What time does your DC’s school finish?

Both primary and secondary school finished at 3.45pm for me, in the late 90s/mid 00s.

I live in a different place to where I grew up and I see both primary and secondary children walking or being collected from about 2.50pm, which seems really early. Yesterday I was wfh but had an appointment to attend at 3.30pm, a short bus ride away - I left 30 mins beforehand but was almost late, as it took me that long to travel less than 2 miles because of the traffic and the amount of schoolchildren at each bus stop.

My own DC will be at school in the next few years and I’m vaguely sketching out how I’ll manage after-school care.

Just curious as to what the “general” school hours are, as I had assumed that 9am-3.45pm was standard.

Lunch and break times have been decreased in most schools due to a mixture of space, behaviour and costs of supervision. This has led to earlier finishes (don't know why they don't go for later starts instead).

Most primaries I've known finish at 3:15. One was 3:05.

Secondaries usually before 3, as their break times are really short.

My DS was 8.55 to 3.30 in primary and is now 8.35 to 3.05 in secondary, and his primary has subsequently shortened its days to finish at 3. It does feel really early - I remember coming out of school at 4.10 in primary and 4.30 in secondary (back in the 80s).

State was 08:00 - 14:30
Public was 08:00 - 10pm but included sport/meal breaks and activities.

8.50-3.10 primary
8.30-3 secondary

My dc primary is 8.50-3.30

there’s another primary on the same road that is 8.30-3.00. I’m guessing the times are purposefully staggered

DD4 finishes at 3:00, the school DD2 will go to finishes at 3:30

Primary is 0850-1515. Secondary is 0830-1450. My secondary aged dc get the bus in and out because we are rural so they leave before I do in the morning - which ensures they get to school as the bus also picks up before I leave. They get back about 1520. Which is around the same time as the younger two get home. As my younger 2 are in year 6, they can walk themselves home. I no longer have after school care because they get in and get on with their chores and homework. Secondary school generally is accepted that students get themselves to and from so can be left home alone for an hour or 2 before parents get back from work.

9am - 2.30pm
Far too early a finish.

It seems like the times have always been varied. I was at high school in the 80s and it was 9-3:50. I had a long commute, train with long walk either end, so I was out 7:45 until 5, which did feel like a long day, even as a teen.

4.30, private. Clubs on until 6.30

8.50 till 3 or 3.15pm, depending on age.

If they all leave at this time, why does it matter what time others finish at then? 😂

8:25 - 3:20 for the lower school. Middle school is 8:00 - 4:00 and 8:00 - 4:00 on Saturday

DD, primary: 8.55 - 3.20, 12.30 on a Friday
DS1 & 2, secondary: 8.40 - 3.15, 1pm on a Friday

Eastern Scotland

Junior school - 8.45 - 3.20
Secondary - 8.30 - 3.15
SEN secondary I don't actually know & I just checked the website which doesn't say either but DS is picked up at 8am and dropped back off at 3.40 except Fridays which it's 2pm.

They've just tightened up the rules on this I believe, our precious primary school has had to extend its working day from September, it finished at 3 originally but now finishes at 3.15 I believe.

Secondary is 3.30 4 times a week and 4.30 one day (for an elective).

DS’s class :- 3.10
DD’s class :- 3.15

Secondary - 8:35 to 15:20

Every other Wednesday they finish at 14:15.

Lots of secondaries finish around 310-330, but then do intervention for another hour.

Many schools have also cut lunches, so kids still get the 5 hours of lessons, but less free time during the day.

Both mine and DC's school are 8:30-3:10.

Primary was 8.45 until 3.30
Secondary is 8.40 until 3.15.

@SheWoreYellow curiosity, that’s all. I live in a completely different region of the UK, in a city with loads of schools, and grew up with a village primary and small town secondary.
Interested in knowing whether an observed change in finishing time is due to regional difference, city v rural, or just something that’s changed in the 15-odd years since I left school!

9 - 3 primary school

08.40 to 15.45 high school but 08.40 to 13.10 on a Friday.
