Come backs for comments regarding my clothes

I have a male colleague who thinks he's a comedian, it's almost impossible to speak to him without him making a 'joke' .
Recently his jokes have been aimed at my clothes.
I have worn a striped top and he asked why I'd come as a sailor ; red trousers and I'm a clown ; black trousers and black top , I was a stick of liquorice; ankle boots with a couple of tassels, asked if I was John Wayne.
I do have a sense of humour but he's getting on my nerves and I'm very close to telling him that at least I can change my clothes but he's stuck with his face .
I don't want to make a big thing of it and be rude but would love a short sharp comment to make him stop, something that won't make me seem like a sour puss but will shut him up.

Surely you could just tell him that your wardrobe is none of his business and he's being rude?

pippinsleftleg · 01/11/2022 20:25

Complain to your or his boss.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 01/11/2022 20:25

Say 'that's right I have come as a (stick of liquorice/ clown/sailor) and I see you've come as an arsehole, at least one of us will be able to change'

“Shut the fuck up”

Personal comments are against the code of conduct in work places so yeah, I’d speak to HR. You can go in lightly, and say it’s a bit awkward but you’ve had enough.

And it’s constant personal comments too. Get HR to update his line manager. You do t have to deal with this on your own.

How about "Are you hoping to become a fashion designer? Wish you'd give up your day job."

@AlwaysFoldingWashing
it’s a pity we don’t have annual awards on MN. You would get a gold for this answer.

dudsville · 01/11/2022 20:29

I wouldn't quip back. I'd dispassionately but with a hard stare tell him to stop commenting on my clothing.

hugoagogo · 01/11/2022 20:30

I think you might be best pretending you haven't heard.
Giving a snippy answer could just encourage him.
People are twats.

Aw thank you, always happy to help with the sarcasm 😂

Does he do this to everyone or are you the chosen one? He sounds insufferable, but i think report it to your HR/line manager but don't acknowledge or engage with him at all when he makes the remarks. Ignore him.

I'm the only one, as far as I know. He is a total dick, I can't stand him.

This.

parrotonthesofa · 01/11/2022 20:44

I'd say something like is there a reason that you feel the need to comment on my clothes every day because I'm finding it a bit odd

Ewww. I would just not even acknowledge his presence at all.

JessicaPeach · 01/11/2022 20:48

Someone I used to work with said to our boss once 'why don't you give me a call when fashion comes knocking on your door?' It still makes me laugh now

LimeCheesecake · 01/11/2022 20:50

Don’t make a come back - because then it’s “banter” and “oh she gives as good as she gets” - this won’t end it just escalate and make it tricker too complain.

id go with @parrotonthesofa ’s suggest of asking him why does he feel the need to comment on your clothes each day as you find it strange. Make it uncomfortable - point out it’s every day and only you. Whatever he says in reply, don’t respond at all.

lookslikeabombhitit · 01/11/2022 20:52

Just "yes" with a short, unfunny laugh, a hard stare and walk away- then speak to HR. He sounds like a tool so I'd be wary of resorting to insults in case he scoots off to HR about how mean you've been. 🙄 (I've seen a similar situation play out as a union rep).

BobbyBobbyBobby · 01/11/2022 20:55

He fancies you but knows you are not interested so is going down the route of trying to make you feel awkward and squirm.

Every time he says something, draw in a manager or someone senior by saying, “Mr Manager, XXXX says I look like a clown. What do you think?’
