What happened to coloured loo roll?

Saw a mention of it on another thread and it got me thinking. Whatever happened to coloured loo roll?

Not that long ago you would go into the shops and could choose from an array of colours, my mum favoured the cream kind of colour. Now it seems to be scents and what not, coco butter, coconut. Aldi even have a s'mores one which I've decided to avoid.

When did the change over happen as I've only just noticed and why? Is it an environmental issue because surely the coconut etc is just as bad?

Never thought about it but you are right.
I hate that scented stuff, it really irritates my skin.
Why do we need scented loo roll??

ClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 24/10/2022 01:07

I think it disappeared with the coloured bathroom suites. Our bathroom was blue when I was growing up so we had blue loo roll to match.

My grandma had a pink and black bathroom so had pink paper.

Etc etc.

DaisyChristina · 24/10/2022 01:11

Apparently doctors began warning people that the dyes in coloured toilet paper could be harmful to their skin. And there were environmental concerns about the dyes, too.

I remember all the coloured bathroom suites, my first flat had an avocado coloured one, very popular in its day! (I didn't choose it it was already installed, with carpet going up the side of the bath too!).

Notcontent · 24/10/2022 01:25

I think people’s taste has changed too.

InvincibleInvisibility · 24/10/2022 01:27

I have no idea why but I absolutely hate coloured loo roll. Had to tell my now DH when we moved in together that even if its on offer, I can't stand coloured paper.

I won't touch scented stuff either - far too sensitive to risk it. I can't even use bubble bath.

AnElegantChaos · 24/10/2022 01:30

@DaisyChristina That's interesting about the dyes, never knew that.

Can't have been as bad as the medicated loo roll my granny had - was like greaseproof paper and ripped your bum to shreds.

KloppsTeeth · 24/10/2022 01:37

The demise of coloured bathrooms and the dyes irritating skin. Several women I know; including myself, had recurrent cystitis through irritation from the dyes. As soon as we get worked out why, and switched to white, it stopped.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 24/10/2022 01:38

I only get white anyway as my bathroom is white but yea it does seemed to have been replaced with quilted (aka won’t flush down the loo) or thrush-aggravating scented toilet roll.

Izal toilet paper. Was medicated and originally government issue for hospitals and schools. Useless stuff 😅 Discontinued in 2010

2ManyPjs · 24/10/2022 01:46

@Pixiedust1234 Yes, that's the one! Used to be all the rage 😅

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 24/10/2022 01:50

The last time I saw coloured loo roll it was that first month of covid, and all that was left in the loo roll aisle was these 9 packs of peach loo roll. I remember thinking at the time had they pulled it off a very dusty pallette in the warehouse where it had remained lost until 2020. 🤣
Reader, we bought one. It harkened us back to simpler times when people had flowery net curtains under their sinks and weird dolls to hide the spare roll on the windowsill. And pot pourri, which I never quite learned how to pronounce.

VanillaImpulse · 24/10/2022 02:23

I also remember boxes of tissues that were all colours of the rainbow in one box. My mum always bought white and I always thought to myself I'll buy the rainbow ones when I grow up! Then they stopped selling them!

MegGriffinshat · 24/10/2022 03:40

My dad always bought green to match our 1980s new build, avocado bathroom.

Robostripes · 24/10/2022 06:12

My friends who live in France always have pink toilet roll, so it’s obviously still popular there!

Oh that's just brought back a memory, my late Aunt used to buy them to make flowers for her church group's annual Easter bonnet competition!

When I was about 8 my Mum had a hippy friend who was very into crystals and telling fortunes. She had the rainbow tissues. To me it absolute proof she was magic.

SoggyBananaLoaf · 24/10/2022 06:40

I lodged with my brother and SIL for a while in the late 80s, they had cream loo roll. I had thrush! Mum pointed out it was the loo roll, despite her avocado bathroom, she always insisted on white loo roll. She was a clever old thing, my mum .

NightmareSlashDelightful · 24/10/2022 06:43

I’m sorry but… s’mores scented loo roll? 😳

Londonnight · 24/10/2022 07:38

I used to work on checkouts and would have customers buy coloured toilet roll that matched their bathrooms. They wouldn't get any other colour if it didn't match.
I have no idea when coloured loo roll stopped being supplied.

bowchicawowwow · 24/10/2022 08:48

Asda toilet roll brand is called 'Shades' but alas there are no shades to choose from.

GetThatHelmetOn · 24/10/2022 08:51

This will be mentioned at some point as things we saw in the 20th century but do not see anymore…

I don’t remember seeing it at least for 20 years… but then I was shopping at Aldi so that may be the reason.

Quitelikeit · 24/10/2022 08:54

Maybe it was produced in Ukraine? Or maybe the bleaching chemicals are somewhere from the EU!!!

this is what I hear trotted out about everything else :-)

FinallyHere · 24/10/2022 08:56

1974, second year of secondary school, I did a project at school in 1974 with pictures showing the environment damage of the dyes in colour loo roll

Had hoped that the shelves would be cleared of colour loo roll them. Glad to see it only took some 25 years.

And didn't even know about the link to thrush

We had this at school in the 60s. It was always used as tracing paper. That's all it was good for, if you tried to use it for what it was intended you would just end up spreading it around. Awful stuff!

MrsBobBlackadder · 24/10/2022 09:15

I bought loo roll in Sainsburys last week and they had peach coloured available - I was very surprised to see it. Would love to buy green loo roll now 😄
