Don't ever buy a BMW

Just that really.

Taking my car in for a software update (recall) that was rebooked 3 weeks ago when they cancelled on the day. No option of courtesy car. Bookedit 9am this morning as asked , staying onsite as no option to do 40 minute journey home and I'm still here. It's not gone on the ramp yet.

No updates, no apology, just being patronised.

This isn't the first time.

Third recall.

So please consider this, along with trust pilot before you purchase one, and pity us that did buy one.

Had mine for 11 years (it is now 15 years old) and infinitely more reliable than our 12 year old skoda which we have had for 9 years.

We could afford to replace but cannot see the point as it is so reliable.

Your problem is with the garage, not the car.

Get a Jag. Buy British-made.

Get a Jag. Buy British-made.

Or a Toyota - our hybrid was made in the U.K. and has a 10 year warranty.

DH read recently that BMWs are now designed such that they should be ok for 3 years but then liable to have parts fail, they make a lot of their profit from this.

I loved my old Toyota. Will be buying one again and using the difference for a deposit on a rental property

I have a Mini, same company and no issues at all.

ImAvingOops · 17/11/2022 15:33

DH had a BMW, loads of issues with it. Thankfully it was a work car and not paid for by us.

Are they really? Might have a look. I'll be on the market for a new car soon, this one's 7 years old but I really don't deserve anything too nice as it's usually full of mud, crisp packets. It's the family donkey.

i love my toyota too; totally reliable; is now 15 years old and i am getting a new one- only because i want a hybrid (and a dab radio).

megacat · 17/11/2022 15:39

The problem is with that branch not BMW. Did you book it as a waiting appointment?

declutteringmymind · 17/11/2022 15:41

Nope. The other branch were worse.

Don't get a Jag unless you keep it in a garage as they turn to rust. Ours was great - powerful smooth, and reliable until it suddenly seized up from extensive rust we hadn't seen.

Recalls aren't obligatory. I had two recalls on my car and have steadfastly ignored the third as the first two caused problems.

declutteringmymind · 17/11/2022 15:48

This one is causing problems, plus it won't pass the MOT with an engine light on.

But then (this might out me) my MOT garage owner walks his emu in public everyday.

Mine is 5yo. Just had a recall. It was done with in a morning though they did warn me it might have to stay in overnight if the update took longer.

I have had nothing but good service from Williams BMW. The staff are nice and not snooty which is good as i am not a purchaser of a new ££££ BMW every year. I'm more practical with my money.

I live near a Williams so it's easy for me. My dad's Mercedes garage is an hours drive but he's retired so it doesn't matter. I suppose if convenience is important you need to think about maintenance in the future because courtesy cars are much less common. I used to have a VW and a Ford and both of those required months' notice for a courtesy car appointment. It wasn't practical.

My main criticism of BMW is the brass neck charges for simple updates or cheap fixes. I've always gone to another garage if I can as BMW know how to charge.

Emmamoo89 · 17/11/2022 15:49

My parents have BMW and had no issues with it. Must just be yours

Aren't they mainly made of aluminum? Doesn't rust!

I know, the engine...

Not sure, maybe depends on the model. Our garage man said ours was essentially a ford Mondeo with a makeover!
Perhaps they've improved since then.

adiosamigoo · 17/11/2022 16:01

I had one, had loads of issues. But I’ve had other makes of cars that had issues too. I would buy one again

AtomicRitual · 17/11/2022 16:02

Mine has to go in for the same recall. I called up my local dealer in early October and told them I needed a courtesy car. The earliest time they had for me was mid-January!

The lady I spoke to said this recall is making them really busy as it affects so many cars.

That said, this is the second recall my car has had and I had a fault under warranty that they sorted for me and they've been really good with courtesy cars, etc, including hiring me a car for a week when it had its fault, as they didn't have enough courtesy cars.

My local dealership hasn't got the best reputation locally but they've always been very good to me (even though I now take it elsewhere for servicing and MOTs now it's out of warranty!).

barskits · 17/11/2022 16:18

I bet they wouldn't make a big burly managing-director-looking type bloke hang around for hours waiting, would they? Some garages are truly terrible for treating their female customers like this.

gogohmm · 17/11/2022 16:49

Dp's 5 year old BMW's engine blew up, it was out of warranty Confused before I met him but he's still aggrieved.

My advice, by Japanese

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/11/2022 17:00

Ah @LowbrowVictoriana now I understand and will be incredibly boring... Ford used to own Jaguar and yes they were overpriced Mondeos. Now they are owned by Tata Steel who are an Indian company, badge is Jaguar Landrover. Completely different vehicles!

Have you nodded off yet?

DrMarciaFieldstone · 17/11/2022 17:02

Audi service is even worse

Buzzinwithbez · 17/11/2022 17:03

I reckon they're all as bad as each other I've not had good experiences for either cars that I bought direct from main dealerships.
Even getting someone to sell me a VW was a diabolical experience.
The Honda dealership had me stressed to the eyeballs trying to upsell when I took it for its first free service and I've never used it again.

My husband bought his car second hand from a small dealership and had brilliant after sales care.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/11/2022 17:04

I found BMW sales very sexist. Kept talking to DH even when he said, "there's not point looking at me mate, I don't know anything about cars and Terry will be making all the decisions".

Though having read all the comments, maybe it was because he was a man.
