Things you're inexplicably good or bad at!

I was poaching some eggs the other day, and it always something I've found really easy. I hear people talking about how difficult it is to poach eggs but I dont get it - heat up the water, swirl it, drop the eggs in and a few minutes later hike them out again. First time I asusmed it was beginers luck, but I always seem to nail it. Also folding fitted sheets. Just get your fingers in the corners and fold the bloody thing - I don't see why people say it's hard.

but this isn't purley bragging - because I can't crack an egg properly to save my life! I had 2 eggs most mornings for years, so its not a lack of practice - but I very rarely get a nice clean break and no shell in the egg! I've tried all different techniques, on the side of the pan/bowl, on a flat surface, using a knife - none seem to work for me.

Got me wondering if other people have things that find easy that are supposed to be hard and visa versa

And before you ask, yes it is a slow day at work!

Good at: Packing, folding sheets, wrapping, organising finances and work schedules. Anything that involves paperwork and systems.
Rubbish at: can not make white sauce to save my life

pollykitty · 28/10/2022 13:04

I'm good at spatial design - like arranging furniture in a room in the most ideal way, packing the car and so on. I'm good at putting makeup on other people too, although hardly ever wear it.

kimchifix · 28/10/2022 13:05

I cannot remember people's names. I don't know who many famous people are. I don't know the names of actors or musicians. I don't know the names Of characters in the TV show I'm watching. I can't remember the name of a person I've just met most of the time. I can know many things about a person but their name is always the most elusive part. I'm not good at names. Men I'm particularly bad at.

louderthan · 28/10/2022 13:13

Non-existent sense of direction and no spatial awareness. Can't read a map. Cannot throw, catch or learn a dance. I am probably dyspraxic.

But I have a mind like a Filofax for names, dates, places, birthdays etc.

louderthan · 28/10/2022 13:14

I can make various complicated sauces, three course dinner no problem but I can't bake or cook rice without it going soggy!

Shortkiwi · 28/10/2022 13:36

I’m generally a good cook but also cannot poach eggs!
Also generally good at organising - booking holidays, remembering birthdays, cleaning, mental maths, recognising songs quickly, working out how gadgets work and how to repair, bargain hunting, spelling and grammar.

Bad - sense of direction, parking, singing, swimming, maintaining exercise, patience and tolerance, being generally motivated

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 28/10/2022 13:50

I've a really good sense of direction and I've never got lost. I also have a very accurate eye for shades/tones of colour. So I can always see even slight differences in tone or shade. Drives my DP nuts when redecorating.

I'm bad at maths, I just don't seem to be able to do mental arithmetic. I have to round everything up and then count backwards.

Bobshhh · 28/10/2022 13:53

I am excellent at interviewing, I've been offered every job I've applied for over the past 8 years.

I am good as estimating the length of a run so I always end up back at home at a whole number of Kms.

I am terrible at all sport.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 28/10/2022 14:02

Ariela · 28/10/2022 10:56

Ooh me too!
I also can colour match from memory the colour of an item without having the item to match with.
I can find my way around without a map. Somehow I have an internal compass and sense of place. I also know exactly how long it will take me to get from a to b. Yesterday I was travelling around 80 miles or so, and part way through the journey I got a call to ask how long till I would get there - I said I'd get there in 50 minutes, at 10 minutes to 2 and drew up outside exactly at that time.

Interesting! I’m really good at timing journeys and have a brilliant sense of direction too. It must all be held in the same part of the brain.

mistermagpie · 28/10/2022 14:07

I'm really really good at knowing whether a picture is level by eye. I check with the spirit level after and I'm always right. When DH was putting a name plate thing on our house I knew it didn't look right and kept hassling him - turns out the house wasn't level!

I'm also good at finding things on the internet. You want to find a dress from topshop from 8 years ago? I've got you.

I'm terrible with numbers though, I can barely do my child's maths homework. I can't do sudoku and have to use a calculator for everything. It's ironic because I'm a business analyst for a job and everyone just goes 'oh it's something to do with numbers', which it sort of is but I never have to work things out in my head!

luckylavender · 28/10/2022 14:09

I am appalling at spatial awareness and directions.

