Christmas Eve boxes

do you do Christmas Eve boxes? I’ve got a four year old boy and I was thinking of doing one for him. Put pyjamas, books, chocolate in it ,
but make an inexpensive one. i know some people don’t do them. I might not even get round to it 🙈

Most of MN hate Christmas Eve boxes! I do them, my kids are 14 & 8 now so they have changed a bit but they get pj's (not necessarily Christmas ones), chocolate, hot chocolate and some other random thing I can find! The 14 year old probably doesn't get anything else but the 8 year old will get a book or a Christmas craft thing. I like it and they look forward to it.

Pinkypong · 17/11/2022 22:36

Nope. Why do they need more stuff?
and why do I need more to think about?!
we have hot chocolate and enjoy each other’s company.

Pinkypong · 17/11/2022 22:37

But hey! Each to their own, it’s Christmas!

I do a joint one now for my two boys. New pjs, an Xmas movie, hot chocolate and a treat of some kind. Simple but my eldest loves it (youngest doesn't understand properly yet).

That’s still a nice thing to do, i just think it’s a nice surprise for kids. I can see why others don’t like the idea though as it’s potentially adding more pressure

Only start if you’re happy to do it year after year. They weren’t a thing when my two were little and I don’t see the point, except for maybe a nice book for bedtime .

Smarshian · 17/11/2022 22:45

I do. They love it.
ours contain a book (same books each year), pjs, hot choc, bath bomb and then a pillow case and pens. They decorate the pillow cases as their Santa sacks.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 17/11/2022 22:45

My DD gets a Christmas Eve box, we bought a beautiful wooden box when she was little. We do a little treasure hunt in the morning to find it. It has a new pair of pyjamas to wear that night (not actual Christmas ones, so she can wear them all year), chocolate money, maybe a book to start at bedtime, maybe an activity/sticker book if we are going out for lunch that day, bath bomb for her Christmas Eve bath. Basically some nice little treats for the actual day itself.

AlwaysLatte · 17/11/2022 22:51

We've always done them. Usually pyjamas (eg red tartan that's not too 'Christmassy' so they can wear through the winter), a DVD (or 'voucher' for a prime download), book, hot chocolate/marshmallows/stirring stick and bath bomb. Also a tree decoration for their own bedroom trees connected to their personal interests. It's a bit of fun. Ok to not do if you don't want to!

Loachworks · 17/11/2022 22:54

I've done one since DC1's first Christmas, he's now 27 and no longer lives at home. We go out for a meal fairly early then home to a wrapped gift of new pyjamas, a good hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream and lots of snacks. We then sit and watch a cheesy Christmas films. My youngest is sixteen now and I still do it for the two I have at home.

Teapleasebobb · 17/11/2022 22:55

We do similar but actually put them out on 1st December and not on Christmas Eve.
We put out their advent calendars and a Christmas bundle, such as Christmas PJs, Christmas chocs, usually some festive bath bombs etc. This way they can wear their Christmas PJs for the Christmas lead up so get more wear out of them!

Proamble · 17/11/2022 22:57

Yes, we do one every day for the advent period.

ToastAndJames · 17/11/2022 22:58

I love this idea. I’d never heard of it when my children were small and it seems a bit late to start now they’re late teens.

As well as being sweet, I imagine it’s a good way to manage Christmas Eve excitement and going to bed- bath bomb for their bath, new pjs etc- to make that transition part of the fun.

EmmiJay · 17/11/2022 23:00

My DD will get a kinder surprise in the tesco whilst I scramble about for last minute nibbles on christmas eve. Yes, she'll get the new pj's but thats it! If you have the time, energy and whatnot to do a box then do it I say☺️

It's never too late, dd is 17 and she loves her Christmas bundle, she gets more excited about it than the 10 year old!

MonkeyPuddle · 17/11/2022 23:14

We don’t have a box. But the children know that if they are super well behaved on Xmas Eve even things are VERY EXCITING they get to open two (pre chosen by me) presents. These are always a new book and new pj’s. And we will read that book in their pj’s drinking a hot chocolate with an obscene amount of squirty cream on top. Probably sprinkles too.

I couldn’t give a sideways fuck if people think ya shit, my mum used to do the same with me in the 80’s so it’s not exactly new.

I’m working Christmas Day night shift so I will cram as much joy, love, laughter, silliness, hugs, daft dancing, cheese, family, cuddles, excitement and just plain fun into those hours before I go out to work.

What? A whole box every day?

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 17/11/2022 23:16

Pjs £10
Hot choc sachet 50p
Treat £1/£2
Xmas coloring or sticker book. £1
Reindeer food, make
Something like a paint your own Xmas suncatcher £3 ish

Personalised xmas mug £10 which goes in each year as does Santas plate £2 and milk glass £1, few xmas books. All used each year

Years ago eldest had a dvd but now we just watch Netflix etc.

This year I have got 2 new xmas stories too

BooksAndHooks · 17/11/2022 23:18

We have a handmade wooden sleigh my husband made, on Christmas Eve it comes out with sweets in.

We also have a Christmas Eve box that has our Christmas Eve plate for the mince pies, the Santa key, hessian bags for reindeer dust (we just use bird food with the coloured suet bits in), our Christmas candle, puzzle and the snowman DVD we watch every year. There’s nothing new in there.

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 17/11/2022 23:19

For teens that don't want a coloring book. Tesco etc do the little quiz box games for about £3 like football quiz, music, general, or silly thing. I get eldest these and we do them when younger ones are in bed.

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2022 23:20

Do you buy different hot chocolate for 24/12? That’s an all year round thing.

Proamble · 18/11/2022 00:29

SNWannabe · 17/11/2022 23:15

What? A whole box every day?

No, it’s just a message behind a card, or sometimes a treat.

WishIhadacrystalball · 18/11/2022 00:59

I do one with my dd and she loves it. This year we have pjs, Santa face masks, reindeer foot masks, a Christmassy hair towel so we can have a wee pamper and wash her hair for Christmas Day as she normally likes curls for special occasions!
I also have some sweets and a wee one of those Christmas box baking kits from b and m.
