Employers and Cost of Living

totallybonafido · 22/11/2022 14:42

There was a thread about this a couple of months ago, but not many employers seemed to have done anything at that time - maybe more have now that it's getting colder and Christmas is coming?

Has your employer made any extra cost of living payments to you, aside from your usual expected payrise or bonus, if you have one?

Local authority here - nothing has been agreed as yet. A few options have been talked about including redundancies to pay for the pay rise if it goes ahead. We are very low paid anyway.

The pay rise is agreed for local authorities. Flat rate of £1925 for everyone on JNC T&Cs - so about 10% at lower grades.

VariantHela · 22/11/2022 22:14

Absolutely nothing

greeandorange · 22/11/2022 22:21

I'd love too but can't afford it, the business is struggling all of our suppliers have increased costs and the cost of running a business has just shot up.

My staff are really well paid, and some are living at home and others are all ok, so I've said as swoon as we can get through this sticky patch I'll make it up.

Small business owner. We gave our staff a 10% pay rise in April, as they hadn't had one the year before. We won't be able to do anything like this for next April, as our outgoings are doubling at a rate of knots.

There's only so much you can pass onto customers before they start looking elsewhere.

berksandbeyond · 22/11/2022 23:05

Yes I am getting a one off cost of living bonus. It's roughly 2 weeks wages. Very nice as I wasn't expecting anything

Fizbosshoes · 22/11/2022 23:27

No but we had the heating on at work today for the first time and it was great! 🤣

Thriwit · 22/11/2022 23:29

We had an annual payrise of 4% in April, but that’s it. Private sector. They’ve just told us that in order to preserve £multimillion profits any more rises are unlikely for the foreseeable, due to the increase in energy costs.

willowstar · 22/11/2022 23:31

Gosh. I had no idea. I am NHS...no cost of living acknowledgment here!

MajorCarolDanvers · 22/11/2022 23:32

No pay rise and no cost of living payment. I work for a charity. Things are tough in the the third sector.

DelurkingAJ · 22/11/2022 23:38

Free lunch for three months, living wage (least we pay to anyone) up now rather than in the annual cycle and everyone on under £50k got a one-off payment (I think £1k). I’m a big fan of my employer. Financial services with call centre staff on living wage.

FrangipaniBlue · 22/11/2022 23:45

Our bonus is usually paid in June based on March year end results. Some of the targets on which bonus is based have already been met so there are "discussions" about paying part of the bonus in December.

Not confirmed yet though!

IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble · 23/11/2022 00:49

Full time job is public sector, so no payrise/allowance/bonus. (We would never get Xmas bonuses).

Part time job is NMW so I guess I had a pay rise in April when NMW went up.

My OH is public sector too, so no extra money for him either.

However, we are terribly spoiled as we are both allowed to work as much unpaid overtime as we like!😂

bluetongue · 23/11/2022 01:31

I wish.

1.5% public sector per annum pay rise for me. I’m in Australia, not the UK so inflation isn’t as bad but still not great.

I’m trying to get a higher paying job but keep coming second. Sob.

StarcourtMall · 23/11/2022 07:01

I work for a charity. Everyone who earns under £34k gets a £300 COL payment. I earn more than that so I won’t get it.

DomesticShortHair · 23/11/2022 07:06

No, and no pay rise/annual review either.

FindingMeno · 23/11/2022 07:15

I will get the NMW increase in April.
Whoopee.

poshme · 23/11/2022 07:25

Public sector so no. No COL money.

Hoping for a 2% pay rise in April.

CeeJay81 · 23/11/2022 07:26

Already announced £150 on our store card across 3 months, they are now giving us an extra £75 on it just before Christmas. This winter they have upped own brand discount to 30%. We shall see what are pay rise is in April with minimum wage rise.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 23/11/2022 07:28

No!

MuggleMe · 23/11/2022 08:27

Local council. No COL payment but a fund you can apply for if you're struggling.

maybe for others, but we are not included in this. As I said it has not been decided yet.

I sit on 3 boards in a non exec capacity, and 2 of the three have given every permanent member of staff on payroll £1,000. One paid the whole thing in this months payroll, and the other £500 in October and £500 will be paid in December. You’d think everyone would be grateful, but some complained to HR that it resulted in a loss of tax credits and so they should have more. You honestly couldn’t make it up!

This is a very real thing though. At my husbands work (global company) all employees recieved a COL payment of £1000 . This was very gererous and extremely welcome and everyone was very greatful. My husband did say though that some of his workmates are also entitled to universal credit for whatever reason and whilst they were very greatful for the generosity they ended up with nothing,One man according to my dh said he had paid tax on the extra payment, then universal credit took it as extra earnings and stopped his entitement for that month and took the extra money too as it took him over the limit of what he was entitled to ( forgive me I really dont understand the universal credit system) and it ended up for that month for him and his family due to the COL payment of £1000 he ended up £139.00 worse off than if he had had nothing at all. A few others said the same too, I think as it was treated as earnings it had a detremental affect on some employees, We were ok as it didnt affecrt us as we dont claim any of the things some of the others do and we were really appreciative of the support the company offered us,they didnt have to do anything but they did and it was a lovely thing in my view for them to do.

Maybe I don’t fully understand tax credits, but I thought that they were not withdrawn on a £ for £1 basis, so while those in receipt of the Cost of Living Bonus won’t necessarily see the full benefit, they won’t be worse off than if they hadn’t had the bonus?

barneshome · 24/11/2022 10:22

No - companies profits are also impacted by increases in gas electric interest rates council tax
There is a recession coming people will be lucky not to lose a job soon

doggiedazy · 24/11/2022 10:25

No extra here.
I have 2 employers and I freelance for one on-top of my salaried role. Both gave me small increases last year, but nothing compared to inflation.

They have been passing more work to me so I can increase my hours and therefore how much I invoice, which I'm happy about because I get paid a very fair amount for my skill level (not that high in this area as this is a career move).

I'm dealing with the COL by having no social life and topping up with de-cluttering selling on eBay/marketplace.
