1 day in Liverpool - what to do?

Travelling to Liverpool next weekend to visit a Uni with DD. The Sunday will mostly be the longest train journey known to man & Uni visit.
On the Monday we have most of the day to get a feel for the city (never been before - DD wants to get an idea of what it’s like to live there)
what should we do? Areas to visit/avoid? The only thing we know is we don’t want to do a Beatles tour!
Things she likes are art galleries, independent/vintagey shops, record shops & nightlife!
I know it’s not long enough to get to know a place but she just wants to get a feel for it

The Albert dock, Walker Art gallery and the Liverpool museum and the Pier head. You can get open top bus tours around the city and also the Anglican cathedral is worth a look.

nancy75 · 21/11/2022 21:27

The uni is right by the cathedral & that’s the area she would be living in. I think it’s raining all day so it might be downstairs on the open top bus!
How big is the main bit of the city? Is it all walkable (I’m from London so often find it hard to gauge how big/small places are going to be)

The Turner Prize exhibition is on at The Tate but I really wouldn't bother viewing it- I was completely underwhelmed!
The Walker Art Gallery is right by the train station and the Christmas markets.

Timperleybell · 21/11/2022 21:34

Its a longish but doable walk from the University to Albert Dock which traverses the main part of the city centre. The main shopping street and Liverpool 1 development. Maybe not too much fun in the rain it was lashing down the last time i visited a couple of weeks ago.

Candleabra · 21/11/2022 21:35

There’s a JMW Turner exhibition on at the Tate at the moment (v good), it’s a tenner, the rest of the museum is free. Highly recommend the museum of Liverpool (also on the waterfront)

savvy7 · 21/11/2022 21:36

I like the Bluecoats Gallery

Catsonskis · 21/11/2022 21:36

which cathedral Op there’s 2? I presume the Catholic one, that’s where UOL is based any way. Have a look round the cathedral, it’s really unusual, then go down Hope street and head towards Bold Street, loads of cool shops restaurants and bars there, all independent pretty much. Seal street is parallel to there with bars and clubs. Head towards Liverpool one then and wander around the shops, then cross over and walk around the Albert Docks for more shops and restaurants, the museum of Liverpool as well as slavery and Mara time museum (both excellent) and the Walker art gallery, have lunch in Cains Brewery or Duke Street Market, head over to the castle street area for more food/bars/nightlife too.
from there you could continue up the hill towards the Museums, Liverpool world museum is a bit tired but big and next to the Walker Art Gallery which is great.

QueenOfHiraeth · 21/11/2022 21:37

Liverpool is quite compact. I'd second the tourist bus or there are some good walking tours. I think there may be a downloadable walking route online so you could wander at your leisure

Restlessinthenorth · 21/11/2022 21:38

Bold St is great for a walk. Lots of indie places and a real student vibe. The Baltic market is also a great place to eat. Loads of nightlife round there but open with a different vibe on a wet Monday afternoon

I like the Bluecoats Gallery

Oh yes good shout. Gorgeous building, Lovely jewellery shops and a cracking second hand bookshop.

nancy75 · 21/11/2022 21:41

All great suggestions, I’ll make a list me see where things are on a map (god help us, I’m useless with maps!)
We are staying quite near Liverpool 1 (is that a shopping centre?) the Uni is LIPA & yes i think it’s near the Catholic cathedral

Bundobust on Bold Street for fantastic veggie food or Maray on docks or bold street. Also love the Bluecoat and the cafe there. Walker Gallery fab and next door to we world museum which has a bit of everything (mummies, aquarium and planetarium!)
If you do shop etc at Liverpool one, there's a lovely cafe Mersey Made, behind John Lewis - sells lots of crafts and has workshops etc

Glumbums · 21/11/2022 21:42

Go to the top of the radio tower. Great view of the city from there.

Lj8893 · 21/11/2022 21:43

The world museum is great.
The Cat cafe is lovely (if you like cats)
Liverpool 1 good for high street shopping.
Baltic triangle is quirky and nice for a wander
Albert Docks is lovely and interesting

BunnyNumNum · 21/11/2022 21:46

another vote for Bold Street and the Bluecoat, if you want to get a feel for the more quirky side.

nancy75 · 21/11/2022 21:48

Thank you for all the ideas, it’s a shame we’re not going for longer! I’m going to show this to DD and she can choose what she wants to see most.
Now more importantly - best Sunday Roast in Liverpool? If I’m spending a million hours on a train I deserve a nice dinner!

Go to Probe Records, best shop on earth, it's tucked away round the corner from Primark

Toddlerteaplease · 21/11/2022 21:49

The Metropolitan Cathedral is beautiful inside, they have an exhibition in the (ginormous crypt) then Pancakes in Moose coffee on Hope street. I'm in Liverpool this weekend but have done it all so will follow for tips!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/11/2022 21:50

There is a jewellery exhibition on at the lady Lever gallery. Gorgeous diamond but not worth a special trip.

I spent all my diamond money on the train tickets!

Have a fab time. I love Liverpool. Would love their in a heartbeat if it wasn't for work!

Soozikinzii · 21/11/2022 22:04

Baltic social does a good roast . Big bowl noodle is good for Chinese food .

90yomakeuproom · 21/11/2022 22:04

Bold street and Matthews Street for me! There's a good atmosphere but I'd say a Monday is probably the worst day 😔

mackthepony · 21/11/2022 22:05

Walker art gallery and the Anglican cathedral are must sees

I went to Liverpool uni and loved it. Lived on the Smithdown Road area