Unless someone is very tall or very short, everyone looks the same height to me. I have no idea what would fit me. And I can never find my way anywhere. Even if I go to the loo in a restaurant you can guarantee I won't find my table on the way back. I'm also no good with a Sat Nav.

thecatsthecats · 28/10/2022 14:13

My first couple of attempts at ANY sport. I'm always a natural.

I then quickly revert to crap or at best normal levels. Drove my school PE teachers mad!

OrangePomander · 28/10/2022 14:14

I’ve got excellent spatial awareness, can park a large vehicle in the most tiny or awkward spaces and reverse easily down winding lanes and around obstacles. I can also estimate measurements very accurately and am good with tech kit.

But despite being a confident cook I’m hopeless at stir-frying and roast potatoes. Also I'm the only person in my extended family who isn’t talented at drawing and painting.

TheIsaacs · 28/10/2022 14:15

Cooking rice. It sticks to the pan every time. I’ve tried all the different methods and it never changes. I don’t know where I’m going wrong.

OldTinHat · 28/10/2022 14:15

I have an inbuilt compass and know where N, S, E & W are all the time. I also have a very good sense of direction, I can always find myself there and back without a satnav, even with some hours driving to somewhere I've never been before.

I can also see if things are level. I've had people argue and produce a spirit level and I've always been spot on.

I know the time to the minute without checking a clock for hours.

I'm rubbish at cracking eggs, concentrating, lack patience, can't crochet (but can knit), hate the phone, crap at housework, never iron and don't answer the front door. I also can't make a roast chicken last three days just for me, never mind feed a family of four for a week...😆

McConkeysPlate · 28/10/2022 14:16

I am pretty shit hot at reverse parking, but can’t use a tin opener for my life.

Roundaboot · 28/10/2022 14:16

Tukmgru · 28/10/2022 09:35

Guessing the time without a clock, phone etc nearby. No sense of direction, can’t remember why I am where I am half the time, but ask me what time it is and I’m suddenly useful.

Me too! Absolutely no sense of direction at all but I always know what time it is.

I'm also rubbish at making most cakes, but weirdly good at puddings, even though it's basically the same thing!

SoupySoup · 28/10/2022 14:16

I am brilliant at catching. Throw me anything, at any speed and I'll catch it.
I'm crap at organising my stuff. My house is a tip.

WankBadger5000 · 28/10/2022 14:17

I am very good at putting together flat pack furniture, IKEA being my speciality.

I am bloody fucking awful at picking a decent man.

OrangePomander · 28/10/2022 14:18

@McConkeysPlate

I can’t fathom tin openers either, obviously goes with the good reverse-parking gene!

Vampirethriller · 28/10/2022 14:18

I can guess the time within a minute or two either way, and guess how much credit is on the electric or gas meter within a couple of pence.

I am very, very bad at shoelaces, buckles and zips. I have been known to cry over zips. My friends automatically check my shoes when we meet to see if they need fastening.

MintJulia · 28/10/2022 14:22

Timing food. I can cook single things perfectly satisfactorily but ask me to cook a meal with six or seven ingredients and I cock it up, no matter how much I plan.

And it makes me dislike cooking.😕

So mostly we eat one pot meals. Saves a lot of stress.

McConkeysPlate · 28/10/2022 14:23

@OrangePomander i use an electric opener. My daughters can’t use a manual one either

Fladdermus · 28/10/2022 14:25

Breadmaking. Anything 'bready' so crumpets, Belgian buns, bread. I just can't do it. It always comes out completely shit and inedible. Anything cakey and I'm a master. But bread hates me. No idea why. I bought a bread making machine and even that comes out horrible.

onwardandupwards · 28/10/2022 14:27

Im great at organising things and cleaning and I make a great cup of tea, but I cannot cook a decent steak or chicken breast without burning it and drying it out to the point my dog wouldn't even eat it!
