On your news website, is it really necessary for US politics to be the biggest news story and taking up almost the entirety of the main home page?

Is there nothing going on anywhere else in the entire world?

Does anyone else think we really don't need this much information about elections going on in a foreign country? Or does anybody find US politics really interesting?

You do know that the BBC haven’t broadcast news in a very long while? It’s all woke, lefty propaganda and lies.

Omg you are one of those don’t trust the msm types aren’t you? Just a fact for you it’s an ex conservative that’s now head of the bbc and if anything I don’t think it’s that keft at all strangely those on the left say it’s to the right and those on the right like you seem to think it’s to the left . Therefore I say it’s balanced on the whole

Freespirit42 · 09/11/2022 20:33

I find it interesting that as a woman I believe there was a backlash against republicans this time because of their abortion stuff if you notice it wasn’t a massive red win that many republicans said it would. So that’s good but I find it scary how a country like the USA that is well known as a democratic country had 150 people standing as republicans claiming that elections are rigged and so many Americans still believe this . That may make a civil war look at what happens on Jan 6 th with Trump. We should take note because we have the same types in the Conservative party we have those that want to change the human rights bill in the U.K. scary times

Are you really that naive OP - or do you just think the UK is more important than any other part of the world? What happens in US politics affects the world, not just the US.

You do realise it's possible both to know the importance of the issue, and to deplore the OTT level of coverage on the BBC today?

Did you actually read my OP in which I said "Is there nothing going on anywhere else in the entire world?" or did you miss that bit? I said nothing at all about UK news being more important, so I don't know where you've got that idea from.

In any case, yes - US politics does affect us all, but all six of the top slots on the BBC's home page taken up with it? Really? One slot would have been enough.

Russia withdrawing troops from the Ukraine city of Kherson is news too, and that comes way down the list, as does today's earthquake in Italy, Namibia's president accusing rich countries of not caring about climate change, and the sheer number of private jets arriving at COP27. They are all newsworthy.

The ITV news website has the nurses' proposed strike action as their top story by the way, with the Russian withdrawal second.

Any other year, I may have agreed with you. But this year, Ukraine is on the line, as well as Climate change. So, I think it's totally justified.

I never watch the BBC now. They have completely lost my trust. Frankly, I think of them as a woke propaganda unit, run by sneering Oxbridge liberals. They don’t even bother to hide their left-wing bias. For crying out loud, how can they justify giving Frankie Boyle his own show? The man describes himself as a Communist! They also gave Stewart Lee (another militantly liberal-left comedian) a six part series.

I’ve been absolutely gripped.

I think its vital that we get a good view of world news, and don't just stick with a parochial stream of stories about the UK.

I think it's vital that we get a good view of world news, and don't just stick with an endless stream of stories about the US elections.

'World' is the operative word here. The BBC used to be the most respected provider of world news across the entire globe. Not any more.

I'm in the USA and to be fair, we do get quite a lot of UK news takeover too when something happens: Brexit this and Brexit that, Pound drops like crazy, Cameron resigns, May is PM, new elections, Johnson is PM, new elections, Johnson resigns, Truss is PM, Queen dies, Harry writes a book, UK bond market tanks, Pound drops like crazy, Truss resigns, Sunak is PM, no elections ... etcetera.

You can take a a couple of days of US news but you're right, it should not be ONLY that, especially as things are pretty slow-moving about the vote count right now.

Things also happen elsewhere; news here has:

Loads of COP27
Russia cedes Kherson. Ukraine cautious but NATO and Putin apologists happy
Iran says Saudi Arabia is annoying
UN says Iran is annoying
EU says Hungary is annoying
EU-wide satellite internet deal incoming
Mexico is doing some great work on pesticide bans
China is having various COVID surges, implementing local restrictions
North Korea fires missile
Gavin Williamson resigns
Somebody threw eggs at King Charles

@Teddeh Thanks for posting, it's really interesting to know the perspective from across the pond.

How's the tropical storm shaping up? I hear that Florida is getting nervous. We have family on the gulf coast so we tend to follow your weather reports.

Yup

Quveas · 09/11/2022 22:30

What happens in the US is important for the whole world. But fair is fair anyway - a few weeks ago everyone elses news was headlining the UK - I know because everyone I knew was contacting me with "what the F..." questions.

Thanks, @EndlessMagpies. It looks like Nicole is hitting the whole of Florida (except maybe most of the Panhandle) hard, and of course the Caribbean. Not much impact further north and west. I hope your family are safe!

What’s going on in American politics is massively consequential for the entire World, particularly in relation to positioning on Russia and China and the ability to pass aid packages for Ukraine.

This. If republicans gain control they want to remove all aid to Ukraine. We do not live in isolation.

That’s the sort of thing Trump would say.

Floralnomad · 09/11/2022 23:03

I’m really interested , American politics is fascinating, we watched a more in depth news piece about the results earlier on the news channel .

Yes they are safe and out of range this time thanks. Katrina was the big one for them and after that they decided to move further inland, and up a hill to avoid storm surges.

It is a massive story, and just undeneath it are all the other big stories, I think that is fine. ITV also has the midterms as top story.

Maybe you are just sad that Trump is screaming his head off in Mar-a-LagoGrin

But the thing is, how the election goes in US do have effects on whole world, so, it's quite different from any other countries.

On the whole I agree, have read some stories about the consequences for Ukraine, climate change, etc etc

But there is way too much detail about it

And Cop27 is a tad more important
