and work out what I could afford. I spend less time while spending more money now.
Just because people are in shops, it doesn’t mean they are spending lots of money.

boboshmobo · 22/11/2022 18:29

I work in non essential retail , plenty of money around or people are in debt 🤷‍♀️

Lots of people are struggling but not everyone is struggling.

The people you saw will have been a combination of shopping and window shopping. Cash and credit cards.

Seeing people in shops does not mean there aren't a lot of people really struggling.

How very dare other people also be out doing exactly the same thing you were OP 🙄
