I spent most of the 90s…

With blobs of nail varnish on my tights, as legend had it it would stop ladders running.

Blue, red, purple, it didn’t matter. Mostly applied while on my legs so the said tights would get a bit stuck to my skin.

Did anyone else live by any 90s life hacks, probably learnt from Sugar magazine?

I did that! And toothpaste on spots. I tried putting my freshly painted nails into cold water because it was meant to set them. It does not.
The first part of the 90s I was at school and miserable, then I was in college and drunk a lot and shagging various boys in uncomfortable places. I thoroughly enjoyed that part.
I also lost my eyebrows in the 90s.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 30/10/2022 17:50

Working loads.
Buying stuff for my first house I bought.
Growing my hair to my waist.
Going to rock clubs.
Staring my non stop memberships to slimming clubs. Weight watchers/slimming world despite being a size 10 with a gorgeous figure.
Going to gigs & festivals.
Going on amazing holidays.
Establishing my life with my now dh.

Happy happy days!

I did that the night before my history gcse . I say that exam with no flesh on my chin and it was weeping and excruciating where it burnt my skin off I had to go to minor injuries after and I failed the exam as couldn’t think due to the pain 😭

Hahaha (sorry).

Biactol had a similar effect. I was never massively spotty but I remember that would take the top layer of your face off.

I also remember using 'colour correcting' foundation which was green, and some sort of double-sided face cleaning pad which was rough on one side and smooth on the other.

Drinking Malibu and coke, or Hooch, then neat vodka. Taking tabs of acid and going to the local garden centre in a bikini thinking I was in a James Bond film. The Workers Beer Factory at festivals.

93/94 My absolute favourite outfit was a multicoloured tie dyed crochet jumper with holes in it, worn over a black vest top and a very short black skirt with tiny mirrors in it, fishnet tights, massive army boots with 'RIP Kurt' tippexed on them.

96/97 Tiny little crop tops saying 'take me to your dealer', or 'psycho bitch', bare midriff, silver miniskirt from that neon/UV stall at Camden market, lace up knee high boots or massive neon orange trainers.

Wearing miss selfridge acid colour and pastel colour nail varnishes, putting Sun-in on the front of my hair (you sprayed it in and then heated with a hair dryer and it would go lighter), reading position of the fortnight with all my friends on the bus 😂 And having all the body shop lip balms and perfumes!

Arnaquer · 30/10/2022 18:08

I still do nail varnish on my tights.
90s were spent drinking JD and coke, smoking Marlboro lights.

Early 90's I was in my early teens. I spent a lot of time with my head upside 'scrunch drying' my spiral perm with a diffuser. Thanks to reading of Jackie magazine and the like, I was also obsessed with using a sea sponge to scrub the (non existent) 'orange peel' cellulite on the tops of my thighs.

Me and my friends used to spend hours doing those silly quizzes in magazines (What sort of girlfriend are you?') and thinking and talking about boys and what it would be like to actually have sex (squeal!)

Mid 90's was all about going out; spending hours making false ID to get into pubs and clubs underage (the bouncers never even looked at, they didn't care that we were 16!) I used to get dressed up in a little dress that looked like a nightie, complete with ripped tights and DMs, and think I looked like Courtney Love!

Late 90's was all about the Wonderbra, boobs jacked up under your chin, with bronzer between them to enhance the cleavage....good times!

garlictwist · 30/10/2022 18:34

I remember my sister washing her hair with banana as she'd read it as a "tip" in Sugar magazine. Didn't half make a mess of the drains.

girlmom21 · 30/10/2022 18:41

I wish I was born 15 years earlier.
The 90s sound like great fun. I was born in 95

mommatoone · 30/10/2022 18:41

I love this thread!!! I also used to wear sweater shop t shirts, leggings and rimmel sunshimmer where my leggings ended to get that 'bronzed' look.
Listening to the shamen and stu allan at the weekend thinking we were in a nighclub (14 at the time).

Pissed on 20/20 and trying to get in night clubs I was way too young for!

Same!

Oh god yes the wonderbras! None of the teens now even seem to wear bras. And I can’t blame them they’re so uncomfortable. But yes I remember wonderbras with added “chicken fillets” - sometimes even two lots!

LunaTheCat · 30/10/2022 20:26

I finished my degree in 1988 so I mostly spent the 90’s as a junior doc and trainee GP being utterly terrified that I would kill somebody!
Everyone else was partnering up and I was single, working hard and felt wretched and lonely.
I bought a house and discovered gardening.
I moved into my house with a bed and 2 armchairs ! The house had a genuine 50’s kitchen which I couldn’t wait to get rid of .. yellow and red and blue everywhere!
I had very little money and struggled to pay the mortgage as interest rates where high.
My parents separated after a very acrimonious marriage, they both became unwell and needed lots support.
I was boring as hell and didn’t smoke or go to raves.
it was a hard decade but in 2001 I met my gorgeous husband!

MintyGreenDreams · 30/10/2022 20:26

I spent most of the 90s obsessing about unsuitable men and drinking a hell of a lot

Violinist64 · 30/10/2022 20:26

I spent the nineties having and bringing up my three children (born 1991, 1993 and 1996).

DramaAlpaca · 30/10/2022 20:30

I spent much of the 90s being pregnant, breastfeeding and looking after babies and toddlers. My fun years were the 80s.

Throwaway1066 · 30/10/2022 20:35

Yes, toothpaste on spots! Really didn’t improve the situation!

I genuinely thought I looked the dogs bollocks in my knock off Naff Naff jacket from the market and several plastic dummies round my neck Grin

The I discovered grunge and it was massive jeans, lumber shirts and DMs. A packet of B&H in my school bag instead of lunch, no wonder I was so skinny.

Ahh kind of sad that I was just a primary school kid in the 90s, reading this!

Vampirethriller · 31/10/2022 06:30

I had a great black Wonderbra and big chicken fillets to stack me up. With my skin tight shiny dress, platform sandals (black PVC), Embassy Number 1 and Obsession perfume, black eyeliner and French manicure done with a little white pencil.

the80sweregreat · 31/10/2022 06:37

My fun years were the 80s too
The 90s had some good music with Brit pop etc , but mostly bringing up children was as much fun as I got!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/10/2022 06:53

Studying!
Wasting my time thinking I could "save" a hopeless boyfriend. I did, then he married his best friend's girlfriend. 🤷‍♀️
Didn't do many drugs.

What is FT?

Financial Times

I loved the 90’s. I started uni, out every weekend and was the thinnest I’ve ever been. I had a great group of friends. Could get Dr Marten boots for £30 at the local workwear shop.
DD (19) loves 90’s music and fashion, she has outfits that look just like I did back then. It was with horror I realised that it was the equivalent of me liking the 60’s vibes of my own mother.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 31/10/2022 07:08

Looking ashy in Rimmel powder compact 10 shades lighter than my skin as makeup for darker skin was non existent. Coffee shimmer and brown lip liner for special occasions.

Wearing DM boots with long floral dresses and homemade velvet choker necklaces.

BrilliantGreenFlamingo · 31/10/2022 07:44

Drinking cider out of those massive plastic bottles. Before cider became cool. Listening to indie music, going to gigs and Glastonbury. It was a lot of fun. Taking photos to jessops or boots to get them printed.

wearing baggy trousers. Had to be long, not ankle swingers like trousers are these days.

anyone remember triple print photos? Where you could cut off the two smaller side photos to give to friends.

I wonder if young people are like that now or what they do now. Must be so different with phones and social media.
