What time does your DC’s school finish?

Brieeeeeeeee · 26/10/2022 10:47

Both primary and secondary school finished at 3.45pm for me, in the late 90s/mid 00s.

I live in a different place to where I grew up and I see both primary and secondary children walking or being collected from about 2.50pm, which seems really early. Yesterday I was wfh but had an appointment to attend at 3.30pm, a short bus ride away - I left 30 mins beforehand but was almost late, as it took me that long to travel less than 2 miles because of the traffic and the amount of schoolchildren at each bus stop.

My own DC will be at school in the next few years and I’m vaguely sketching out how I’ll manage after-school care.

Just curious as to what the “general” school hours are, as I had assumed that 9am-3.45pm was standard.

8.55-2.55 and for the older one 8.50-3.15
we used wraparound care

Caspianberg · 26/10/2022 12:37

Not uk, but 7.30-11.45am here. Nightmare if you both work

alrightfella · 26/10/2022 12:39

Independent schools but their primary was 8.40 - 3.30, secondary is 8.30 - 4

My dc's ends at 3:15. I think growing up the school day technically ended at 3pm for primary and secondary was 3:25, but often had afterschool activities/sports most days in secondary, so was more like 5-6pm that I actually went home.

Shergill15 · 26/10/2022 12:42

DD's primary starts 8.45 and finishes 3.20. The secondary starts about the same time but finishes 4pm Monday - Thursday and 2pm Friday

mogtheexcellent · 26/10/2022 12:42

8.45 doors open, close at 9am
3.30 finish, home by 4pm due to parking chaos

Its annoying as her infant school was 3.10 finish and less chaos with parking and that gave us more time to do stuff after school on my day off.

4 days a week she has breakfast club from 7.30am and after school club till 5.30pm (although its open till 6.30pm)

mogtheexcellent · 26/10/2022 12:44

I remember my secondary had a squeezed day so we started at 8.45am (doors open from 8.30am) and we finished at 3pm with only half hour for lunch. This was the late 80s and it was so unusual we were on Blue Peter or Newsround or something.

GelatoQueen · 26/10/2022 12:45

8.45-3.10 primary

bigfamilygrowingupfast · 26/10/2022 12:45

When I was at school it was 8.45 - 3.45. Now my daughter's primary school has staggered finishing times, so 3pm for little ones, 3.15 for juniors, 3.25 for seniors. The high school finishes at 3pm with the idea that older siblings can then walk and pick up their younger siblings from school which is nice

sanityisamyth · 26/10/2022 12:46

Primary 9-3, although gates open 8.45am. There is a good breakfast and after school club though, which helps.

Dragonred · 26/10/2022 12:46

8.55- 3pm primary

shieldmaiden7 · 26/10/2022 12:54

Primary - 8.30 to 3.15
Secondary - 8.30 to 2.45

Natsku · 26/10/2022 12:56

My primary was 9-3 and secondary was 9-3:45 at first school and the other one was 9-3:30, think all the schools in the area had similar times. Seems like there's more variety nowadays.

Now I live abroad and DD's primary school finishes anywhere from 12 to 3 depending on what day it is (I think upper school can finish up to 4 but not sure) and the start time varies too, some days 8, some 9, some 10. Probably a nightmare if you work and don't want your child being alone.

Octoblockisadick · 26/10/2022 12:58

8.40 - 3.20 here (primary). I think the local secondary school finishes at 2.50 though, and I'm not sure what time they start.

@Brieeeeeeeee my secondary finished earlier than primary because we didn't have that afternoon break. I'm quite surprised at schools that finish at 2.30pm though. How do they get all the hours in? Are the kids starting really early?

Yes our secondary is 0800-1430, far too early! Confused

TenoringBehind · 26/10/2022 13:04

8:30-4 secondary (private)

sheepdogdelight · 26/10/2022 13:04

Infants 9-3
Juniors 8.40-3.20
Secondary school 8.30-3
School sixth form 9.30-4

The infants and juniors both had longer breaks than the secondary school (which is the other factor that will influence finish time - the secondary school only has a 15 minute morning break and 30 minute lunch.

How on earth do teenagers get up that early. Its not natural for them. Mine have a school bus that means they need tocleave the house at 8 and that's enough of a struggle

BooksAndHooks · 26/10/2022 13:21

I used to finish at 3.15 in primary and 2.50 in secondary.

Mine start 8.25 and finish at 3.10 in secondary.

confusedlots · 26/10/2022 13:26

Both my children finish at 2pm! They don't stay until 3pm until they're in primary 4

AriettyHomily · 26/10/2022 13:28

I finished at 2 when I was a kid in the ME, loved it! 3 when back in England and my kids finish at 240 as the boys school and girls school are on staggered times, they start at 8 though.

merlotlover · 26/10/2022 13:30

High school 8:20 start to 2:50 🙄

kegofcoffee · 26/10/2022 13:42

My school in the 00s was 8.45am-3.45pm.

Same school is now 8.45am-3pm. So a 45 minute shorter day.

However they now only have one 15 minute break and a 30 minute lunch. We used to have two 15 minute breaks and an hour lunch. So number of hours in lesson hasn't changed.

I'd love to know how they get everyone served, sat down and fed in 30 minutes.

Giveronyoursausage · 26/10/2022 13:44

Both at secondary school 8.45 until 2.25 and 2.30

kegofcoffee · 26/10/2022 13:45

Another local secondary school is 8.30am-2.30pm. With two 15 minute breaks and 45 minutes for lunch. Which personally I think is insanely short
