What happened to coloured loo roll?

Saw a mention of it on another thread and it got me thinking. Whatever happened to coloured loo roll?

Not that long ago you would go into the shops and could choose from an array of colours, my mum favoured the cream kind of colour. Now it seems to be scents and what not, coco butter, coconut. Aldi even have a s'mores one which I've decided to avoid.

When did the change over happen as I've only just noticed and why? Is it an environmental issue because surely the coconut etc is just as bad?

@DaisyChristina That's interesting about the dyes, never knew that.

Can't have been as bad as the medicated loo roll my granny had - was like greaseproof paper and ripped your bum to shreds.

Even back in the 80s the dye used in blue paper was considered by some to be particularly bad for those prone to thrush.

CableTidy · 24/10/2022 09:25

I saw something about ikea doing various colours

You'll be pleased to know that in the last 1990s I was part of the engineering team that redeveloped Newton Chambers' works in Sheffield where it was made. DH's company moved in to their original Victorian offices for a few years, and the rest is now housing a few businesses. The Newton Chambers ironstone and chemical works and the nearby mines were a huge part of the industrial history of the city.

I worked in Sainsbury’s as a teen in the 1989s. I remember stocking the loo roll aisle and putting out both Izal and Bronco bands of crispy loo paper. It was only ever bought by pensioners. It can’t have been the cost, as soft loo roll was cheaper.

MulberryMoon · 24/10/2022 09:41

I buy Christmas patterned loo roll from Marks for Christmas but white the rest of the year. I like to have a festive bum at Christmas

starfishmummy · 24/10/2022 09:43

I remember numerous women's magazines telling us that the hard, Izal, type was more hygienic than tissue. (I can only assume they got paid by the makers).
This was based on the premise that germs could pass through soft tissue, but couldn't pass through the hard type.

Obviously this made no mention of how difficult it was to get clean with the hard sort!!

evilharpy · 24/10/2022 09:47

I was in Lidl the other day and they had blue toilet paper. It was some sort of limited edition themed thing and was possibly scented, but it just reminded me of blue roll from industrial kitchens and looked like it would tear your arse to shreds.

Trisolaris · 24/10/2022 09:49

Haha, I always bought pink when living in house shares at uni so it was clear I’d bought it when people started with their ‘No one ever buys loo roll’, ‘I bought it last time’ etc I didn’t need to get involved as everyone knew I had bought some recently!

Oh that's just brought back a memory, my late Aunt used to buy them to make flowers for her church group's annual Easter bonnet competition!

My mum covered a hat in 'flowers' for me to wear at an Easter bonnet competition.

I'm glad it's had its day. I still remember the utter anxiety of wiping and checking the paper for whether the pink spotting in my pregnancy had stopped in my then MILs bathroom. Her loo paper was this quilted salmon pink stuff. How can you check for pink spotting on pink paper?!

The last time I saw coloured loo roll it was that first month of covid, and all that was left in the loo roll aisle was these 9 packs of peach loo roll. I remember thinking at the time had they pulled it off a very dusty pallette in the warehouse where it had remained lost until 2020. 🤣
Reader, we bought one. It harkened us back to simpler times when people had flowery net curtains under their sinks and weird dolls to hide the spare roll on the windowsill. And pot pourri, which I never quite learned how to pronounce.

Oh I like this!

SageRosemary · 24/10/2022 10:41

Was in M & S the other day with teen DD when she spotted the Christmas toilet paper. I will have to sneak back on my own some day to get some for her Christmas stocking! Think they had a pastel floral also.

I remember the "greaseproof" paper toilet paper too, not pleasant, but my Dad used to want it. DH remembers it from his Civil Service days, the department name was imprinted on EVERY sheet!

I also remember the paper roses, think people used to spray them with perfume too 😫, big dust collectors!

White, unscented, here every time, except this Christmas 🎄of course!

hesbeingabitofadick · 24/10/2022 10:48

How about this it's "natural" coloured.

I’m sorry but… s’mores scented loo roll? 😳

My thought exactly 🤣 Asda are apparently doing a strawberry and watermelon at the moment too

When I was a child in the 90s I used to go with my mum when she did the weekly shop and used to be allowed to choose the shade of toilet paper!

My nan also had the Izal toilet paper.

I also remember boxes of tissues that were all colours of the rainbow in one box. My mum always bought white and I always thought to myself I'll buy the rainbow ones when I grow up! Then they stopped selling them!

We still get these! They are called Rainbow as opposed to the all white/single colour box.

The ones I have on the go right now are lilac and white. One lilac out, next one is white. I have a box of pink as well.

Some of our loo roll have different colours, not the whole roll but the picture embossed on it. So we can still match our bathrooms ☺️

I just buy white though, because thrush magnet.

PinkButtercups · 24/10/2022 11:16

They still sell coloured toilet roll in Sainsbury's. I hate it 🤣.

isthismylifenow · 24/10/2022 11:17

But scented! Nooo

isthismylifenow · 24/10/2022 11:18

Oops posted too soon.

Scented loo roll is in the same category as scented pads imo.

HoppingPavlova · 24/10/2022 11:21

I remember the 80’s and the craze of coloured bathrooms. I remember my parents were really proud of the peach coloured toilet they purchased, to match the peach paint etc. They would proactively show guests the toilet who would marvel at the colour 🤣. Needless to say mum purchased peach coloured toilet paper. There was zero contrast in that toilet room. The bathroom itself was not much better, maybe also predominantly peach but I can’t commit to that as I have tried to block it out really.

It was all a step up though as I recall them replacing the lurid orange and lime formica kitchen with a wooden one in the 80’s - and they put in a ……. peach coloured push button wall phone which they also proudly showed visitors.

Many years ago, DH was a statistician working for a sensory testing company- they mostly did food, but sometimes other stuff you could feel, and one of those projects was toilet paper.

At the end of the project, DH brought home the unused rolls, so we got to try them all- we didn't have to buy any loo paper for months. My favourite one was one that was textured with a pattern like miniature brickwork, but because the data DH handled only had codes, not brand names, we never found out which it was. I used to look out for a loo paper with that pattern but never found it, so I assume that the company decided a pattern of bricks wasn't the best choice for something they want to promote as soft and gentle 😁

I did enjoy that project, but my favourite was the steak one- we had steak from a different country every Friday for a couple of months!

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 24/10/2022 11:46

I’ve just had another memory, Christmas 2001, we had what I think was Harry Potter toilet roll but it might have been kitchen roll. Anyone remember this?
