Don't ever buy a BMW

Just that really.

Taking my car in for a software update (recall) that was rebooked 3 weeks ago when they cancelled on the day. No option of courtesy car. Bookedit 9am this morning as asked , staying onsite as no option to do 40 minute journey home and I'm still here. It's not gone on the ramp yet.

No updates, no apology, just being patronised.

This isn't the first time.

Third recall.

So please consider this, along with trust pilot before you purchase one, and pity us that did buy one.

Almost bought a BMW. Almost bought an Audi. In the end went for a Honda and I’m very glad I did. Boring but dependable.

LowbrowVictoriana · 17/11/2022 17:11

Not at all @MrsTerryPratchett , we'll be in the market for a new (to us) car soon, so it's good to know these things!
Our aforementioned garage man was lamenting how all cars are crap these days and don't last. He recommended we didn't trade in our Vauxhall because that was actually pretty solid despite being old and high mileage, and worth more than its value.

No idea what to get next!

Get a Jag. Buy British-made.

Agreed, no issues whatsoever

Ah, but Honda aren't what they used to be either. My DPs used to swear by the Jazz, but their second one was crap compared to the first.

Have things changed? I was still under the impression that it was only retired golfing men that bought Jags. Do they do smaller and family cars now?

Yes I know I know I could Google but cba

boringbrain · 17/11/2022 17:18

I've driven many cars and BMW is far my fave car. I'd rather it be recalled and fixed rather than being switched off in the middle of the motorway whilst driving but obviously depending on what they recall it for.

gettingolderbutcooler · 17/11/2022 17:20

Never book our BMW into a bmw garage! 10 years old and a super car! I don't trust the own brand garages...

Tuters · 17/11/2022 17:21

Had this one 5 years and had 2 before and no problem. The garage we bought it from calls me every year on our 'purchase' anniversary just to say hi, how's it going!
When we went in the sales man asked who it was for and I said me (f) so he spoke directly to me about performance etc as I like speed. He did not patronise or dumb it down.
My neighbour bought a 1 year old Jag 2 years ago,,nothing but problems and 3 weeks ago it had to be scrapped.
When looking for cars do your research and look at other, independent owner reviews.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/11/2022 17:25

Do they do smaller and family cars now?

The XE is medium sized but nothing smaller to my knowledge. And yes, the average age of a Jag owner is ummmmm old.

AdelaideRo · 17/11/2022 17:34

It's so dealer dependent. The BMW salesperson was the only one who really listened that the car was from me.

I was all set to buy an A3 but the bloke was such a dick (and I was replacing my 5yo Golf so it wasn't really a crazy sidestep of a purchase).

Now I drive a skoda!

The worst car I have had recently was a Jag! Awful car.

Bakeacaketoday · 17/11/2022 17:39

I should add the best car is the Tesla we have currently, software updates done without going back to the dealer....

So much so we will be buying a 2nd one when the lease on DH's car is up.

I'm a car nut and have worked for BMW and Jaguar; Tesla all the way!

Howmanysleepsnow · 17/11/2022 17:43

Is it just me that wants to know more about the emu? Or did I completely misread that??

balalake · 17/11/2022 17:46

Given that most BMWs when driven by men are those who have never satisfied a woman in the bedroom and/or feel inadequate in between their legs, perhaps the salesmen they employ are similar.

Haha, Jaguar Land Rover products are the least reliable out there! This is pretty well known, they top the least reliable car surveys regularly.

Had many BMW’s never had a problem, JLR products a different story, awful reliability.

Glittertwins · 17/11/2022 17:52

Had a BMW for 9 years, DH for 6. Never had a problem with the local dealer. One of them had a recall and they noticed a serious tyre defect when they gave it a check over (nothing to do with recall) and that could have resulted in a serious crash / blow out that we'd never have known about otherwise.

Bwahaha

OxanaVorontsova · 17/11/2022 18:22

We’ve both had BMWs for about 15 years and wouldn’t willingly drive anything else, I think it is a dealer issue

SophiaLarsen · 17/11/2022 19:18

I have a BMW. I loves it. It's 8 years old now and better than our other 1 year old car.

Never had an issue with it. However I would not recommend BMW Swindon. Sexism runs supreme there.

Buttons294749 · 17/11/2022 19:26

I had a Bmw that had so many problems we ended up selling it for scrap as the parts were involved in actually making the car move all broke. Happy with my skoda now!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/11/2022 19:38

I could say this about Peugeot. We had the same warning message come up on our car and they had it the first time. Left the keys on the wheel arch in a car park for days before they even saw it. Then said it was ok. Same issue a couple of months later then they couldn't tell us anything for weeks. We finally got it back the first week of lockdown after being without it since the December of 2019. However loads of people have Peugeot cars and don't have this issue.

PeloFondo · 17/11/2022 19:40

I work for a dealership so I can answer a few questions maybe?
Unless it's booked as a specific waiting appointment, it'll just be done some time in the day
No, we don't have any loan cars because everyone wants them. Then we get people who crash them, don't return them on time, dirty the inside so badly it takes 3 days to clean them, the job takes longer than expected so the loan car is out for a week etc etc. Nobody wants to use the bus or pay for a taxi or get a lift so loan cars are booked up

Ask if they do collection and delivery, some do
Recalls are normal. Depends on the car how many but I wouldn't see 2-4 a year as unusual. They aren't always urgent so if it isn't then combine with a service/MOT. I mean say it's a seatbelt recall sure get it done but it could also be a recall for something like a software update and not safety related

vitahelp · 17/11/2022 19:43

I’ve heard tales like this about every brand of car/dealership. Our fleet manager at work who deals with most major car brands says they are all annoying.
If I took everyone’s advice about not buying a BMW/Audi/Ford etc I’d have to get the bus..

hilariousnamehere · 17/11/2022 19:47

Stuff like this is why I got my own obdii reader - Bluetooth connects to an app and tells me what the engine lights are for (and lets me switch them off, and gives me a clue if there are any faults that are shortly going to trip the engine light).

Lifesaver on my old Toyota MR2 which had a bunch of mods and I got fed up with paying £60 odd for diagnostics each time when it usually wasn't actually something that needed fixing. Friend with a BMW has used it, and now I can keep an eye on my current Toyota too, although touch wood she's not had an engine light in the four years I've had her. Still take them all to garage for actually fixing. Although not sure whether it would work to take a light off for a software update.

Hope you're out by now OP!

hilariousnamehere · 17/11/2022 19:48

Also please tell us more about the emu!!!
