What happened to coloured loo roll?

Saw a mention of it on another thread and it got me thinking. Whatever happened to coloured loo roll?

Not that long ago you would go into the shops and could choose from an array of colours, my mum favoured the cream kind of colour. Now it seems to be scents and what not, coco butter, coconut. Aldi even have a s'mores one which I've decided to avoid.

When did the change over happen as I've only just noticed and why? Is it an environmental issue because surely the coconut etc is just as bad?

I wouldn't buy coloured toilet roll now due to the known environmental impact of the dye in it. I'm glad they were largely dropped and I don't think they should be allowed to creep back in.

I think I also once read somewhere that coloured toilet paper had to be fished out of the system at sewage treatment plants because it didn't break down as well and the dye in it couldn't otherwise be eliminated from the system. I could be wrong on that, but I do think I read it.

I never knew about the dyes. I thought it had just gone out of fashion with the coloured bathrooms.

You look at some houses on Rightmove and they could easily be taken by a black and white camera.

Not great for the fanny

My mum would never buy coloured loo roll in the 1970s because she said it didn’t break down as well as white. No idea if it was true.

I always buy coloured or patterned if I see it, but never ever scented. The scents are so awful. I accidentally bought a "winter fresh" one when pregnant with DS3 and I couldn't go near the bathroom as it was so strong I wanted to vom! (Pregnancy can be blamed here).

I generally like artificial scents/perfumes too so for me to hate it it must be bad. It was like some god awful cheap stale aftershave scent.

Bad for the environment, bad for your fanny and bad for the plumbing. It's just bad all around and really no need for it at all. I always found it a bit tacky really. Quite retro. I'm glad it's gone

My mother (& grandmothers!) always insisted on white & unscented loo roll.

I did use Aloe Vera loo roll during the prep for a colonoscopy. Not sure if it made any actual difference but I felt comforted that I was doing the best I could for my rear...

I like the s’mores one, and the Asda watermelon one, the loo roll itself isn’t scented, it is just the cardboard!

Lots of pink loo roll in Auchan, Boulogne, yesterday.

Google says it was synthetic dyes used that were bad for us and the environment. Maybe I should start a naturally coloured loo roll business 😂
