Has anyone seen this at the Barbican yet? I’m taking my seven year old daughter in January as a birthday treat and I’m really excited about it.

I was meant to go with my daughter but I was ill so she went with her dad instead.
Apparently I missed the greatest theatre show EVER IN THE HISTORY OF EVER.
It was absolutely amazing apparently.
Seriously - every review I have read says it's fantastic. Gutted I missed it 😭
I hope you enjoy.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 21/10/2022 17:03

Watching as am wondering whether to book tickets!

AintNoThang · 21/10/2022 17:15

I'd absolutely love to but then nearly vomited at the ticket price!

The only thing I've ever paid that much before for is Book of Mormon.

It is utterly beautiful, mesmerising and brilliantly staged. I would recommend it to anyone.. Totoro is a delight, cat bus is magical.. I cried..

Needmorelego · 21/10/2022 17:19

@AintNoThang that's why I am so gutted - ticket prices have gone up since we got the original ones.

Needmorelego · 21/10/2022 17:20

@HelloDoris my daughter said she cried too.

NCtonotgetroasted · 21/10/2022 17:20

Oh wow this sounds amazing g

GCAcademic · 21/10/2022 17:21

It’s got rave reviews.

@HelloDoris my daughter said she cried too.

I'm very lucky that a family member is part of the production team so saw it before the general public.. I would love to see it again, but tickets are scarce! It's possible it will transfer to the West End and tour.. I really hope so!!! I would pay to meet Totoro..

mrsfeatherbottom · 21/10/2022 17:29

I hope they do a tour! My autistic DD loves the film but no way we could afford to go to London before it ends.

Needmorelego · 21/10/2022 17:31

@mrsfeatherbottom as it's the Royal Shakespeare Company I am hoping it might move to Stratford upon Avon which is near where my parents live and I could see it that way.
My fingers are crossed.....

ConfessionsInTheMoonlight · 21/10/2022 17:39

Oh wow, I didn’t realise the prices had gone up. I consider myself very lucky then because I’m struggling at the moment but ordered the tickets months ago as soon as they were advertised. It was a frivolous decision in a moment of madness.

My daughter hasn’t been to a theatre before but we both love Totoro and I will definitely cry 😅

Im so glad those of you who have seen it have had a magical time.

We’ve booked for between Christmas and New year - so excited can’t wait to see it.

HelloDoris · 21/10/2022 17:45

Word of warning the Merch is very very expensive.. so take cash or be prepared to deflect small people away from the kiosks!!!

starlingsintheslipstream · 21/10/2022 17:48

Saw it yesterday - it was magical, really joyful. But yes the merchandise is ££££ 😲.

Pipsqueakpopsqueak · 21/10/2022 19:57

Seeing it in January for my Totoro mad 5yr old’s Christmas present! Can’t wait!

EmmatheStageRat · 23/10/2022 18:00

I’m taking teen DD next Saturday, to the matinee performance. We have tickets for row D in the Stalls. I booked the nanosecond I got the email from The Barbican about the production. DD is registered blind so we are able to access a touch tour before the performance, generally this is where severely sight impaired children and adults get to touch the costumes and props for a lovely sensory experience. We can’t wait!

If anyone else from MN is there next Saturday matinee, please give us a wave. DD will be wearing her Japanese cat bus hat!

Can anyone give me an indication of what type of merchandise is available?

starlingsintheslipstream · 23/10/2022 18:20

Ds got a t shirt and a Totoro plush. There were definitely umbrellas. Couldn't tell you what else was though tbh as was reeling at the £70 price tag on the plush (only purchased because ds paid for it himself!).

WolverineBlueyy · 23/10/2022 18:26

Too expensive for us to make the trip and I don't often get FOMO these days but I'm so sad! Already asked them if there might be a cinema screening like the National does (no), all we can hope is it eventually tours. I think it has enough interest nationally and internationally to have a life beyond this run. Everything crossed!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/10/2022 18:40

Friends went a few days ago. Loved it. They are Ghibli Geeks though!

KingscoteStaff · 23/10/2022 19:11

Have tickets for Christmas week! Whole family beside themselves with excitement!

Maybepossibly22 · 23/10/2022 19:20

Ooh I’m going in January too! I can’t wait, I have a totoro tattoo so I’m quite likely to cry (I cry at the theatre generally anyway). Should be fantastic

Agreed, I was really hoping that there would be a live cinema screening so that DD2 could also get to enjoy a performance but at a less astronomical cost, and with less stress. DD2 is six and has ADHD; there is no way I would inflict her presence on a theatre audience of people who have paid £££ for their tickets!

Teen DD1 and I love live cinema screenings; we’re watching The Seagull from the National Theatre the week after next.

Thanks for the feedback on the merchandise; there is no way I will be paying £70 for a Totoro plush! I’m going to search on Amazon etc, buy a few affordable bits and present them to DD before we hit the Barbican shop.

GCAcademic · 23/10/2022 23:09

The RSC is not in a good situation financially and could desperately do with another Matilda-level hit. I’d be amazed if there isn’t a long West End run.

tinkerbellvspredator · 23/10/2022 23:14

I'm taking 8 year old DC on Thursday. Wasn't too expensive as I booked when it first became available. Very excited now hearing the above. Was a bit worried it's a late night /long show and whether DC will stay engaged but if it's really good we should be fine. I'll report back.
