We absolutely loved how to get away with murder on Netflix

GeordieRacer · 03/11/2022 12:40

Also Narcos

@Tomorrowisalatterday

'I found the Sopranos incomprehensible because of the accents'

Did you mean The Wire? The Baltimore accent is hard to decipher hence we watched it with subtitles, which I think added to the enjoyment as we had to concentrate more. The Wire is really excellent.

The Sopranos is just New Jersey accents and not hard to understand.

I loved both of them and feel due a rewatch soon!

Bridgerton
Ozark

Absolutely The Americans.

Would definitely fulfil the gritty criteria. It's set in the 80s in America at the height of the cold war. An on the surface perfect American couple, but who are deep undercover Soviet spies. Even their teenaged children are initially unaware.

Lots of espionage and murder. But it's also deeply emotional, lots of relationship issues. Characters are amazing and so believable, the script is fantastic and it has probably the best ending of a series I've seen.

I also love The Handmaid's Tale (but also Buffy.. You should give it a chance! So much more than vampires 😉)

HalfWower · 03/11/2022 14:28

Tinker Tailor (and Smiley's People) (mentioned above) are on Brit Box. Is the Thick of It gritty?

More Happy Valley?

Oh my! It’s never left me. Sometimes find myself standing at the kitchen sink recalling bits.

ThatshallotBaby · 04/11/2022 12:11

Taboo was really good. Hopefully there will be a third series.

zukiecat · 04/11/2022 12:57

The Last Kingdom.

Simply the best television series ever made.

Impatiently waiting for the last instalment, a film, Seven Kings Must Die to be released on Netflix.

Until then I content myself with watching S1-5 over and over again.

Bemyclementine · 04/11/2022 21:26

@sandgrown I have seen both happy Valley and This uis us and loved them both.

Greys anatomy. I came late to this, but I’m on season 16 now and love it.

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 04/11/2022 21:39

Ted lasso. Not a big one but you should definitely watch it

BorgQueen · 04/11/2022 21:51

If you have Disney+, The Old Man, with Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, only one season as yet but it’s been very watchable.
One of my fave series from recent years was Timeless, a scifi/historical hybrid,
I absolutely loved it.

House of the Dragon if you can’t bring yourself to watch all of GOT.

I’m quite enjoying the reimagining of The Equalizer with Queen Latifah ( bit of a change from Edward Woodward!) .

bigblueyonder · 04/11/2022 21:56

The Handmaids tale
The Fall
Killing Eve
Ozark
Stranger Things

If you like gritty and you're happy with subtitles, then Spiral. French police drama set in Paris. Brilliant.
