Keir Starmer - response to my question

Just watched the MN interview with Keir Starmer. Thank you Mumsnet for putting my question to him. But the answer was so disappointing.

I said that I’m a single working mum and have told my kids that we need to wrap up warm this winter because I can’t afford to pay for heating. And that it’s going to be a cheap Christmas. And, crucially, that I haven’t told them we might lose our home. I asked what Labour will do to help people like me.

He said ‘grow the economy.’ Justine, to her credit, said people like me need help now. He said something about freezing energy bills.

I’m so scared, . I can do without heating, though it will be uncomfortable. I can’t do without my home.

I don’t think he has any real understanding at all about how frightened people are right now. Or the difficulties we’re in through no fault of our own.

Unfortunately the only thing coming out of labour atm is that Keir has pledged that he will make misgendering an arrestable offence.
That’s strange because I’ve read in the last week that they intend to launch GB energy so that utilities are back in state control, they are calling for energy bills to be frozen this winter, they hope to insulate 19 million homes, create a million green jobs, secure energy independence and end sewer dumping, do your statements is a little misleading.
If you’re a Tory, just admit it, if you’re not, surely you would be better off voting Labour and lobbying your local MP once they’re in. We benefit scroungers need your help.

@DeliaTookATumble No need to apologise for being fearful and angry. The country is in a massive mess and the hateful divisions that have been stoked is bloody awful and oppressive. I do think your life would be better under labour but I hope pressures ease asap. For myself, I'll probably pay more tax under labour BUT I'll benefit from the very fabric of society not crumbling around me so I'm happy with that

@CoopersChase I am working on the edge of green energy technology and it's a bloody mess. We are going to miss the window of opportunity if we are not careful because right now it's all of the tories mates that are gobbling up the cash/conversations needed to really kick start the revolution. You're right we have the right geography and expertise to really nail this and we might just squander this opportunity.

Kier Starmer is the labour party's biggest problem at the moment. We need a functioning opposition and he is a woman-hating numpty with no robust policies. Therefore he is the country's biggest problem. He needs to retire and grown potatoes or something because he is not fit for public office.

The U.K. has halved the carbon output per capita in the last decade, so it’s not really tenable to suggest why you are here.

Op direct your anger at the tories!

In fairness though, Labour can’t do anything to help you right now because they aren’t in government.

But if he has no plan or concrete ideas of what he would do because he's not in govt, why give interviews? Seems a pointless exercise.

That’s not really very sensible, though, it’s not the conservatives who chose her career, decided she should have a family, or caused her to lose her husband.

Focussing on blaming others is rarely a route to a better place.

Halved? Is that supposed to be good as I think that’s shockingly low relative to the scale of what’s needed.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/10/2022 01:18

What do you think the opposition can do for you?
you should be writing to Sunak.

Yes, it’s incredibly good, getting half way to net zero in only ten years.

How can that possibly be described as “shockingly low”?

CoopersChase · 30/10/2022 01:41

Reducing by a mathematical half doesn’t mean you are left with a small number.

I can see the tone of your posts so will
leave you to it.

We now out out less per capita than does China. Trying to pretend that we are not doing well or that the government is not trying is not tenable.

I think that you need to educate yourself on the subject.

CoopersChase · 30/10/2022 08:04

Another obnoxious Tory poster who can only insult rather than engage in actual debate, what a surprise.

We now out out less per capita than does China.

Of course we do! Is that your big headline for how well the government is doing?

China is the largest industrial nation still going through rapid urbanisation and the UK is arguably a knowledge-based economy - so an idiotic comparison. Plus if everything the UK imports was included into those statistics it would look very different.

pompei8309 · 30/10/2022 08:18

I’m sorry but what changed so drastically from few months ago that you’re now fearing you’ll lose your home?

er, Liz Truss.

TheBiologyStupid · 31/10/2022 16:32

I agree, Delia - Keir's answer was very generic and didn't directly address your question. So sorry to hear how tough and worrying things are for you right now.

My own question was also put to Keir and I was a little disappointed with the response, too. I wish he'd been asked my follow-up.
