Why do people on mumsnet hate toilet brushes? 🚽

Chloefairydust · 27/10/2022 02:32

So it has come to my attention that toilet brushes are unpopular among mumsnetters … I own toilet brushes, and always have done. I don’t know how you would clean a toilet without one, I see it as a necessary thing in the house.

Can anyone explain why they are hated so much?? And how else I should be cleaning my toilet? 🤔

Dirty things that are hard to clean apparently

Although there have been threads where people say they put them in the dish washer

Chloefairydust · 27/10/2022 02:38

I just leave mine sitting in bleach, don’t really see an issue with it lol certainly wouldn’t put it in the dishwasher 🤢

I inherited mine by previous owner 12 years ago. Nobody has died YET.

I have no idea OP, there’s nothing more nerve racking than using a toilet with no brush! I have a silicone one and it’s a game changer.

Justworkplease · 27/10/2022 04:49

🤣🤣 I know a lot of hinges are hated on MN but...toilet brushes?! 🤯 I’ve obviously missed that one 😅

How do MNetters clean their toilets?! I second @Jeanstable - we’re a silicone brush house and they’re a game changer 🤣

MidnightConstellation · 27/10/2022 04:57

I’ve never had one. I think they’re disgusting.

But how do you clean your toilet without one??😮

Do you put your hand in the toilet bowl and scrub it with a cloth? 🤢

lol maybe you need to loosen the purse strings a bit, I’m sure a new toilet brush won’t break the bank 😂

I've had many toilet brushes . 5 people in this house and at £1.00 for a toilet brush what's not to love
You wouldn't get me scrubbing the shit off and under the rim with a cloth !
Mine sits in bleach

OMG yes to this, I would be very wary pooping in someone’s toilet if they didn’t have a toilet brush… Imagine the shame of having to leave a dirty toilet, if you were at a friends or relatives house 🫣

Not this again.
🙄

They are fucking rank and the worst comment on this site that I ever read about them is that someone wrote that they washed their toilet brush in the dishwasher 🤢🤢🤢

Chloefairydust · 27/10/2022 08:55

Surely nobody washes their toilet brush in the dishwasher… I mean they are so cheap you would just buy a new one if it got that bad! 😮

And I don’t understand how your supposed to clean a toilet without a toilet brush?? I think it’s a really basic essential thing to have, everyone should have one… I don’t think I have visited a house without a toilet brush to be honest 🤔

What if someone does one that doesn’t flush that needs breaking up with the toilet brush… (😳not speaking from personal experience but I grew up in a household with brothers who apparently had this problem 🤢) …

And if someone is visiting your house it’s nice to have a brush and some bleach next to the toilet in case they need to clean it after they have used it surely?

How do you clean a toilet properly without one? I replace ours regularly and yes now the kids are older and I don’t have to worry about them doing something idiotic the brushes sit in bleach.

MidnightConstellation · 27/10/2022 09:05

I use domestos down the toilet . It’s very effective. Squirt around the bowl and leave for half an hour.

If it won't go away, you use a poo knife, of course 😂🤮

JauntyJinty · 27/10/2022 09:21

Argh I hate toilet brushes, they're all scratchy - good old paper is much nicer!

Snugglemonkey · 27/10/2022 09:22

I have one in every toilet, sitting in bleach. I have spares and bin them if they look manky. I don't understand how people keep toilets clean without them, especially with young children. How are they cleaning under the rim?

eatsleepwinerepeat · 27/10/2022 09:23

What's the answer, please? What do MN use instead of a toilet brush?

I have the silicon thing. Have to. My 8 year old doesn't seem to be able to not miss the sides.

Devonchills · 27/10/2022 09:25

The reason I could never have one...

Poo flecks

I think the only logical answer could be cleaning out the bowl with their hand and a cloth.

I really don’t see how this is less gross than a toilet brush. If anything the toilet brush gives you more distance to the grossness and makes the job of cleaning the toilet a bit more pleasant. I imagine this is why toilet brushes were invented…

And I have a feeling I’m going to regret this but what on earth is a poo knife??? @CourtneeLuv

I would simply take a little scrunch of paper and rub any poo off whilst flushing if there was no brush. Then thoroughly wash hands. They are quite minging really and all this bleach soaking would make me nervous of flicking it on the floor or my trousers as I lifted it out.

PremsDhaba · 27/10/2022 09:29

Not sure how all these magically amazing, sanctimonious MNetters, who think loo brushes are disgusting, are cleaning their loos to be honest. Unless they're not and they're just covered in skid marks.

I wash it out in the shower. Then 😱 I clean my shower out (not with the brush). It's just poo, it washes off! Dishwasher thing is grim though.

I've never lived anywhere without toilet brushes. They even have them at my work.
