Should I confront the nursery workers?

So my baby was born 7 weeks early due to severe preeclampsia and IUGR. She was 3lb 5oz. She was in the NICU for only 20 days due to doing so well, out before she was even 4lbs.

She started nursery when she was 10 month actual age (8mo-ish corrected).

Nursery keep mentioning about her core strength. That they’re trying to build her muscles in her legs up as she only wants to sit, doesn’t walk etc. They keep asking if she’s had her year check up from the health visitor and I’m starting to worry that they think she’s delayed or that I’m not helping her develop properly.

They’re correct in that she isn’t walking independently but she does walk holding onto your fingers, she holds onto furniture and is quite steady. She can’t pull herself up on furniture yet but can do it on people, like she’ll climb up our bodies like a little monkey. She doesn’t want to sit when she’s at home, she cries until you walk about with her. She isn’t crawling but is bum shuffling (steadily and extremely rapidly when she wants to), I was also a bum shuffler. I didn’t crawl at all and was walking at 9 months but I was born at 43ish weeks back in the 80’s and was chunky as anything.

As far as I’m concerned, she’s actually hit most of her milestones early or on track for actual age instead of corrected. I was told very premature babies are often really late to do most things. She has 5 or 6 words in her vocabulary, babbles appropriately, waves, camps hands and mimics actions and stuff really well.

Should I be worried here? I’ve had a bit of health anxiety since she was born as I was so ill and she was so tiny so the nursery repeatedly saying things about her lack of strength (which I don’t agree with) is weighing on my mind.

My 2lb 9 29weeker hit every milestone pretty much on time but it took them ages to walk. 18 months was first steps. I wouldn't be too worried yet

SpookyPanda · 28/10/2022 21:41

How old is she?

BattenburgDonkey · 28/10/2022 21:41

How old is she? My DD was 11 weeks prem and hit every milestone right at the end when she was just about to be referred on, so she walked about a week before they were going to start investigating why she couldn’t walk yet (at nearly 2). Since hitting about 3 she’s been totally on track with everything and is now big for her age. I’d say there’s nothing to worry about

She sounds exactly like my daughter (one of twins born at 36w) who didn’t crawl until she was well past 1, she bum shuffled at a similar age to your dd… she didn’t walk until 19m!
If you are worried talk to your HV but I remember them being happy she was on the move and them just checking in occasionally that there was progress.

SpookyPanda · 28/10/2022 21:44

I don't think you need to confront them, but just tell them when you have the check booked in etc.

Corestrengthworries · 28/10/2022 21:46

She turned one 3 weeks ago, so she’s 11 months 3 days corrected age.

I’ve been really happy with her development so far tbh. The health visitor had no issues at her last check up but it’s just since she started nursery in August that they’ve consistently been saying things about her core strength or lack of muscles in her legs. I think her legs are quite sturdy, lanky and not chunky, but she’s not floppy or anything.

I’m just getting a bit sick of things being said when picking her up.

Do you have a health visitor to ask for advice or referrals? My 10 month old has been crawling since 6 months and my oldest was crawling from 8 months and he has lots of developmental delays.
I don't think you need to confront anyone though. They're just trying to help.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 28/10/2022 21:47

FYI though some babies never crawl and go straight to walking so it could be nothing.

girlmom21 · 28/10/2022 21:48

Why don't you call the health visitor and ask for a meeting with them and the nursery so you can review everyone's concerns together?

Skinnermarink · 28/10/2022 21:51

She has a vocabulary at just over one?

I wouldn’t be worried personally but they tend to have to tick these things off at nursery, Ofsted make them do milestone paperwork, it’s all a bit silly.

Singleandproud · 28/10/2022 21:51

Don't confront anyone, just remind them she was a preemie and say your medical team have no concerns.

My full term baby didn't start walking until she was a year old, nothing developmentally wrong with her just some take longer than others.

walshejlpaos · 28/10/2022 21:53

Not need to confront anyone, just explain as others have said that you have no concerns etc

RogueV · 28/10/2022 21:54

Is she under a paediatrician?

My son was born at 32 weeks and didn’t walk until he was 18 months, everything was slightly delayed.

He is now 7 and doing smashing!

It’s probably worth having a chat with your daughters key workers.

Passanotherjaffacake · 28/10/2022 21:55

My dd was 42,weeks - so not prem and became a real chonk. She didn’t walk independently until 17 months. Didn’t bother crawling until 11 months. Much more interested in speech bc and fine motor. Health visitor was not interested until 18 months - I had it in my diary to call! Sounds like your dd is doing really well in other areas. I would seek some reassurance from the HV, I found mine very practical. Just for your piece of mind.

LoveBluey · 28/10/2022 21:55

I'd just repeat that you're not concerned and all children hit milestones at different ages.

My first was full term and walked at 18 months, my second was 5 weeks early and walked at 15 months.

Both fairly late walkers but still within a normal range and didn't warrant any concern or intervention. Plus I got to enjoy a bit more time of putting them down and knowing they'd stay where I'd left them!

StClare101 · 28/10/2022 21:56

Why on earth do you want to confront the nursery staff?

Curta · 28/10/2022 21:58

Exactly. Confronting someone you trust to look after your child should be reserved for extreme situations.

What’s your issue with saying vocabulary? She can say 5 words clearly and attempts others 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’ve already told them on multiple occasions that the things they are saying, I don’t agree with. Like they extended her settling in period to 4 weeks instead of 2 as she apparently wasn’t settling. This is a baby who’s been with a childminder since 9 months, gets taken to mother and toddler groups, is very sociable and isn’t strange with people…she’s had no problem settling in other contexts. I already refuted their observation about her sitting all the time and not wanting to walk as she does the complete opposite at home.

I’ve text the health visitor but I’m thinking that she hasn’t been out to do the year check up yet as my baby is “technically” not a year yet.

It's not other posters taking 'issue'...

JudyJ · 28/10/2022 22:00

My son was born at 32 weeks, in NICU for 5.5 weeks, and he didn't walk till 18 months ish (15/16 months corrected). He also didn't start talking till later than a lot of his peers but his language progressed very quickly once he did, his language/vocabulary now (aged 4) is incredible and he never stops talking, runs around/always moving and is as strong as an ox! He was later with a lot of things (weaning/eating took a looooong time) and I wish I could go back in time and tell myself not to stress, it would all work out fine.

Sounds like she's doing great OP, not walking at 12 months isn't unusual even for babies born at term.

RandomMess · 28/10/2022 22:03

My very healthy 42 weeker 90th centile didn't walk until she was well over a year old - independently she was 18 months. She competes in sport at national level now!!

My one with undiagnosed silent reflux couldn't sit independently until 11/12 months due to lack of tummy/floor time as she spent the first 6 months screaming the place down.

They are being ridiculous IMHO.

Tummy time was what sparked this thread. I picked her up today and they said they’d been doing tummy time with her to strengthen her core. I did tummy time when she was little, she absolutely hated it. As soon as she could she would just roll over onto her back, no amount of trying to get her to stay in place with cushions or anything worked. And she’s been rolling since she was about 5 months.

Sounds far more mobile than my 2 🤣 even the more active ones were not early walkers!

Sounds like your DD is more into her talking than walking.

My eldest said her first clear word at 9 months and never stopped, still hasn't at 26!

wouldukissafrog · 28/10/2022 22:12

My dd wasn't prem and still didn't walk until 19m , seriously don't worry
