Also Person of Interest. Possibly the most underrated show I've watched.

Agree with this, one of my top 5 shows easily and I'm a tricky pleaser. Great plot, great acting, just brilliant

Breaking bad. Orange is the new black although it got a bit dull around season 3

hmb255 · 02/11/2022 23:23

Definitely breaking bad and then better call Saul. 2 of the best tv shows ever made.

The Shield. Makes The Wire seem like The Bill.

The Wire
The Shield
Sons of Anarchy
The Americans
Person of Interest
Rome
The Blacklist
Orange is the new black

CockingASnook · 03/11/2022 01:42

The Wire is, for me, the most compelling TV series ever. It’s art.
Honourable mentions to The Americans and The Sopranos, though they’re nowhere near as real. Never got into Breaking Bad.

MrsDeWinter · 03/11/2022 01:47

House

Big Love - fictional but heavily influenced by true stories of Mormons and the breakaway Fundamentalist sects, I've rewatched about 4 times and feel differently about the characters every time.

Call my Agent - it's French, so subtitled but amazing. Prime did an english version this year called Ten percent, which was OK but not a patch on the original

Sopranos

Mad Men

Schitts Creek

I suffered through breaking bad for DH but loved Better call Saul, the spin off

Kath & Kim

Motherland

GoT. I binged the first seven seasons in time for the final season. I really didn’t think it would be my bag. It got better and better as it went along - and the way small pieces link through the seasons is amazing. I almost wish I could watch it all again with no idea of what is about to happen.

Breaking Bad. The beginning of the first episode I thought “wtf is going on?” And then I was hooked. Blooming brilliant.

Better Call Saul - you can’t watch this until you’ve seen Breaking Bad. I was sceptical when I started. Really couldn’t see how they could come close to BB. I was SO WRONG. It’s bloody brilliant and am gutted that it’s finished.

Ozark is good - you’ll change your mind on who you do and don’t like!

Inventing Anna on Netflix was interesting. Think there was a bit of artistic license, but gave an overall idea of how she operated.

My BIL has raves about Vikings and The Last Kingdom, but I’ve not tried them yet.

Tezza1 · 03/11/2022 04:02

It's fairly old now, and only went for three series, and came to an abrupt end with lots of open plot lines, but Deadwood was wonderful. Great writing and peformances.

Which brings me to something I was surprised that I just loved, "Justified," a modern day Western based on Elmore Leonard and had Timothy Olyphant in the lead. He played a sanctimonious stuffed shirt in Deadwood but in this he was smooth Southern charm personified. Initially, I only really paid it any interest because he played the Justified character in an episode of "The Good Place and he certainly piqued my interest. it was great: the right balance of strong storylines, action, violence, bizarre characters and vile villians, but most of all, witty and clever dialogue.

Prison Break
Breaking Bad
Peaky Blinders
Luther
Line of Duty
Marcella
Happy Valley
Broadchurch
Killing Eve (esp seasons 1&2)
Discovery of Witches (not especially gripping but you might like it if the Witcher is your thing)
Game of Thrones

Giggorata · 03/11/2022 04:44

Apart from some of those already mentioned:
Hannibal.
Criminal Minds (at least up to Hotch leaving)
Twin Peaks
Firefly
Good Omens
The Man in the High Castle

GetUsedToTheHeatAgain · 03/11/2022 04:50

Glad someone mentioned Deadwood, fantastic and I was really glad they did not just drag it out like so many good TV programmes, the film years later was good but not much as the TV programme.

The Shield also, for its time it was really shocking but excellent entertainment if you can call it that.

Six feet under, dark humour, loved it.

The Americans started off so well......

Mad Men such great writing and performances from all the cast.

West Wing.

24, again a great original concept then a few seasons in pretty rubbish, but good entertainment.

Lots of the 'big' ones ran too long started off really great and then downhill and the writing bad, ie The Walking Dead, Vikings, GOT, Orange is the new black, Breaking Bad and so on

Pomtiddly · 03/11/2022 05:35

Homeland
Spooks
Line of Duty
Happy Valley
In Treatment
Baptiste
Shetland
Vera
The Killing
The Bridge

melchim · 03/11/2022 05:39

Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Wire are among the highest quality in my opinion

GoT isn't for everyone, especially if you don't like fantasy and gratuitous nudity.

Enzobear · 03/11/2022 06:01

Breaking bad is my all time favourite series- just loved it from start to finish. Loved Better call Saul too. Would also recommend Prison Break.

clpsmum · 03/11/2022 06:04

Sons of anarchy

JuneOsborne · 03/11/2022 06:08

Mind hunters was good! And only a couple of seasons.

Never thought I’d see anything better than GOT, but then I watched breaking bad and better call Saul. All brilliant. Also like the Crown and Manifest.

FrontRowSeat · 03/11/2022 06:27

Does Better Call Saul get better - I’ve watched the first two episodes and feel like nothing happened but I loved BB? I really want to like BCS .
