Anyone within the ulez lone actually kept their ulez 'failing' car and still using it and avoiding the fines?

I'm in the outer zone which will be covered by the ulez from next summer and I don't want to sell my car even though it will fail the ulez test.
I only use it a few times a week on relatively short local journeys.
Will I be able to avoid the fines if I stick to the back roads locally?
I can't believe every single road has a camera.

Anyone within the existing zone done this?

Anyone?

I live very near the current zone and have a non compliant car. At the moment I can avoid going in it. I have been fined in the past when I went in it with out realising. I now use auto pay just in case I take a wrong turn as I'd rather pay £12.50 than £80! If this rolls out next year as planned then I'm not sure what I'll do. I don't want to give up my car, I love it. But even if I take it out 2 times a week, then that's an extra £100 a month that I can't afford. I don't think it will be possible to avoid the cameras. I think they will be pretty much everywhere.

NiceGarden · 03/11/2022 19:00

I'm not sure, I suspect the majority of the cameras will be on the perimeter and on the main roads, busy junctions and bridges.
I'm guessing that if you only travel a few miles locally and stick to the back roads you'll probably be ok but I'm only guessing.
I'm sure there must be people who have tried it.

I live in a ulez zone and if your car isn't compliant you will get a ticket. Even minor small residential roads which lead into the ulez have cameras and signs warning you will get a ticket. I don't think there is any way around it.

NiceGarden · 03/11/2022 19:10

Yes, I appreciate that all the roads into the ulez will have cameras.
I'm talking about when I'm already living within the ulez and travelling a few miles on quiet roads, not leaving or re-entering.

I sympathise. I too love my little run around car and it would be perfect for my ds to learn to drive in next year but it’s not compliant - so I will have to sell it. I doubt we have any chance of avoiding fines. I am still slightly hopeful the extension will not happen. I am probably just in denial.

Latermumfairy · 03/11/2022 19:17

Kind of defeats the point of getting cleaner air for all our health if you’re driving around polluting….

Monoceros · 03/11/2022 19:25

I live in a ULEZ zone and have a non compliant car. In my experience every road in the ULEZ has a camera. During a parking suspension on my road I had to move my car to an adjacent road, and was even charged for that.

hmmm, I'm not sure I am polluting. We were actively encouraged to buy diesel cars 10 years ago because they were better for the environment.
Now we're being forced to get rid of perfectly sound cars without a penny in compensation during the biggest cost of living crisis in most of our lifetimes.

oh well, if that's the case then I will have to reconsider.

We had to sell our car over a year ago because it wasn’t compliant and we lived in the zone. We’d only bought it in 2014 and there were incentives to buy it at the time (like some kind of tax break I think) because it was eco-conpliant. Infuriating!

MsMelody · 03/11/2022 21:49

We live in a ULEZ zone and have a non-compliant car. So far as I know there are cameras on all the main roads. Our borough is heavily filtered to stop rat-running so it’s difficult to do a journey without going on a main road (should add I’m a fan of the filters and the ULEZ!)

Scratchnoitch · 03/11/2022 23:03

I get it’s infuriating - and it’s unfair. But we’re also killing children (literally) with pollution so we all have to deal with it

triedeyes · 04/11/2022 08:05

I do agree with the principle of the ULEZ . It's just so annoying after being sold a "low emission " diesel car in 2015 , to find it's not compliant for this. I pay ZERO Road tax and ZERO for my council car parking permit, due to supposedly having a low emission car. I planned to run my car as long as I could. It's a big family car. If I have to replace , then I'll only be able to swap it for a tiny car unless I pay thousands for another big car.

whatdoidonowffs · 04/11/2022 08:25

Soooooo annoying
I live 200 yards inside the proposed ULEZ zone I would have to pay to go to work or collect my daughter from school or her mums
with the bridge toll it would cost me £15 a day just to go to work so I’ve just sold a perfectly good diesel car on which the emissions were so low I only paid £30 tax all so mr Kahn can try and make a few quid
I wonder how much the installation of cameras and signs will cost ?

NiceGarden · 04/11/2022 10:50

@Monoceros @MsMelody
What do you do then if your cars are non compliant?
Do you just not use your cars or just pay the £15 each time you do drive?
I guess £15 is still cheaper than a taxi in most cases.

MsMelody · 04/11/2022 11:23

@NiceGarden , we just pay the £12.50 when we drive. It means we only use the car for big journeys outside London or the odd urgent thing. It’s definitely reduced our car use. We thought about getting a new car but we’ve got a diesel in relatively good nick and it’s cheaper to pay the ULEZ.

Scratchnoitch · 05/11/2022 13:31

all so mr Kahn can try and make a few quid

Less about money. More about the fact that kids are actually dying due to the polluted air around London. You do know it’s been ruled as cause of death in cases now? If not, educate yourself

After the ULEZ was started tfl stated that it hadn’t raised as much money as they had hoped it would. If you think that dickhead Khan is doing this purely ’for the kids’ then you are, at best, naive.

MsMelody · 05/11/2022 14:14

Is raising money for public transportation a bad thing?

Bumbletrees · 05/11/2022 14:43

Agreed. We need much money in public transport so people don’t have to drive their polluting cars! And you do know more money for TfL doesn’t mean more money for him personally so what do you think his nefarious reasons are?

And frankly I couldn’t care less what his intentions are (although I do believe they are good) if the outcome is the same. Less children dying. In fact I can’t see how you can sanely argue against less polluting cars!

NiceGarden · 25/11/2022 21:52

Just resurrecting this after today's announcement that the ulez is going ahead in August.

I reckon you can get away with a certain amount of driving. My neighbour's car is non-compliant & he kept it. The immediate back streets in my area don't have cameras but the main roads do.

CheckingItAll · 28/07/2023 16:15

My eldests dad has just called me to say he’s upping his child support by £400 a month as he knows I need to use the car every day. I’m very lucky he’s prepared to do this - the scrap page scheme isn’t a viable option for me
