If you are single, do you sleep on one side of the bed?

This is really silly, but currently it's a thing.

I've been single about 8 years and since then have always just slept on 'my' side of the bed, the right side. It's a king size bed. It just doesn't feel right if I don't. All my things are on my side bedside table, charger, lamp, radio etc.

My bed is a pillow top type and every now and then I need to rotate it, as a dip starts to form where I lay.

I felt the dip again last week so rotated again, but the swapped rotated side is still dipped from the last rotatation. (I thought the pillow top would puff up if not used, but it seems it no longer is).

I woke up a few mornings with backache and got the dreaded realization that I probably need a new mattress. The thing is though, is that the middle part of the bed is perfectly fine and practically unslept on.

So this week I have moved... To the middle of the bed. But I am not sleeping well and it just feels all wrong. This morning I woke up in my usual spot in the dip on the right, I'd even moved my pillow over with me in the night.

I'm tired. I haven't slept well. But I absolutely cannot afford a new mattress now. But the middle of the bed is perfectly fine but it's giving me anxiety when I get into bed, as it's just not right.

I know this sounds quite ridiculous, my bedroom is my solace, my me space, and how silly is it that I'm getting anxious at night as I have to move over a less than a meter to try to sleep better.

Am I alone here?

Can be one side or the middle but never the other side. Not strictly on one side like there is an invisible line, I'd be cold close to the edge. Depends where the cats are as well.

TheZenOne22 · 19/11/2022 10:40

I tend to sleep on one side (the right) or in the middle but often wake up and I’m on the other side (that’s when I have restless nights sleep).

I now have an Emma mattress so am aware that I won’t be able to flip it like other mattresses so I may start to try sleep at the other side too.

Athenen0ctua · 19/11/2022 10:41

I rotate my mattress occasionally but haven't noticed a dip yet after 5 years. Though it's a basic sprung firm mattress.

Doppe · 19/11/2022 10:41

I still sleep on 'my' side of the bed even though it's over four years since my husband died - sleeping on 'his' side just wouldn't feel right!

bloodywhitecat · 19/11/2022 10:41

I still sleep on 'my' side, I cannot bring myself to sleep on DH's side even though he hasn't slept in the bed for a year now.

MightyAtlantic · 19/11/2022 10:43

I sleep right in the middle!

VioletCharlotte · 19/11/2022 10:45

Yeah, I tend to sleep on the right side because my window, lamp, clocks, etc is on that side. The dog sleeps on the left!

Highlighta · 19/11/2022 10:45

I am sorry Doppe.

Within the last few months I’ve trained myself to sleep in the middle and now really enjoy it.

Highlighta · 19/11/2022 10:48

I see I'm not too alone in this then.

I think I just need to get out of my comfort zone (literally) and come to terms with the fact that the middle it will have to be for now.

Which means I also have to find a new spot for all the pillows at night.....

I can't flip mine either, so now I'm wondering why pillow tops are so popular. As the life span seems much less than those you can rotate and flip. E

I have a preferred side where all my bedside bits are, but I flail so much in my sleep, I wake up starfish, middle, diagonal, other side...not upside down yet, but I'm sure it'll happen 😁

KangarooKenny · 19/11/2022 10:51

Me on one side, dog on the other. Bliss !

Do you have any tips for a grumpy untrained middle sleeper?

At home, I sleep on one side. At hotels, in the same size bed I sleep in the middle but I cannot do it at home no matter how hard I try

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 19/11/2022 11:07

I know you will loose the benifit of the special top, but if the current upper surface is uncomfortable, and you can't afford a new mattress, why can't you turn it over and sleep on the plain "bottom"?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 19/11/2022 11:10

I aim for almost diagonally - head in the middle, feet on 'my' side.

I think I would prefer a double to a king-size, however I love my actual bed base so don't want to change it. Actually I quite like the small double in my spare room but would need a better mattress.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 19/11/2022 11:12

I did for a year after I divorced but it was quite liberating to think the whole bed is mine. I move to whichever but is the best temperature

hollyjolls · 19/11/2022 11:14

I'm not single but DP works away 4 nights a week so I have the bed to myself. I sleep right in the middle spread out. We've been together 8 years and he's always worked away so got used to it and love having the bed to myself. I struggle when he gets home to be confined to one side and never sleep as well!

blackheartsgirl · 19/11/2022 11:18

I still sleep my side too, or the middle. Dh died july 21.|

Happyher · 19/11/2022 11:20

I did sleep on the same side for years after my husband left but after realising to mattress was comfier in the other side I switched and now quite like this side. However I’m refurbishing my bedroom and have thrown out the bed and mattress and now have a dilemma about which side to sleep when I get a new bed and mattress!

Changemaname1 · 19/11/2022 11:21

I haven't lived with a boyfriend in years now and always sleep at the right hand side would feel so weird any other way iv tried but no also need a new mattress due to the dreaded dip ha!

Highlighta · 20/11/2022 08:06

A morning update on my ridiculous situation :

I moved all the pillows right off the bed last night, as previously I had just shoved the unused left side ones over a bit.

I woke up quite refreshed naturally at 6am which makes me think I slept well. Typical that it's the only morning I could have a lie in though....

BUT, I was back in the dip on my right along with my pillow. Not sure when I travelled there but my back wasn't sore as if I'd been there all night.

So tonight I will put pillows between me and the dip, and see if that works.

I feel like a I'm undergoing toddler sleep training all over again 🙈

I am less grumpy today though, which helps everyone...

Strangely, when I was single "my side" was on the left. I was with DP for five years and changed to the right as he needed the left side. We split up a year ago and I still sleep on the right - I've tried moving to the left and the middle and it just feels strange.

Creativecake · 20/11/2022 08:21

If I could I’d sleep bang in the middle.
