Christmas Eve boxes

do you do Christmas Eve boxes? I’ve got a four year old boy and I was thinking of doing one for him. Put pyjamas, books, chocolate in it ,
but make an inexpensive one. i know some people don’t do them. I might not even get round to it 🙈

My DD gets a Christmas Eve box, we bought a beautiful wooden box when she was little. We do a little treasure hunt in the morning to find it. It has a new pair of pyjamas to wear that night (not actual Christmas ones, so she can wear them all year), chocolate money, maybe a book to start at bedtime, maybe an activity/sticker book if we are going out for lunch that day, bath bomb for her Christmas Eve bath. Basically some nice little treats for the actual day itself.

love this! ❤️

I don't have a special box that I produce on a certain day, but I do have a collection of festive books (picture books and adult books) that I bring out sometime after Halloween and I usually buy at least one new one a year.

I used to have CDs and DVDs to bring out, but it's all online now, so I just start to play the music on Alexa or suggest watching a Christmassy movie.

There are Santa hats and reindeer ears and a nativity set that come out each year and get played with.

I usually buy the kids at least one festive item of clothing. Could be pyjamas, but only if they actually need them, or a t-shirt, or whatever. I will also buy some kind of stickers or craft thing.

Then there are the house decorations, towels, cushions, linen etc and the tree itself.

On 1 Dec they'll get a new advent calendar, but we're into all the other stuff I've mentioned already. I love Christmas so I like a long slow build up all through November as well!

Mine has new pj's in and a box of chocolates to have whilst we watch a film, it's a simple way to get them ready for bed

I'll never understand the MN thing for hot chocolate as a treat!

@SnotRag22 RIP Christmas pyjamas grandma.

Good to know that I’ll be purchasing Christmas Eve pyjamas from now until my death.

This warning should be pinned to all Christmas Eve Box threads from now on.

A stark warning to all to who dare buy new nightwear with festive intentions 😂

AllFadestoBlack · 18/11/2022 11:29

I didn't see the point before though I've always had new PJs on Christmas Eve. Now my eldest is aware of Christmas, it's a nice way to present the new pyjamas and I put in a sweet treat, a bath bomb, the night before Christmas book, the plate for Santa's mince pie and a decoration for the tree.

I bought this year's pyjamas in the next sale after last Christmas so not expensive at all.

This year I'm also doing a little package on 1sr December with a Peppa advent calendar, Christmas stickers and a colouring book, a Christmas jumper and matching reindeer hats for big sister and baby. All things they'd get throughout the month but seems more special to give as a package. Again not expensive as items from The Works and Primark. I previously said I'd never do this 😂

I don't do elf on the shelf though. Pick what makes you/your kids happy and what you can be bothered with.

caroleanboneparte · 18/11/2022 12:06

They get pjs books and chocs at Xmas anyway so giving them these on Xmas eve rather than Xmas day makes no difference to me.

Snowpaw · 18/11/2022 13:01

I won’t do a box. I will make popcorn from scratch with my 4 yr old DD and we might watch polar express in the day time of Christmas Eve. The rest of my Christmas Eve plans involve a lot of outdoor running about to tire her out so she sleeps well that night and is easy to put to bed!

daffodilandtulip · 18/11/2022 13:10

I do. I'd have happily stopped a few years ago but the teenagers insist it's a tradition now 🤣. Just pjs, a book, hot choc, a simple card game for us all to play...same every year, but "you haaavvvee to!"

FrancescaContini · 18/11/2022 13:11

Is this just more shit going into landfill?

Nor me. Or pyjamas.

Bestcatmum · 18/11/2022 13:17

Yet more crap when Christmas is already an overindulgent festival of greed.
I hate it all, xmas has been ruined for me by the blatant advertising from October onwards, people feeling pressured to buy things they can't afford and ruining their finances to do so and feeling dead and regretful all of the new year.
I have zero time for it all.

I've done one this year in mine I have put:
Pjs
Xmas cookie
Chocolate spouts
Book for 8 year old ( would u rather Xmas edition )
Activity Xmas book for the 6 year old
Fluffy socks
A yoyo 😂
A personalised stocking to hang up in the evening
A bath bomb

Natfrances · 18/11/2022 13:39

Oh and a card game each

ArcheryAnnie · 18/11/2022 13:40

Smarshian · 17/11/2022 22:45

I do. They love it.
ours contain a book (same books each year), pjs, hot choc, bath bomb and then a pillow case and pens. They decorate the pillow cases as their Santa sacks.

If they decorate a pillowcase every year, what do you do with the previous year's pillow cases?

Whiskers4 · 18/11/2022 08:54

Never heard of them until I read about on MN a few years back. Fair enough if you can afford of DC not likely to get presents from elsewhere, but most receive a good amount of presents anyway .

We used to take DD into town before Xmas and give her a budget to buy a gift for a child in homeless family. Also, a pound in a charity box to write a positive message on put it on xmas tree in shopping arcade. She used to enjoy doing this and it's something really positive to think about others who don't have the extravagance of Xmas.

This is a lovely idea - giving a kid a budget in the supermarket to buy a few christmassy things to put in the foodbank basket at the door might work, too.

jojogoesbust · 18/11/2022 14:14

We didnt' have Christmas eve boxes when i was growing up, but we always got to open a present before bath on Christmas eve, it was always pjs and slippers. I have carried this on with my kids, they are 12 and 18 but they get a bag with new pjs, cosy socks and chocolate. When they were smaller, it would be something creative too like coluring book etc. They love it. I think Christmas eve is my favourite day

I also really want to get a present for a child who may not get anything, get my son to pick something

I imagine if you drew a Venn diagram, the crossover between "christmas eve box" people and "snuggling on the sofa with blankies, hot choccy and the famalam #blessed" people would be rather large.

😂

I want to know how people get time to sit on the sofa on Christmas Eve I always seem to be running around like a blue assed fly.

YukoandHiro · 19/11/2022 07:58

I only started last year but I like it. For me the purpose is to give them something to do on Xmas eve afternoon so I get a break.

I do:
PJs
Xmas craft/colouring
Marshmallows or chocolate

That's it!

YukoandHiro · 19/11/2022 07:59

Oh and an Xmas book to read too

YukoandHiro · 19/11/2022 08:02

@FloorCushion tbh I totally get that. It's the little things that make a family Xmas when you're a child.

Figgygal · 19/11/2022 08:06

Mine get new non xmas pjs on xmas eve and choc coins for watching muppets xmas Carol. We now have a percy pig box they get them in it was a fiver from m&s a few years back so I guess we do now do it but the tradition predated the box.
