What do you think of a like button for comments on mumsnet?

Sometimes when I'm reading reviews on NYT cooking or all recipes, its helpful to be able to read the most liked/helpful comments. ّI find the same is useful on instagram and twitter. I don't know how useful it is on Facebook (I assume they're the ones who invented the 'like' button) as I don't use it.

It would also save reading a whole thread, when you can just read the most liked comments and get the gist of something. Although that could defeat the purpose of a thread that would foster discussion.

What do you think?

I think it would be useful and avoid redundant comments. Also a dislike button.

No. It would only be another personal opinion on top of what is already a personal opinion. MN works best when it goes off piste comes up with all the angles. It’s annoying when posters shut down conversation with “ everyone else thinks this so you’re wrong” comments.

You know the advice is good when no one says anything but LTB though.

Such buttons are unhelpful as you don't know why a person thinks as they do. Part of MN's attraction for me is that discussions happen, people explain themselves. It promotes clearer thinking, more reasoned debate.

I dislike and have never used the vote button as quite often it's about a poorly-expressed proposition, rendering the vote meaningless.

AuntieStella · 24/10/2022 09:36

I think it's brilliant that MN does not have one, so people actually respond and converse

EarringsandLipstick · 24/10/2022 09:38

Totally against it.

It's just too easy, removes the need to you know, use words, and without a shadow of a doubt will bring out the worst in MN

AutumnCrow · 24/10/2022 09:43

@AllAboutMargot The vibe?

I like what the posters said about not having or needing a like button.

It is wrong for MN.

No thanks. Thumbs down for that oneGrin

It’s a forum not a popularity competition. And no to an edit function too, I think it makes people much more likely to think about what they’re posting.
