Things you're inexplicably good or bad at!

I was poaching some eggs the other day, and it always something I've found really easy. I hear people talking about how difficult it is to poach eggs but I dont get it - heat up the water, swirl it, drop the eggs in and a few minutes later hike them out again. First time I asusmed it was beginers luck, but I always seem to nail it. Also folding fitted sheets. Just get your fingers in the corners and fold the bloody thing - I don't see why people say it's hard.

but this isn't purley bragging - because I can't crack an egg properly to save my life! I had 2 eggs most mornings for years, so its not a lack of practice - but I very rarely get a nice clean break and no shell in the egg! I've tried all different techniques, on the side of the pan/bowl, on a flat surface, using a knife - none seem to work for me.

Got me wondering if other people have things that find easy that are supposed to be hard and visa versa

And before you ask, yes it is a slow day at work!

For some odd reason I have perfect pitch - but only when it comes to listening to instruments, or to others singing.

I can't carry a tune in a bucket.

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 28/10/2022 14:32

Good - numbers and dates. I can probably tell you the birthday if everyone in my primary school class.

Bad - getting the timings right when cooking dinner. Something always ends up cold. DH does most of the cooking thank goodness.

RiftGibbon · 28/10/2022 14:33

Somehow pretty good at boules (the beach version). Can't do 10 pin bowling properly and have never tried lawn bowls. My family won't play boule with me now!

Oh, and I'm excellent at procrastinating. But I'll explain about that later.

RagzRebooted · 28/10/2022 14:35

Guestimating weights and measures of things by eye, like when baking or measuring things.
Googling. That seems to be a skill, I don't know what I do differently but I always seem to get more accurate and useful results, faster than DH/work colleagues.

I'm rubbish at folding things neatly, putting cables/wires away without tangling them. Pretty crap at cleaning.

CloudJam · 28/10/2022 15:02

Good:

Plant and animal identification, cooking, driving and parallel parking, knowing the time to within a few minutes, knowing when the oven timer is going to go off, untangling necklaces and Christmas lights, doing plaits, working out twists/whodunnits in films.

Bad:

Any hairstyle but plaits, applying anything other than very basic make up, blow drying my hair smoothly, poaching eggs, making toad in the hole, concentrating on conversations in noisy places, remembering which films I've watched before, remembering famous people's names, doing impressions.

RelativePitch · 28/10/2022 15:26

Excellent at: parallel parking, pumpkin carvings, roast potatoes, getting eye drops or pills into uncooperative pets, not just my own and deliberately activating my sublingual saliva glands to do a spitting lizard type thing. It's gross, but fun.

Unable to do:
Make up and hairstyles (The universe knew what it was doing when it gave me only sons)
Maths (had to take the special papers just to get a C which was unheard of at my school)
Rolling cigarettes and spliffs (Probably worked out for the best that one)

Strokethefurrywall · 28/10/2022 15:26

I can park the shit out of anything with wheels, any space, perfectly every time.

Bizarrely, I can accurately guess what week of pregnancy most women are at which either freaks them out or fascinates them.

I am a great cook without much practice but an absolutely appalling baker.

Zott · 28/10/2022 15:52

Can’t remember lyrics of any songs bar maybe 4 words in the chorus. Even songs I’ve loved for 40 years, they just don’t stick. Also no sense of direction whatsoever.

I can come up with ideas quickly for kids homework, projects, essays anything like that I can throw out 6 ideas and they pick one they like to run with. I almost always work out whodunnit in tv stuff or see the twist.

orangeisthenewpuce

It's interesting how not getting lost is one of your strong point and math, not so. I have the opposite dilemma!

I marvel at people who don't get lost! 😀

Thingsthatmakeyougohmmmmmmm · 28/10/2022 17:44

Oh, and I'm excellent at procrastinating. But I'll explain about that later.

That made me 😁

Got2besoon · 28/10/2022 17:45

Guessing the price of something. Its spooky how accurate I am.

Shite at directions.

Nowhereelsetogo90 · 28/10/2022 18:50

Good - Remembering. Photographic memory.

Bad - Hand eye coordination. I’m about as likely to break the window of your neighbours house two doors down than I am to successfully throw a ball to you.

IdontSayBlahBlahBlah666 · 28/10/2022 19:48

Amazing at getting things back in their original packaging. I can get pop up play tents neatly back in the bag, fold enormous leaflets/maps back to their original state, even fairy lights back in their original boxes. It all looks fresh from the shop.

Awful at cooking eggs in any way. I don’t eat them, only do them for DH and DS.They always look raw so I turn them to rubber!

1FootInTheRave · 28/10/2022 19:53

Good at scrabble, time management and efficiency. Good with people, can chat to anyone. Good at interviews.

Bad at home decor, I just cannot visualise anything. Bad at most things that involve coordination, in particular football and hockey. Very bad at baking.

waterlego · 28/10/2022 19:55

I’m good at reading maps and have a fairly good innate sense of direction so can often fairly quickly orientate N/S/E/W even in a new place.

I’m bad at cooking rice without turning it to mush- or I should say I was bad at it but have practised and worked on the method and can now do it perfectly 9 times out of 10. Took me a couple of decades to get to this point though 😂

I’m also utterly hopeless at throwing and catching (especially catching) and still do that embarrassing crocodile arm thing while shrieking and running away. Shameful really but I don’t care enough about catching a ball to try and improve.

A580Hojas · 28/10/2022 19:56

Good at remembering everyone's birthday.

Shite at tidying/housekeeping.

Gigihulu · 28/10/2022 19:56

Archery. No idea why as my eyesight is bloody awful and I have dyspraxia.

However, I'm absolutely crap at driving so don't do it.

Palmface · 28/10/2022 20:02

Thingsthatmakeyougohmmmmmmm · 28/10/2022 11:04

No sense of direction but I'm a math 'whizz' (a word that my old math teacher would say)

I realised, quite early on in life, that I can master things that are static/predictable (math, languages, law) but I'm useless with anything that is unpredictable (driving somewhere new, romantic relationships).

Thus, I now have a job that suits me to the ground, which I am good at, but I've been properly single for years - which suprises people. I guess I just cannot get my head around how romantic relationships work. And I remember thinking this when I was a child. So that's something I'm rubbish at.

This is me! Always been good at music, maths, languages, but rubbish at creative stuff and relationships. So interesting you've categorised it like this, makes so much sense.

I'm also the poached egg queen in our house. Can't decorate for shit.

Somanycuddlybears · 28/10/2022 20:07

I can pick out the melody of any song on the piano. Given a little time I can add in chords.

i cannot sing a single note in tune.

I can reverse park and reverse parallel park into any space.

I cannot drive into any space.

smalbert · 28/10/2022 20:10
