Films you see differently as an adult...

I presume this has been done before but fuck it, it's Saturday night and I'm bored. So I'll start...

Mrs Doubtfire. As a child I saw Miranda as a boring, stuck up cow. As an adult I see her as a successful, independent woman exasperated with her man child husband who gives me The Ultimate Ick. And then some. I'm gobsmacked she ever married him. Stuart was a capable, equal partner not the villain I once thought him to be. Anyone else?

The bit that gets me now is her Dad having to give Penny an abortion. He literally broke the law for them and could have lost his medical licence.

Her dad didn't do the abortion, he helped her after a botched back-street abortion.

Big
Grease
Home Alone

Big is horrible!

Talk about inappropriate sexual behaviour towards a child - it was creepy as hell.

I think Laura's husband knew what she was up to in Brief Encounter. He worked in the town, he would have had things reported back to him or failing that, just the change in her demeanour might have had him follow her one day out of curiosity. The then chose patience and kindness because he loved her so much and understood what she was going through. He was the real hero in the film.

So she's an innocent teen girl and he's much older and sexually experienced then

they are both legal consenting adults. He was 24/25, hardly 50. I don't think that's a bad age gap in fairness.

He was still a sleazy predator taking advantage of a sexually inexperienced girl (only just) young woman.

Trianglesquarerectangle · 20/11/2022 21:08

Mamma Mia. So she doesn’t know who her father is cos her mum was with three blokes at the same time and invited them all to her wedding with the hope of finding out. Marvellous.

I think that's pretty sexist. Who took advantage of who? She was the persistent one who took advantage of him. It's only because his age that he is called a 'sleazy predator', if she was the older one, you wouldn't be saying that. She was the driver in the relationship, not him.

Yes I never understood the dislike of the baroness in The Sound of Music. She was a single woman who was hoping to marry a single man 🤷‍♀️

But she knew what she was doing when she saw Maria stare at him when he was playing Eidelweiss. And telling her to come to the ball and she would help her choose a dress.

Dirty Dancing. Then: Watched it dozens of times as a teenager, loved it, wanted to be her.

Now: I see an underage innocent teen girl groomed by a much older and sexually experienced teacher. And her parents end up supporting the relationship because they did a nice dance at the end?

If this was at a (dance) school in the UK today, he'd be fired.

He was fired.

Are you pro-life or something? Women have always had to have abortions and, prior to legalisation, unfortunately they had to have back street abortions, which made them super vulnerable to charlatans.

The point here is that Baby isn’t a random silly teen, her father totally trusts her as she’s always been 100% reliable, so he doesn’t question she’s telling the truth.

Later she says, ”I’m sorry I lied. But you lied to me too. You said everyone was alike and deserved a break, but you just meant people who were like you”.

How does this equate to PP being pro-life exactly?!
Though she had no choice Penny went to an illegal travelling abortionist. Baby helped facilitate it by persuading her father to stump up the cash. He just took her word for it not being illegal. Which it was. It almost killed Penny and the guy didn't hang around to make sure she was OK did he.

Annie. Middle aged billionaire bachelor who's never married is allowed to adopt an orphan girl with no questions asked.

Even just taking her home for a week is questionable.

LoveShitJokes · 20/11/2022 21:14

There was one film I watched a bit of years ago and I have no clue what it was called but it really creeped me out. It was basically a grown woman out on some "date" type thing with a child - male - who was some kind of whizz kid or wannabe businessman or something. All I remember is the two of them running around in a waterfall or something and it was all slow motion and fancy music in the background as if she was falling in love with him. I just remember thinking... what the actual fuck is this about?!

Dirty Dancing.
Grease.
Pretty Woman.

Yes, these and Housesitter, Overboard and - honestly I think I could go on and on about every film I ever watched!

ScribblingPixie · 20/11/2022 21:22

An Officer and a Gentleman: I don't agree actually. I think it's a very good, realistic depiction of what life is/was like for people in these communities. There's a difference between promoting a misogynistic message and exposing it.

I agree. I saw it recently and thought it still held up.

JudgeJ · 20/11/2022 21:29

Love this thread every time is comes up! Is there any film which suits the very high standards of MN which isn't utterly boring and tedious?
No-one had mentioned Romeo and Juliet with its under age relationships etc. and what about the Duchess of Malfi, such a violent blood fest!

FireCrotch · 20/11/2022 21:31

Am I pro-life or something? No love. I'm lucky enough to live in a country that let's a 14 year old girl who was made pregnant by an abusive "family friend" decide with non judgemental and expert help whether or not to continue a pregnancy.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

Heroine is a fascist sympathiser and the dashing "lovable rogue" art teacher is sleeping with one of his students who looks what - about 15? 😮

But … that’s the point of the book. She’s not supposed to be a heroine, it’s really clear that her idealism is very problematic and screws up her crème-de-La-crème pupils pretty badly, and the art teacher is definitely supposed to be a scum bag. The thrust of the book is about the girls realising that the adults they idealised are not great people.

Ooh forgot to say that I feel this way about Star Wars 1-3 after becoming a parent. Before that, I saw Anakin as a spoilt, ungrateful brat, who just wanted to inflict pain. I mean, I don’t agree with him slaughtering men, women and children, but I can see more now why he went that way…

Could never get past the fact he looked so young when he first met padmai and they ended up together. Massive ick

caroleanboneparte · 20/11/2022 21:41

Trading Places thought it was such a funny film as a young child.

But now I see it's got that 'happy prostitute' trope.

Trainspotting. She's still a school girl even if she is a feisty one.

CuppaAndABiccie · 20/11/2022 18:50

Completely agree! I loved the theme music (brass band, but just voices), and Geraldine James was perfect as Lady Maude. “Yes Blott - I’m telling you orph!”

The book is definitely a laugh-out-loud one too 😂

I watched as a teenager, but I’d watch it all over again now for sure - and hopefully it wouldn’t feel too dated 🤞

To me it felt of its time but it didn't feel like it had aged badly at all. All the characters are so absurd, even Lady Maud who we're all rooting for, that it's not as if anything frowned upon now is being upheld. And Blott is a very odd sort of hero given that he wrecks an entire village and causes death due to his devotion to Lady Maud. Definitely worth another watch.

That was my favourite bit when I watched that as a ten year old. That and Blott defeating the SAS from his gatehouse. And the absurd Mr Dundridge. In contrast, Giles Lynchwood tied to a bed and dressed as a baby made no impression on me at all.

(Blott also reminds me of the lead singer from Laibach 😂)

I must find the book.

Wait what? It isn’t already?

Saturday night fever . I d never seen it until last year as a musical at the theatre.
I came out and said wow:
gang rape of Angie which is brushed aside as she is friend zoned. Then Tony rapes Stephanie she runs away and at the end he comes to her door and she shrugs her shoulders and lets him in .

It is a me too movement, film would never get made now

The film is very gritty. It is supposed to be awful.

PatriciaPattersonGimlin · 20/11/2022 21:45

Blott On The Landscape was a masterpiece, both book and film.

The best Tom Sharpe was The Throwback. It had an English Bull Terrier in it though so it was bound to be good. : )

Because it’s a bizarre approach to abortion that you wouldn’t have one because it was illegal. Once upon a time all abortion was illegal and women still had to have them. If a friend of mine desperately needed one and I had the cash of course I’d pay for it.

The US will now create many, many more Pennys through its pro-life misogynist insanity.
