1 day in Liverpool - what to do?

Travelling to Liverpool next weekend to visit a Uni with DD. The Sunday will mostly be the longest train journey known to man & Uni visit.
On the Monday we have most of the day to get a feel for the city (never been before - DD wants to get an idea of what it’s like to live there)
what should we do? Areas to visit/avoid? The only thing we know is we don’t want to do a Beatles tour!
Things she likes are art galleries, independent/vintagey shops, record shops & nightlife!
I know it’s not long enough to get to know a place but she just wants to get a feel for it

Also don't be surprised when people with carrier bags full of stolen make up or perfume approach you. That's just Liverpool 🤣

Bold street and Matthews Street for me! There's a good atmosphere but I'd say a Monday is probably the worst day 😔

We know there won’t be much going on during the day in a Monday but I just want her to see there is stuff to do.
we’ve seen a couple of unis in small places & for a kid from London a really small town/city is a bit of a culture shock! I know Liverpool is a really lively place & I think she’d love it - just want to make sure we see enough for her to get a good idea of what it’s like

I’m from Liverpool and have never had this happen to me OP.

oxfam bold street, egg cafe, if you’ve got time hope on the train to st michaels from Liverpool central (about 10 mins) and go up lark lane and Sefton park.

I live in Liverpool too and have also never had this happen to me. And I also work in town.
Op- bold street sounds like a good place to wander down for your dd. And I second the Albert dock and the World museum. (There's a pick up phone in there on the exhibit about the overhead railway and it's my grandads story - so I'm a bit biased ha)

HereBeFuckery · 21/11/2022 22:16

Go for a drink/something to eat in the Pen Factory. It's quite studenty (though not cheap), you might get chatting to a student or two. Best city in the world to be a student, I adored it. Would move back in a heartbeat.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/11/2022 22:29

I've also never had anything dodgy happen there either. The people are lovely.

Ive never seen this happen in the city centre in over 40 years.

bottleofbeer · 21/11/2022 22:51

Liverpool really isn't very big. You can do loads in a day

Addicted2Sugar · 21/11/2022 23:01

I also work in Lpool and never had this happen to me!
Bold Street is brilliant for restaurants that can be different from the norm. If you don't have a Mowgli in your town do try it (Bold St or Water St).
Liverpool One is the shopping area (and cinema and restaurants).
LIPA is by the Anglican Cathedral, as previously said there's 2 and both are beautiful.
Lastly congratulations to your daughter on LIPA, an amazing institution.

AliMonkey · 21/11/2022 23:03

If not doing it as part of the open day, take a bus up Smithdown Road, have a look at the uni accommodation there the wander round Sefton Park - good to see the accommodation that's further away from the uni, realise how easy and frequent the buses are and that there's big chunks of greenery in the city if you go to the right places. (Even the cemetery on Smithdown Road can be interesting!)

And when you come out of Lime St station, make sure you head down to St George's Hall for a few moments, it's just a lovely bit of architecture round there and not what most people think about as what Liverpool is like.

But for me, my favourite bit of Liverpool is always the river. Just spend time on the waterfront - at least the Pier Head, Albert Dock, Maritime Museum, Titanic Memorial but if I had time, I'd walk from say Princes Dock to Brunswick Dock, keeping to the waterfront as much as you can (there's a couple of places where you have to no slightly away from the river). In fact I'm up there next week and intend to do exactly that!

bravotango · 21/11/2022 23:07

Take a cab from the station up to LIPA and then walk down the hill to Bold street, you could also try food at Duke at market. Second pp suggestion of the bluecoat. Up near LIPA on hope Street the pen Factory does nice food. Will she definitely be living in the Georgian Quarter? Lots of students live down around Smithdown near to Sefton Park - you could go to Lark Lane for food and a wander instead?

JustPickleRick · 21/11/2022 23:09

Reading this thread makes my heart ache 😩 I'm from the wirral but now live down south for work. I miss Liverpool so much. I'm so glad I got to grow up there and experience the best nights out, the amazing shopping...there's nowhere quite like it. I love and miss it so much. Your daughter will fall in love with it just like everyone else seems to ❤

nancy75 · 21/11/2022 23:12

For the first year the halls LIPA suggest are near the cathedral - I think it’s where most of their students live ( it’s called cathedral Campus so I assume it’s near by) it’s the closet one to the Uni & as she’ll be totally new to the city probably the best choice at first (so she’s not constantly lost!)

The uni is right by the cathedral & that’s the area she would be living in. I think it’s raining all day so it might be downstairs on the open top bus!
How big is the main bit of the city? Is it all walkable (I’m from London so often find it hard to gauge how big/small places are going to be)

Yes its all walkable.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2022 20:29

LIPA has accommodation across the car park from
The cathedral. Might be a bit noisy on a Sunday!

Oooheeer · 22/11/2022 22:14

You don’t need a taxi from lime street to LIPA! It’s like a 15 minute walk, and you can pass up bold street, see the bombed out church and really get a feel for the studenty vibe. You defo don’t need taxis in the city centre it’s tiny!

JanetandJohn500 · 22/11/2022 22:22

Bring your driving licences, download the Voi app and hire the electric scooters (pay by the minute). They'll get you up the hill from Lime Street to LIPA

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 22/11/2022 22:50

She’s going to LIPA and no one’s mentioned the Everyman and Playhouse theatres??? Grin

Clearly you’ll be on Hope Street anyway - don’t know if you’ll be able to book anything for the time you’re there. The Everyman is ferociously amazing - any performing arts student would be lucky to have it on their doorstep. She should also check out the very cool, tiny and impressive Unity Theatre tucked away on (strangely breathtaking) Hope Place behind Hope St Hotel (😍).

If you were going to be in Liverpool this coming Saturday you could have seen a new opera at the Tung Auditorium - part of the University of Liverpool. (I may be going myself - though it means missing the artist’s talk with Ingrid Pollard at the Tate.)

Magnificent city!

There is more chance of me growing wings and learning to fly than of me getting on an E scooter 😂

I did consider trying to book something for the Sunday night but the train journey has turned out to be such an epic nightmare I think we'll all be falling asleep by 7pm!

Hi OP , not understanding why your journey is taking so long…. It’s normally 2 hours and a few minutes from Euston to Liverpool but maybe maintenance work gets done on Sundays. Anyway I suggest a trip up the Royal Liver Building if you have time. It’s really worth doing and because it’s at the Pier Head, you can do the Albert Dock also. Hope you and your daughter have a lovely time. 😊

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2022 14:38

The view from the Liver building is great. But it as a rip off for the tour when I did it. Do the cathedral tower instead if you want a view!

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 23/11/2022 14:45

Moose coffee for a nice breakfast/brunch. Yum. Their pancakes are awesome. Can't recommend anywhere for a Sunday roast, but the food at the Lebanese place in Bold St is delicious and great value.

QuicheandMustard · 23/11/2022 15:02

You can walk quite easily from the Anglican cathedral into the city but like PPs have said, Albert Dock is probably a good shout on a rainy day. There's a couple of museums, gift shops and lots of restaurants/coffee shops to shelter from the rain. In the early days of This Morning (Richard and Judy), the TV studios were there, looking out onto the giant weather map in the water.

Princecharlesfirstwife · 23/11/2022 15:32

My DD’s in her 1st year at LIPA 6th form and loving every second. For food I’d highly recommend Duke St Market.
