Where's nice for lunch in Edinburgh that will suit the whole family?

Just that really - husband and I love good food, children are not especially fussy but would want something more than chicken nuggets and chips, then we've got the parents who have various requirements and preferences and are likely to freak out completely if the place is too fancy/expensive (even though I will be paying).
Basically somewhere that can provide plain enough food (and preferably in small portions) to keep the oldies happy without those of us who enjoy our food feeling like we're in a motorway service station.
Staying central/New Town but can travel, all suggestions welcome!

We love this place, linking to it and they have a sample menu so you could see whether this might work www.valvonacrolla.co.uk/caffes

I like cosmos or the Conan Doyle for our lot when we’re down there. But in the same bit as cosmos you’ve got a filling station too and that’s always a shout

Makar’s mash bar is fab, especially for this time of year when it’s chilly outside. Proper comfort food.

We had a big family lunch at Vittoria on the Bridge and the staff were wonderful and really went out of their way to accommodate six adults and six children with many many food issues! We had a brilliant time.

The Whisky Bar on the Royal mile or The Albannach. Avoid Deacon Brodies on the Royal Mile, gimmicky and the food wasn’t great.

My ex loved that place.

The Palmerston is very nice but not overly fancy, and does a lovely set lunch menu. Or maybe the Scran and Scallie (which is a bit pricy for what it is, though).

Cote ? I know it's a chain but good food.

Amarone at the end of Queen St (or is it George St) opposite St Andrew’s Square is always our first choice for kids and grandparents. Lovely big brasserie vibe, pizzas, pastas, steaks, salads. We’ve been half a dozen times and it’s never missed. Recommend booking though.

wow the sample menu at the Palmerston looks delicious!
All great suggestions thank you!

Vittoria's on the North bridge.

The Palmerston is one of the best places in town. Vittoria's wouldn't be my choice for amazing food but they definitely do big parties very well. Dishoom is great because they do smaller plates, as do Mother Indias if you like Indian food. If you like pizza there are some great places - Civerinos on Hunter Square does pasta and great pizza, the kids will love it. Angels with Bagpipes is Scottish without being ersatz. Urban Angel is also great for brunch/lunch.
